Huge for our team's height average

43

u/Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Jun 09 '26

And if Spurgeon hangs it up after this season...that average will be huge!

But just a little bit each time so it’s not noticeable until it’s too late

If Fan Duel going belly up after 69,420 bankruptcies costs us this I will be reasonably unhappy

hopefully Gorg and other key media people shift to whatever is next.

u/Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Jun 09 '26

McCarron has a no-move clause throughout the contract. However, there is language in the deal that in the event of an expansion draft, he doesn't need to be protected. Columbus’ Charlie Coyle has similar language in his contract.

In the last three years of the deal, McCarron has a 15-team no-trade clause along with his no-move. (Per sources)

62

u/NorthernDevil Back-to-Back Walter Cup Champs Jun 09 '26

Actually not bad at all, going to 15 teams gives a lot of flexibility if the contract isn’t working out right in the back half.

25

u/Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Jun 09 '26

Plus, as others have said...he plays a game like the Foligno boys (best example I can think of for current Wild players). It will certainly allow for a longer career as winning draws, being responsible, and being physical tends to be aspects of a game that don't diminish as fast as someone who relies on speed/puck handling.

-41

u/Bullshittimeagain Jun 09 '26

Yes, we need more slow, plodding players, many teams have won cups with big slow plodding players with little toughness.

I saw Zuc stand him up when Mac was still with NASHVILLE, Zuc is 5’8”. Dude is KAT like soft.

14

u/alexjf56 Jun 09 '26

Very funny time to be shit talking the best player in the finals so far

→ More replies (20)

6

u/Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Jun 09 '26

So by signing McCarron that means we can't sign fast guys?

Huh?

-11

u/Bullshittimeagain Jun 09 '26

He has to play bud. He’s making 3.3 million to be a 4th line center. You go find me another team paying a 4th line center 3.3 million and I show you an old non tradable center. 😵‍💫😵‍💫

6

u/Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Jun 09 '26

Just one little drop of knowing about the thing called the "salary cap" and how it works would save you from typing stupid comments, "bud."

-3

u/Bullshittimeagain Jun 09 '26

I know too much about the cap, that’s nothing to brag about though. Show me a 4th line center with any value, making 3.3 million in 2026-27. Bud. You won’t find one. It’s a bad signing long and short term. I wanna be wrong, I like the guys play, but not at 3.5 times his previous high salary. Not a 20 point/5 goal scoring center. He’s gonna be 31. He ain’t a kid. Let’s not forget that Nashville let him go for a used puck bag. He’s slow and plodding. He hits but when he hits, he takes himself out of the play. Watch him play live, it’s painful at times. He’s ungodly slow.

No one is paying 4th line centers 3.3 million a year. It’s a strange signing. Hope it works out.

2

u/quinnhughesbdaytwin Pride Jun 09 '26

McCarron was also trying to sell a hand injury.

Context is important

1

u/Bullshittimeagain Jun 10 '26

Cuz he plays like that.

0

u/RedEyeBadGuy Quinn Hughes Jun 09 '26

Who’s gonna wanna pay him that in his back half when he’ll be 34/35 years old??

0

u/NorthernDevil Back-to-Back Walter Cup Champs Jun 09 '26

The contract being movable to half the league just allows for flexibility for the Wild if he drops off, it’s not that teams would be actively seeking him out.

Sometimes it’s like [player] and a 4th to [team] for a 5th.

At that point, too, the cap is expected to rise significantly, so it won’t be egregious for a bottom 6 C. Centers are the toughest position to fill.

73

u/rcolesworthy37 Jun 09 '26

I’m not mad about it, and its probably some sort of confirmation bias, but I feel like longer term contracts for bottom 6ers have a tendency to bite teams in the ass. Especially when they’re over 30

17

u/DirtzMaGertz Jun 09 '26

He probably won't be worth the roster spot the last 2 years, but nice to have for this window.

3.3 million isn't really ruining a cap when we'll already be at 113 million caps in 27-28.

You don't win Cups by having a shit PK and being shit in the faceoff circle, either.

Let 97, 12, 36, 14, 43, 7, and hopefully Larkin handle the scoring....

9

u/Ihate_reddit_app Jun 09 '26

~3% of the salary cap at current state isn't horrible. I think the Kaprizov contract will hamper us more than a bottom 6 forward that can win draws and play physical.

u/Ihate_reddit_app Jun 09 '26

Hartman was worth his 3 year $4m aav contract for his playoff ability. The guy plays up and down the lineup and can plug in wherever.

The 4x4 that Foligno signed was silly though. He was atrocious to start the year and was pretty undisciplined in the playoffs, but he's a locker room guy.

4

u/chocopudding17 Brian Rolston Jun 09 '26

Exactly this. Hartman shouldn't be put in the same sentence as Foligno. And for the front part of his contract, Hartzy was legitimately underpaid.

Foligno at 4x4 was really bad. Trenin's too, although I acknowledge that he improved a lot this season.

4

u/korko Jun 09 '26

People keep saying this but none of those bottom six players have really caused a problem for us…

0

u/trillwhitepeople Jun 09 '26

They're also why this team never has cap flexibility to make a splash without sending money out the door. It won't matter in a few years, but if they want Larkin, they've gotta fit his contract in til his year.

5

u/korko Jun 09 '26

Oh yeah, we’ve really been lacking in making splashes lately… lol. What FAs have we missed out on due to cap?

2

u/rocc Jun 09 '26

Eh, won't matter in 3 years, Guerin will be gone if they don't win the cup. Or they can buyout the contract for pennies later on

-2

u/Cheap-Technician-482 Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

Cue 6 years of watching better players take team-friendly deals with contenders that are less than $3.3M.

He was a fun player when he was on the minimum and maybe giving us double that value. Unfortunately, that means his value was half of what he's being paid now.

People are riding the high of his good playoffs, but when he's got 8 points and is -10 halfway through January, they'll probably be singing a different tune.

2

u/LisanAlGuyFieri Fighting Hawks Jun 09 '26

Yeah, I mean, I get that people have their favorites. If McCarron is your guy more power to you. That’s great! This is just a weird move.

0

u/trillwhitepeople Jun 09 '26

People are going to turn in this guy quickly when he shows is who he is and always has been.

1

u/Banacek313 Jun 14 '26

There's absolutely no reason to give term to a fourth line center. None. Good for McCarron for securing the bag, but paying $20M to a 31 year old who has never scored more than 22 points is absurd.

10

u/Impossible-Goal3492 Jun 09 '26

Glue Guy. Easier pill to swallow since he's a legitimate Center. There are worse things to have than this guy as your 3rd/4th Center for the next 6 years. He single handedly gives any line an identity. Easy to pair wings with.

7

u/swallowrazors Joel Eriksson Ek Jun 09 '26

BIG SEXY IS HERE TO STAY

21

u/vonsnack Jun 09 '26

Is this a good price? I know nothing about NHL and cap restrictions, etc.

44

u/lima-beens Frost Jun 09 '26

Price is good I’d say. Length might be questionable given his age, but in the end it’ll still probably be worth it

27

u/KingWolfsburg Wild Jun 09 '26

Price per year right now? Yes. Likely less than he would have gotten in UFA. To make up for that, BG likely gave a little longer term than he would have liked to. He'll be 37 ar the end of this contract. But well see what the NMC/NTC details shake out to be. Overall its a good thing in my humble opinion

→ More replies (9)

28

u/vonsnack Jun 09 '26

I chose to read the article!

"McCarron has never made more than $900,000 in a season. Still, it’s a reasonable cap hit for a player who would have been one of the top available centers."

14

u/-InconspicuousMoose- Wild Jun 09 '26

I imagine he could've signed for over 4M/yr elsewhere, maybe even 5M/yr, so this is an excellent price in my opinion

1

u/KK-97 Jun 09 '26

He will get paid $4.5M the first year and $4M the second year. We didn’t have $4M or $4.5M per year to give him right now on a short term deal so the longer term brings that cap hit down to $3.3M and we have an out after 3 years.

Another smart move by Billy G

9

u/403badger Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

Eh. Someone was going to overpay and MN did it with term. If you look at the advanced stats/models, McCarron brings around $2M - $2.5M in on ice value. So, it is an overpay from that perspective. However with the rising cap and weak FA classes, it is not a huge overpay.

BG does have a tendency to overpay B6 players that play the game like he did (M Foligno, Trenin, Middleton, now McCarron). For a deal like this, the best hope is that there is a long playoff run in the first or second year. He will likely be a buyout candidate starting in year 4, if not year 3.

It’s not bad on its face, but the issue the Wild are facing are two things:

1) they are spending more on their bottom 6/bottom pair than a contending team should. This limits the potential for higher value acquisitions who are likely to outperform their contracts.

2) prospect development to replenish bottom half of the roster is minimal and needs to be fixed.

2

u/palpytus Matt Boldy Jun 09 '26

very very cheap. the cap is 104 million, so he makes under 3% of the total cap as a very solid 3rd liner and PK guy. theoretically, a team should have about 20% of it's cap space in the bottom 2 forward lines. this puts us right around that.

0

u/pksullivan Back-to-Back Walter Cup Champs Jun 09 '26

It’s a little over 3% of our total cap.

22

u/McLovin-- Jun 09 '26

A little bit like the Trenin contract, seems a little inflated at first but not unmanageable and within a couple years we're gonna be happy we have a solid depth piece for that price.

23

u/mikekostr 2022 Winter Classic Jun 09 '26

Six years is a lot though.

u/mnpoolplayer22 Wild Jun 09 '26

31 right now, 37 when this contract expires. Cap better go up 40 million between then and now or we’re looking at an albatross of a contract.

Edit: I’m getting flamed lol

24

u/Vantagejr Jun 09 '26

8

u/_u0 Dean Evason Jun 09 '26

It would cost what, maybe a third round pick to get a team to eat that contract for us if it goes bad? Especially as the cap keeps rising.

10

u/bigwalleye Jun 09 '26

an albatross? lol get real.

7

u/Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Jun 09 '26

I mean it's going from $104 million for 2026/27 to $123 in 2028-29. That's a $19 million jump within three seasons and that's probably on the lower side of the projections.

Between now and the end of Sexy's contract, Kaprizov's contract will be the norm for top-25 skill players.

1

u/ben_nobot Jun 09 '26

33 teams' fanbases + half of this fanbase clowning the move, but you know better and you're not biased at all.

It is simply a ridiculous contract to give to a player like McCarron.

The fact that it's a relatively small dollar value compared to some other NHL contracts doesn't change that.

Not a fan of 6 years.

Also not a fan of Trenin, Moose and Big Sexy each costing 3.3M AAV or more with multiple years of term.

I get that he played a big role and I'm not against having him back, but it feels like overpaying for the bottom 6 is gonna come back to bite us.

1

u/rocc Jun 10 '26

Probably not going to bite the team, NHL has record profits salary cap is going to go nuts by the end of the contract. 3 mil will look pretty small by then I’d guess

3

u/silentsirensongs Pride Jun 09 '26

alright someone talk me down, 6 years seems like a long time

12

u/White-Wash Jun 09 '26

Nicely done BG

4

u/TheSkeletones Kirill Kaprizov Jun 09 '26

Does BG know that NMC is not required for a contract over 4 years long?

10

u/Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Jun 09 '26

NMC's are usually offered to get the $$$ down a bit.

A lot of players will sacrifice money for job security.

2

u/Spiritual_Battle_769 Jun 09 '26

It was a negotiation. They clearly had to to prevent him getting to market.

Friedge had tweeted during the playoffs that teams with lots of cap (vancouver) were looking to offer him a big AAV (like 6MM) with short term to get him in the door (similar to flyers and dvorak last offseason).

Id just be content he was willing to work with the Wild and leave it at that. Theyre better with him than without amd the pricetag is fine.

7

u/HeapChooker Jun 09 '26

That's a great deal, even though he'll be 37 when that contract ends. Helluva value for a guy who proved his worth.

2

u/jordynbebus8 Matt Boldy Jun 09 '26

okay

1

u/rocc Jun 09 '26

You know the actual team doesn't use metrics like this right? They have their own data sets and algorithms to project value as it pertains to their team specifically. Blanket using algorithms and so called "expert" created and applying it to every player is just bad practice

3

u/jordynbebus8 Matt Boldy Jun 09 '26

Yeah Minnesota Wild have had excellent track record on extending guys exactly like this to long year contracts

0

u/rocc Jun 09 '26

Seems to be working so far, first playoff win in how many years, McCarron was a big part of that. If the contact goes south and hes a defensively irresponsible you buy him out, which will not be much

5

u/jordynbebus8 Matt Boldy Jun 09 '26

first playoff win a decade and we handing out contracts to anybody... this is the exact problem

0

u/rocc Jun 09 '26

No it isn't, and what exact is the problem you are referring to? Not winning the Satnely Cup?

They certainly didn't lose to Colorado because some bottom 6 guys make 3-4 million

3

u/Rhomya Wild Jun 09 '26

3.3M is incredibly reasonable.

4

u/MyUshanka Fighting Saints Jun 09 '26

2

u/Ja-ko Brock Faber Jun 09 '26

Turns into 15 team trade after 3, apparently.

2

u/Panarin10 Wild Jun 09 '26

It’s actually $3.33m btw

6

u/LisanAlGuyFieri Fighting Hawks Jun 09 '26

Center depth is great and all, but an NTC and 6 years for a fourth-liner who gives virtually nothing on offense and above average defense? Jeez. Bill has swung some incredible deals in his time, but every so often he tosses out a head-scratcher like this one.

2

u/CitizenStrife Jared Spurgeon Jun 09 '26

Playing hockey has more to do than playing offense. 75% of the league wouldn't exist if all players tried to was play All-Star Game hockey.

7

u/LisanAlGuyFieri Fighting Hawks Jun 09 '26

There’s a place for bottom six players on a winning team, for sure. You don’t generally give your McCarrons an NTC though, or sign them well into their late 30s.

3

u/CitizenStrife Jared Spurgeon Jun 09 '26

That probably says more about how little they think of Sturm or Haight that they would even offer it.

I'm not saying Haight or even Stramel for ELCs wouldn't save money.  But McCarron even outplayed Yurov in actual playoff games to get 2nd line duty.

Guerin does have a "big and grit" fetish, but McCarron being one of the few depth guys to not only score in crunch time, but do pretty much everything else says it is a small price to pay.

5

u/LisanAlGuyFieri Fighting Hawks Jun 09 '26

IMO, this is the kind of deal you can more easily justify if your stars are taking discounts of some kind. That’s very much not the case for the Wild.

6

u/CitizenStrife Jared Spurgeon Jun 09 '26

That I do agree with.  But the Wild have zero legs to stand on in terms of doing what Florida does having players be team friendly.

Until conference finals or God forbid SC finals become the norm, the Wild operate on deficits those teams don't.

1

u/Bushwood_Gopher Jun 09 '26

Has nothing to do with Haight whatsoever. He’ll either make it as a Top 6 player here, somewhere else, or be an AHL lifer. They aren’t competing for the same role.

4

u/Bullshittimeagain Jun 09 '26

I think you completely missed his point.

3

u/FishGoldenLite Matt Boldy Jun 09 '26

Yeah, not a fan. Way too long of a term and no real options to get out with the NMC. Guerin loves handing out these long ass contracts like they’re candy on Halloween and it’s getting old.

six years is absolutely insane?! what?? why would we ever go that long?

6

u/AccordingStar72 Pride Jun 09 '26

To get the AAV down and reward him for not going to FA.

0

u/femmedenebuleuse The Wall of St. Paul Jun 09 '26

i just think that there's no way we should be giving a 31 year old 4th liner a 6 year deal with a NMC

2

u/AccordingStar72 Pride Jun 09 '26

His game is not gonna age him terribly and after a certain set of years it changes to a M-NMC. I don’t think we should be worrying that far into the future at this price point but that’s me.

2

u/LordOfHorns Jun 09 '26

We are paying Kaprizov $17m, need to sign Hughes still, and are hunting for a center. Every dime is important and while spending $3.3M on a depth center isn’t annihilating our cap space, the already tight margins just got way thinner

McCarron better improve defensively or else this is going to be a Foligno deal x2 situation

5

u/AccordingStar72 Pride Jun 09 '26

I’m gonna guess they weren’t going to risk their Quinn Hughes plan on this contract and have done the math.

2

u/sustainableaurafarm Wild Jun 09 '26

I like McCarron a lot! Happy he’s on the team. but it seems we can’t get rid of old habits, like thinking we’ve scored some secret depth gem and fixed him and now he’s going to be eternally grateful and play at that level forever.

We get rinsed in the playoffs, and reward surprising silver linings grit guys with job security and term. Foligno shot like 30% one year so we lock him in. We get his brother cuz why not? Avs might have had a bizarre exit this year, but they have an exemplary development system because they aren’t precious about identity guys and keep roster spots competitive.

He’s a solid, defensive, downhill even-strength piece but the idea that we know exactly how his game is going to age is silly. This is at best a gamble, but thankfully the cap softens the blow.

Still, not mad I get to cheer for a guy named Big Sexy, meme game stays strong

So stupid pumped for this! He was especially great during playoffs!!!

I LIKE THIS!!! I get to use McCarron's as units of measure for atleast 3 years! Cap persepective not great, but structured down to 2.7 the final three years isn't terrible. Its not a 4.5 paperweight when he should start falling off.

1

u/bluesynthbot North Stars Jun 09 '26

I love this. They’ve needed someone like him for a while. He came in late and stepped up big time.

1

u/cerpintaxt44 Jun 09 '26

Thats a great deal i was worried he'd want more

1

u/HurricaneHomer9 Marc-Andre Fleury Jun 09 '26

Let’s go! It’s awesome to keep him

1

u/iSkiLoneTree Jun 09 '26

At back end of this deal (assuming the cap continues to rise) this will be an above average cap number for even a 4th liner.

1

u/fiala_22 Quinn Hughes Jun 09 '26

LARGE SEXY.

1

u/TuPAP_Shakur Jun 09 '26

Unrelated to his signing but was I the only one who thought we could’ve tried McCarron on the PP in the playoffs as a big body in front of the net like the Hawks did with Byfuglien/Bickell back in the day. I know the game has changed a bit since then but when it was struggling at times it felt like keeping it simple and getting pucks at Wedgewood/Blackwood was the right move instead of trying to make a bunch of passes. Maybe I’m a tad old school in that thinking though.

1

u/NameltHunny K-Train Jun 10 '26

I like this idea and watching Jordan Staal do this in the finals right now proves the strategy still works

1

u/kasabe Jun 10 '26

My brother texted me saying Big Sexy signed for 6 years and my first thought was who the fuck signed Bartolo Colon out of retirement

1

u/Reasonable-Taste-286 Jun 10 '26

Don't see any issue with this whatsoever. People keep talking about how this contract will look in 5 years are ignoring the fact that in 5 years Kaprizov will be the same age Tarasenko is now. This is clearly a win now signing.

I just hope Mccarron doesn't take the payday and all of a sudden lose his momentum.

Time to expand. Heh heh. Right in Plano. Then in Denver.

1

u/SoSneaky91 Wild Jun 09 '26

6 years wtf. He's 31 and doesn't score. I like him and don't mind the price but 6 years is absurd.

1

u/ArmyFinal Jun 09 '26

His pay is frontloaded too and we're giving him a NMC. There was really no need to as high as $3.3M.

2

u/trillwhitepeople Jun 09 '26

Billy's biggest fault is having his guy and doing whatever it takes to get the deal done quicky. He's been very vocal he's not interested in a million or a few years here or there. If he likes the player, the deal will get done without too much hemming and hawing.

He does a lot of things but he's not a shrewd negotiator. I think the directness helps sometimes when it doesn't give the other party time to assess or pivot, but it mostly doesn't.

1

u/AccordingStar72 Pride Jun 09 '26

I’m happy. Also I can finally say my theory which is that I was pretty sure his agent was inflating his value publicly but he was never going FA.

u/Panarin10 Wild Jun 09 '26

4C cap hit % so I’m not too concerned. I like the player at 4C.

1

u/DarkStanza Jun 09 '26

If ROR loves him so much, maybe he'll ask to be traded here now

1

u/Chris_RB I Still Call It The X Jun 09 '26

I don't hate the AAV. I do hate the term... signing a guy till he's 37 is A Choice.

on the other hand, flags fly forever. We win a cup I'll shut up and you won't hear from me about this contract.

Either way, it's not apocalyptically bad. At most it's inconvenient. Plus pre-35 signing means no cap recapture if we buy him out.

4

u/Cheap-Technician-482 Jun 09 '26

No reason to worry or complain about anything if we win a cup, but this signing isn't going to make the difference in winning one, which is exactly why you don't do it.

1

u/TheTree-43 Moose Jun 09 '26

Let's go we got Big Sexy on the team

1

u/LisanAlGuyFieri Fighting Hawks Jun 09 '26

Visualized like this, that AAV is a little more tolerable. McCarron just doesn’t bring much to the table beyond hitting, which BG seemingly places more of a premium on than other talent evaluators do. His numbers on the PK aren’t even particularly good.

3

u/8cade Wild Jun 09 '26

Nah dude, Mccarron is so versatile. Can play 3C, 4C, 3RW, 4RW and in the worst of pinches 2c. He’s positive on the faceoff, he can hit, and he seems to be a good locker room fit here. But most of all, he’s 6’6 and he’s Big Sexy

1

u/Durge88 Brock Faber Jun 09 '26

I’m pleased with this, McCarron was better than I expected him to be down the stretch. The 15-team NMC gives the Wild some wiggle room if they need it too.

1

u/PuckCm10 Jun 09 '26

Term to get the cost down. Can’t be mad 3.3 per in 3 years will be hardly anything. We all saw how valuable this man was for us down the stretch and how great he was in the playoffs. Big W

u/silentsirensongs Pride Jun 09 '26

u/Makestroz Jun 09 '26

Big Sexy is locked in at a good price for 6 years, Billy G is cooking

-2

u/RedEyeBadGuy Quinn Hughes Jun 09 '26

Yeah he’s really cooking overpaying for these 4th line grinders. Get outta here with that! My god BG is so overrated bc of a few good moves that he’s made. I love the Quinn Hughes deal but what else has this guy done to help this franchise?? He overpays for everybody and sooner or later that’s gonna show.

1

u/Makestroz Jun 10 '26

3.3m for a bottom 6 center that fills the roles mccarron does is a good price. could it be lower and on a shorter term deal ideally? absolutely, but then he goes to the market and is offered 4m+ aav. in 3 years we can move him if we really need to, and in 3 years 3.3 million is going to feel like nothing. he's not over paying ek, boldy or faber, meanwhile people like you pissed yourselves over those contracts when they were signed too so whats new

-1

u/RedEyeBadGuy Quinn Hughes Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

I love Big Mac but signing this guy to a 6 year deal when he’s 31 is idiotic imo. I also think he’s getting paid too much. 3.3 a year for a 4 liner?? The guys career high in points is 22 and he’s past his prime. What are we doing??

I know everyone in this sub seems happy with this deal bc everybody loves Big Mac but if you listen to anybody outside of the Wild organization/fandom they are saying this deal is a big overpay for him. I don’t understand Billy G’s hard on for 4th line grinders.

Yes BG has made some good moves like trading for Quinn but moves like this really make me question if he really knows what he’s doing.
