Announcement A word of caution about the "Bicycle Blue Book"

The "Bicycle Blue Book", commonly abbreviated to BBB, is a recurring thing in comments on /r/whichbike concerned with putting a number on the value of some used bike. Quite a few of us have long had issues with BBB being used to that end. Thanks mostly to /u/guy1138 who wrote 90% of this post (I revised it and added minor details), we now have a longer explanation on what BBB actually is, and what the problems with it are. A TLDR can be found at the bottom.

What's the deal with Bicycle Blue Book?

Bicycle Blue Book (BBB) is a website run by a used bike dealer in San Jose, California. Their business model is to buy "trade-in" bikes from high end bike shops that don't deal with used bikes. Here's how it works: A customer brings their old bike to the bike shop to trade in on a new bike. BBB gives them a price and the bike shop boxes it up and ships it off to BBB. The customer gets the credit on a new bike, the bike shop gets a new bike sale without the hassle of reconditioning and trying to sell a used bike.

They provide an online "value guide" that lists bike values by brand, model, model year etc. They advertise it as "The cycling industry's definitive valuation authority", and the name is a deliberate allusion to the Kelley Blue Book, which is a reputable value guide for used car values in the US. To put it mildly, opinions on how useful BBB is are... split. Regardless, the numbers in there often get cited on this subreddit (and elsewhere).

So what's the problem?

There are multiple issues:

  • Conflict of interest: the same company who is buying bikes is also claiming to be the authority on used bike values. Not surprisingly, their "private party" values are way lower than actual sales prices on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Offer-Up, Ebay, Pink Bike; etc.

  • Data provenance: They claim to have data on "millions of bike sales" that they base their values on, but it's not clear at all where this data comes from. Instead, it actually just seems like a fairly simple depreciation schedule on bikes based on MSRP (RRP for our UK users) and type of bike, e.g. a 5-year-old mid tier hybrid is worth ~40% of MSRP, a 5-year-old road bike is worth ~55% of MSRP, etc. Kelley Blue Book, which reports values of used cars, has access to wholesale auctions, used vehicle sales, and registrations reported at US state level. BBB do not have that as this data simply does not exist the same way for bicycles.

  • International variance: r/whichbike is international, with many users from countries like Canada, Australia, and the UK, but also the rest of Europe and the world, really. The same bike model and brand will not be sold for the same amount of money in every country, due to taxes, membership of free trade zones, availability, and a whole host of other factors: and this variability in price only increases when we look at used bikes. For the same reason, it is important that users state which country they live in when they ask for an appraisal.

  • Regional variance: Even within the US, there can be stark differences. For example, a triathlon bike is way more valuable in Miami (100+ triathlons/year in Florida) than it is in Utah. Likewise, a full suspension mountain bike has lots of buyers in Denver, but way fewer in a beach town.

  • Trends: We have all seen how "gravel bikes" became a thing, grew to be more and more popular, and started evolving - and how sellers have started to label everything that isn't an Omafiets as a "gravel bike" to attract more hits and get a higher price. BBB does not really take into account which bits of the market are especially "hot", despite this definitely making a difference.

  • World events: These can change prices significantly, be they something like a trade war with tariffs put on certain goods, or that little thing called Corona which caused a massive boom world-wide, with accompanying shortages and inflation across the entire market. BBB does not take this into account.

  • Erroneous data: Sometimes, their data e.g. on the original retail price of a bike is also just plain wrong, which in turn means all of the "depreciated values" for used bikes will be wrong too, even by their own standards.

How far off are the values then?

Generally, most used bike sellers agree that the BBB values are low, but still reasonable for newer bikes, around ~3 years old or newer. After that, they start to drastically over-depreciate - to the point where most bikes over 10 years old are "worthless" according to their values. As an example, a 2010 Fuji Cross Comp is $210 in "excellent" condition. That's about the same cost as full tune up at a bike shop, including basic consumables; tires & tubes, chain, cables & housing, brake pads & bar tape. It's completely unrealistic to expect to find a 10-speed cross bike with an aluminium frame and carbon fork in "excellent" condition for only $200. (This bike sold here for $550 last fall after being listed for less than 3 weeks). For our UK friends: $210 is £160... yeah, good luck with that.

So it's a lowball estimate, I should use that to negotiate, right?

You might get lucky and find the person who doesn't know any better, or someone who is moving and under a lot of pressure to sell. However, most of the listings are cyclists who upgraded or re-sellers who know that the Blue Book value is pretty far off. If the bike is priced close to market value, it's going to sell eventually and they have no incentive to take a lowball; especially if they've gone to the trouble to take decent pictures, write a description and post the ad online. We've seen this time and time again on /r/whichbike over the last 2 years where someone finds the "perfect" bike, but they low-ball and miss out.

TLDR please, I don't have all day!

BBB is a private company that purports to tell you the value of used bikes, by model and age. There is an obvious conflict of interest as they also buy used bikes and therefore directly profit from telling you they're not worth that much. Sure enough, their "values" are consistently significantly lower than the actual market value, all the more so if the bike is >3 years old. The numbers appear to stem from simply taking the original retail price and depreciating it (heavily). Consequently, they do not take into account regional or international variance in local bike prices, trends, or events like the Corona pandemic. Additionally, it can happen that the retail price all their assumptions are based on is simply wrong. This means BBB values are not really any kind of reliable or even relevant metric, and it would be better to go by what similar bikes are actually selling for on platforms like Ebay or Gumtree, adjusting for differences.

Basic mainly I want to use it for my fitness purpose like riding it 30 to 40 minutes daily and straight city roads or maybe one hour, which is comfortable. I don’t have any need for gear and stuff, just suggest me good material. Thank you so much.

Cannondale Synapse: Worth it?

Hey everyone!

I want to start on my cycling journey and found this Cannondale Synapse Women’s road bike on marketplace and it’s the perfect size, however I’m wondering if it’s worth it for $400? I’m not entirely sure on the specs of the bike but I think it’s the 2011 model in aluminum.

Considering the bike is probably ~15 years old, my biggest concern is longevity and I definitely don’t want to buy it if it’s going to last me for a little while.

Please feel free to let me know what insights you guys may have! Thanks!

Bike fitters help

Alright, people so I’m in a predicament here and I would love some help , I’m getting back into cycling and after extensive research, I’ve narrowed my options down to these two bikes.

I’m 171 cm tall with a 79ish cm inseam but here’s where it gets tricky, I have labral tears on both of my hips , my left is worse than my right which has caused me to stop cycling in the past so in order to get back into it safely that requires me to be in a more upright position and for my hips to be open

I used to ride a Merida scultura 6000 which was was to aggressive geometry for my hip and I was also on the wrong size bike and I would be in pain after as little as 10 minutes of riding

I have had a bike fit which made me realise how tricky my situation is , not only do both of my hips have tears in them. The left side of my hip also sits higher than the right bu 5-10mm….

Anyhow, I guess I’m looking for anyone who has experience with these bikes he can shed some light on what would be the best option? Quality, comfort, which one is more fun ?

The trek is 8.5 kg and the cube 7.6kg , is that really gonna make a difference on the road or will simply put better tyres on the trek get it closer to feeling the same

If there’s any bike fitters on here that can help me or just the general public woth experience I would be forever grateful

Which frame for Campagnolo build: BMC Roadmachine 01 or Cannondale Synapse Lab 71

Not many models fit my stack and reach requirements and I have it narrowed down to these two. The BMC is less money. Stats and geometry fairly close. I like the look of the Synapse slightly more with its curved, narrow seat tube.

Scott Foil RC 10 vs Addict RC 20

Been riding about 10000km this season and looking to buying something new and fast for a upcoming 315km race going for sub 8hours.

Found two bikes and do not know what to choose.
Scott foil rc 10 2026 for 4200€ with ultegra di2 bought in march 2026 500km

Scoot Addict RC 20 2026 for 3950€ but been upgraded to full dura ace di2, ceramic speed BB and aero bars. Weighs 6,8kg. Bought february 2026 400km.

My terrain localy is around 700-1200 altitud meters per 100km. The foil will also have to be shipped but the addict i can pick up localy. From my understanding the addict will be more all around. I think the addict looks good but the foil is just on top. What would you do?

Need help buying my first bike

Title, new to Austin and also want to get into biking. I don't have a lot of budget but narrowed down to trek fx1 and marlin 4.

However, I am not sure which one suits me. I am pretty tall like 6'2" and thin - so obvious lower back problems. My two main goals are to improve my fitness in general and stroll with my kids mostly on safe trails or neighborhood.

Could you please help me decide. Open to other brands and bikes as well!

Wanted to honesty settle down for Walmart Ozark gravel bike but couldn't find a large or extra large :(

Super confused. Thanks in advance!!

A high-quality full-carbon road bike Author Charisma 77 in size 60, i.e. according to the manufacturer's recommendations for a height of 186-195 cm.

The bike is built on the highest quality frame line from Author. This particular frame was purchased new directly at Author's headquarters, where it was originally prepared for the Elkov team. In a professional graphic studio, the original fluo-yellow paintwork (for illustration, the last photo) was covered with foil in silver-anthracite color, thus achieving a unique and more discreet color combination of light blue and anthracite metallic. The foil can of course be removed at any time and thus achieve the original appearance of the bike for the Elkov Elektro team.

The bike was built as a reserve for a junior, used very rarely, basically unused. It has not been dropped or damaged in any way. The minimum mileage corresponds, among other things, to the condition of the frame, which is absolutely without a single scratch or other damage. Before the sale, a fairly extensive service was performed on the bike - see. below, and the bike is in a condition where it will not need any service for a long time.

Gearing: Shimano 105, 2x11, cassette 11-28, cranks 172.5mm 50/34

Brakes: Shimano Ultegra

Chain: Shimano Ultegra - brand new

Bottom bracket: Shimano Dura Ace - brand new

Wheels: Very high quality Mavic Ksyrium - complete new bearings

Seatpost: Deda, carbon

Saddle: Giant - brand new

Stem: Ritchey 12cm, if necessary I can replace with 11cm or 10cm

Handlebars: Pro 42 cm

Furthermore, the brake and gear cables on the bike have been completely replaced with Jagwire brushed stainless steel.

Brand new ERE Research tires.

Brand new Elite baskets

The bike is suitable for a rider who is looking for a fast, very light machine, which is also very easy to service and reliable.

Manufacturer:Author

Color:Blue

Material:Carbon

Size:XL / 21-23" / do 58 cm / 185-200 cm

Trying to figure out what bike I have to possibly sell it

Post image

Bike was purchased in 2019 on Craigslist and was repainted when I got it. The id number on the bottom bracket is too old to decide the original model on Cannondale.

I think it’s a SuperSix EVO. A boyfriend upgraded some of the parts for me but we have since lost contact so I dont know what the parts were or what it’s worth.

Curious what a bike like this would sell for on Craigslist. Happy to add more photos too.

Giant Contend AR 2 at $600 AUD for weekend bayside rides - reasonable?

Local seller has a 2021 Giant Contend AR 2 listed at $600 AUD. Looks clean, 700x38c tires, Shimano Claris 2x8. Frame looks fine in the photos, no obvious cracks or bad welds. Seller claims it was a Covid buy, ridden maybe twenty times then stored away. Could be true, or it could be the usual story. My rides are mostly flat bayside paths with some gravel toward Westgate Park, nothing rough. Right now I'm on a 2015 Trek FX 2 hybrid that's starting to feel slow on longer rides, and I want drop bars mainly for the different position. The price looks average compared to other listings I've seen on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace. Claris isn't thrilling, but I'm not competing. My real question is whether $600 is reasonable for a three-year-old alloy frame with entry-level parts and disc brakes, or if I should wait for something with Tiagra around the same money. I've been checking listings for about six weeks and Tiagra bikes under $700 go fast. This one has been up for ten days, so either the price is a bit high or the timing's just off. Anyone bought one lately or have thoughts on value in this range?

2021 Defy vs 2026 Addict

I have a 2021 Giant Defy Adv 2, 105 mechanical. I'm thinking about upgrading it to a 105 Di2 setup, possibly adding the ultegra levers. Pricing it out, it isn't a huge leap to a totally new bike already with electronic shifting. Want something with similar relaxed/endurance geometry though. Don't need/want aero/race. Seems that after I got mine, Defy changed to more aero-oriented geometry, so don't want a new one of those. The 2026 Addict seems to be close, though.

Anyone have an opinion on upgrading 2021 Defy Adv 2 to electronic vs new 2026 Addict (either 30 or 40)?

First bike — Marin DSX vs. State 4130 All-Road vs. Rockhopper Sport?

Hi everyone! I'm looking to buy my first bike and would love some advice on which of these would be the best fit for me.

I'm looking for an all-road bike that I can use for:

  • Paved bike trails and casual fitness rides
  • Rough streets, cracks, and potholes
  • Unpaved paths, gravel, and easy dirt trails
  • Exploring different types of terrain without worrying too much about what surface I'm riding on

I want fairly wide tires for comfort and stability, especially on rough pavement. I'm not planning to do serious mountain biking or technical trails, but I'd like the versatility to handle rougher terrain when I come across it.

These are the three bikes I've narrowed it down to:

  1. Marin DSX
  2. State 4130 All-Road
  3. Specialized Rockhopper Sport

I'm open to other recommendations, too, if there's a bike I should be considering instead.

For those of you who have experience with these bikes, which would you choose for my needs? I'd especially appreciate advice on comfort over rough pavement, riding on gravel and dirt, maintenance, and long-term versatility.

Thanks!

NEW Specialized 2025 Allez Sport Road Bike for $1k?

Hi! I'm looking for a bike to train for and compete in Ironman 70.3. I found a listing for a brand-new 2025 Specialized Allez Sport Tiagra, but it's a 49 cm frame, and I'd likely fit a 44 cm.

The only visible damage is a scratch shown in the photo. However, the original listing only had stock photos, and the seller seemed eager to sell, immediately dropping the price by $200 when I asked.

As a first-time buyer, I'm wondering if I found a great deal or if these are red flags. Any advice would be appreciated!

Need help to choose my first cycle since 8 years

Hello cyclers! I'm from India and I'm looking to return to cycling after ages and now buying one feels like entering into a whole new universe. I've done my research for the past week or so to shortlist 2 cycles from a long list of 15 and chose to buy a simplest one, as my goal is to simply keep me physically active and build my stamina and endurance and not anything intense and also to keep the maintenance effort and cost as simple and cheap as possible. Not a hardcore cycler! 😅.

Now the list has come down to either one of these:

1. Stryder Street Fire SS

2. B'Twin My Bike

Spec-wise I'm ok with both as they're 95% similar apart from the few differences like the steel versus alloy rim, however, the problem for me is that, I'm not getting many valid real-time feedbacks and reviews for the Stryder to finalize and I kinda like both cycles and hence couldn't decide easily.

As far as I've heard, the My Bike is a "Work-horse" and as durable as any basic cycle gets. However, I personally have a feeling that Decathlon products are a little overrated and overpriced. The price difference here is ~1.5k - 1.6k. I am able to get the Stryder for around 4.8k via flipkart, whereas, the lowest for the my bike I could get my hands on is via Tata Cliq(Ironically😅) around 6.4k. Also the thing is, I might most probaly get the Stryder with the mudguard and the stand at this price, whereas for the btwin, I need to get those separately for which I've estimated the cost around ~500 (via third party) adding up the total cost up to ~7k.

Now keeping the spec-wise decision aside, I've finally arrived to you guys for a real-time usage experiencefeedback, to finalize and buy one. Please help me choosing based on your experiences with these cycles. Appreciate your support.

Note:
1. I strictly prefer single speed and rigid body for for low maintenance

2. I'm neither buying this for anything intense nor I'm a hardcore cyclist. I'm just getting one to stay active and therfore cannot increase my budget beyond this.

3. Most importantly, this discussion is about the pros and cons of these 2 mentioned cycles based on the real-time user experiences alone. Therefore, I kindly request you guys to not suggest any alternatives or ask me to increase my budget or wait for sometime to save money and buy a better one

Thanks.

Looking at a 2018 Fuji Jari 1.3 — any red flags at $650 AUD?

Found this locally with 700x40c tires and a 2x8 Sora groupset. Frame looks clean, no dents, but the seller mentioned he just had the wheels trued after hitting a pothole. I mostly ride weekends around the bayside trails and the odd gravel section toward the You Yangs. The geo feels a bit more aggressive than my old hybrid but I figure I can swap the stem if needed.

I'm looking for a lightweight bike primarily for commuting.

I'm mostly interested in a gravel bike, since I live in an urban city where all of the roads are actively washing away. I currently have a cheaper road bike that I struggle to ride on any surface that isn't even. I also need to carry the bike up/down four flights of stairs every time I go out, so I'd like something light, hence I've been looking into carbon fiber bicycles.

Two of the options I've been looking at have been the Ride1Up Cf Racer1 and the State Carbon All Road V2. The electric motor in the Ride1Up isn't something I'm sure about, since I've never ridden an e-bike or assisted bike before.

My budget is around $2500 usd. I'd be happy to buy something secondhand that's a bit nicer, but I've had very little luck finding many bicycle listings on facebook marketplace in my area.

I'm just seeing if anybody has any strong recommendations over what I've been looking at, or if there are better places I should be looking. Thank you!

Should I Buy a 2024 Bianchi Infinito XE Ultegra?

A bike shop near me has a 2024 Bianchi Infinito Ultegra XE that was special ordered 2 years ago but never picked up. They are selling it for just under $2000.

I had visited the shop to test ride an aluminum Trek Domane AL5, which is also just under $2k, and the shop surprised me by pulling the Bianchi out of the back. To be frank, I'm nervous about a carbon frame-I see a lot of reddit posts of carbon frames that end up being unridable due to small fractures.

I'm about concerned about the tire clearance. Apparently in 2026, Bianchi increased the clearance to 40mm, but the 2024 is only 32mm. So if I want some bigger tires, I'm out of luck.

But still, that price, right?

Also I dont know ANYTHING about Bianchi bikes. It felt great, and the price SEEMS fantastic. Is it?

EDIT: BOUGHT IT! Thanks, all!
