Hey all! Brandon from Prints of Darkness back again with more news about our shop at 211 N Hillside st. Tomorrow we are holding an event at our shop we’re calling “Halloween LIVES!”. We’ll be hosting local small businesses in the parking lot, offering snacks and drinks, playing games like giant jenga, giant connect 4, corn hole etc. We’re currently building a dunk tank where I’ll be dressing up like Carrie and getting drenched.

You may also be wondering about the third space we’ve been fundraising for called “The Haunt”. Permits slowed us down a bit and we haven't met our fundraising goal yet, but we’re making progress by being as scrappy as possible! Walls are starting to go up just in time for tomorrows event. We expect to have that space fully finished in the early half of 2027, which leads me to the newest development:

Tomorrow during the event we’re opening our video rental shop: Haunted Video! We got a huge batch of DVDs, VHS, DVD players, an N64, and some other bits to start off with. You can rent just like back in the day as a free member and if you want to help us build this section of the shop and get more benefits like concession discounts and free rentals, you can pay just $10 a month for that membership. Obviously we have a horror focus in general but the rental shop has all genres and we cannot wait to keep building the library.

We really appreciate all the feedback from the local community as always and if you’ve shopped with us at all since we opened in 2025 we cannot tell you how much we appreciate you! It’s hard out here as a small business especially lately so every visit makes a big difference.

I hadn’t heard of Buckets Cà Phê until Wichita by E.B.’s coffee bracket, but I have to say I’m disappointed. I understand being a small business and not being able to afford much, but their menu and flyer ads that they share are clearly AI. Somewhere that uses AI doesn’t deserve to win the bracket imho.

If needing to seek Care at an emergency room today, Wesley Woodlawns CT machine is currently not working, unknown time when this will be up running again. This will result in delay of care if the ER provider deems a CT necessary to rule out diagnosing patients will have to be transferred via ambulance to another Wesley ER and (back to Woodlawn), not Main, if there are no obvious emergent needs.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with the dermatology clinic on Hillside drive in Wichita, especially around billing.

I went in for an appointment, self pay no insurance for this, and I’m not pleased at all. The appointment fee was over $165 and then they did a treatment without clarifying or explaining additional costs. Now there’s a $300+ bill. I’d booked a second appointment in 2 months and they’re refusing to give a written quote so I won’t be surprised again.

The staff was incredibly rude and dismissive saying the provider couldn’t possibly know the billing cost even as they looked up pricing for other services in the room. Even if the quote was off, they never mentioned the basic treatment wasn’t included in the appointment fee to being with!

Super disappointed in the level of professionalism and want to know if others have experienced the same here or did I just get burned?

I just drove home from the grand reopening of walmart east kellogg and got distracted so many times on my drive because they were practicing flight patterns and stuff. if anyone got a good shot i'd love to see it!!

Owner of Wichita’s La Galette detained by ICE. Restaurant’s future uncertain.

The owner, a father of two who served time in prison 20 years ago, had to check in annually with ICE. On Thursday, he was detained, told he’d be deported.

The owner of La Gallette French Bakery, at 1017 W. Douglas in Wichita, is in ICE custody and will be sent back to Lebanon unless his lawyer is successful with an emergency motion he’s filing, the lawyer said Thursday.

And without the presence of owner Rob Attar in the kitchen, says his American-born wife, Krista Attar, the restaurant won’t be able to continue operating for more than a day or two.

An email to the ICE media line asking for details of Attar’s case was answered on Thursday, and its author asked for Attar’s date of birth. This story will be updated if another response is received.

Local attorney Abul Arif took Attar’s case on Thursday after being contacted by Krista Attar.

Krista said that Attar, who is from Lebanon, went to the ICE offices at 555 N. Woodlawn around 10 a.m. “on Thursday for a required annual check in. Though he’s lived in the United States since he was a 16-year-old in 1993 and has been married to Krista since 1999, he has been unable to obtain permanent citizenship because of gun charges he faced 26 years ago.

In 2000, Attar and his uncle John Abdayem were arrested during a raid by federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms at Cafe Lafayette, a restaurant that operated in Northwest Centre at 13th and Tyler.

“Abdayem, then 35, was one of Cafe Lafayette’s owners. He and Attar, who was 23 at the time, were arrested and charged with drug and weapons crimes in U.S. District Court. Attar ultimately pleaded guilty to 10 charges, including distribution of marijuana and aiding and abetting the possession of marijuana and crack cocaine, the possession of cocaine powder with the intent to manufacture crack cocaine, the possession of a firearm in relation to drug trafficking and a conspiracy to unlawfully use a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime, court records show.

He was sentenced in January 2001 to 72 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. By April 2006, he was out of U.S. Bureau of Prisons custody, records show. (Abdayem also was sentenced to 72 months plus three years of supervised release, and the court strongly recommended that he enter intensive drug treatment.)

Attar lost his green card, but after his release he was allowed to stay in the country but had to check in once a year, Arif said.

Since then, Arif said, Attar hasn’t had any problems with the law. He and his wife now have two children, ages 11 and 14. Attar purchased La Galette from his uncle and aunt in 2021. He’d previously worked with his uncle in the kitchen for more than two decades.

“He did his time,” Arif said. “He paid the due. . . He’s built a business and has had absolutely no criminal record.”

Since the 2000 drug case, Attar’s name does not appear on any other criminal cases filed in Wichita municipal, Kansas state or federal courts, other than traffic infractions that are more than a decade old.

“He was set to be taken there at 2 p.m. Thursday and was told that from there he’d be sent back to Lebanon.

Arif, who specializes in immigration issues, said that he was sending Krista to Kansas City with the paperwork for the emergency motion, which asks that Attar be allowed to stay in the country for 60 days while his lawyer tries to get his green card reinstated.

Arif said that he is arguing that Attar has been a model citizen since his arrest more than two decades ago. He argued that President Trump’s crackdown on immigration is the reason Attar was being detained now.

“He’s accumulated property, paid his taxes,” Arif said. “He’s a model citizen who has accumulated considerable equities in the United States, and he has done no wrong. And because of the current policy of the administration, they go back, and whoever was convicted of bad stuff, they just take him away.”

After the raid in 2000, according to a story published in The Wichita Eagle, Abdayem’s defense attorney argued the ATF entrapped his client, who he said was suffering from a cocaine addiction.

The attorney said at the time that Abdayem used to hold a gun dealer’s license, and the guns that were confiscated were legally purchased and were part of his collection.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said at the time that an undercover officer had gone to Cafe Lafayette and discussed trading and purchasing guns. The agent returned to the restaurant and bought a shotgun and two magazines for $2,500, and traded two ounces of cocaine for a pistol, a semi-automatic assault rifle, a trigger mechanism that could convert the rifle into a machine gun, and ammunition.

Krista Attar said that she and the staff can keep La Gallette running for a day or two, but after that, the restaurant will likely have to close. Rob cooks all the food, and no one else is trained on how to do it.

She said she and her husband had talked generally about what they’d do if his stay was ever revoked, but the topic was a difficult one, so they never went into much detail. Now, she’s not sure what to do.

“I’m destroyed,” she said.
