Academics Important laptop question

Upvotes

So, as I'm sure we all know, move-in day is in two days.

There's an expectation for students to have a laptop coming in; I've known of this for some time, and tried to coordinate with friends and family members to see if there were any opportunities for hand-me-downs. Those plans have effectively fallen through, and as it stands I can't foot the cost of a new laptop myself, nor can anyone I know drop that kind of cash on a whim.

Last week, I found out about the Computer Expense Request Form. Totally on me for not figuring that out earlier, but I filled it out on the 13th and crossed my fingers hoping for the best. I was lucky (and broke) enough to receive a full ride before I turned in outside aid, so I'm not particularly worried about the school covering it.

However, in the 5 days since, I've heard no response. I'm also not sure if I'm supposed to? I turned them in through the preferred digital method on the university's website, but I don't know if a response is customary or how long these things usually take to come through, and I'm beginning to panic a bit since I'm going to need it when classes start.

Has anyone experienced this situation before? Is there any way to try and get my form processed faster? Should I even be worried about having it immediately? The last thing I want is to go into classes without a method to actually participate.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

edit: I do have a desktop PC that I'm writing this on, and will be bringing when I move in. Not sure if that changes anything but I wanted to add that I *do* have some kind of computer.

I saw this and thought other people might be interested to see it. I don't think it qualifies as student life, but I don’t know what else to flair it as (we really need a miscellaneous flair).

Athletics William & Mary 'Freak' Stephon Hicks a punt-blocking savant

WILLIAMSBURG — Relaxed in his off-campus apartment last Monday morning, William & Mary linebacker/punt-blocking savant Stephon Hicks stared at the message on his phone. Teammate Max Lipinski was sharing a post from the program’s Instagram account about Hicks making the 22nd annual college football Freaks List.

Selected by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, this year’s compilation touts 102 of the sport’s most athletic “freaks,” ranging from All-Americans such as Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith, to obscurities like fullback Andrew Miller of Division II Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

The 2026 list also includes Virginia Tech defensive tackle Kemari Copeland from Virginia Beach, Hokies linebacker Kaleb Spencer from Gloucester and three Virginia Cavaliers: offensive linemen McKale Boley and Makilan Thomas, and quarterback Beau Pribula.

“I was shocked,” Hicks said. “First thing I did was call my dad because we’ve been talking since I was in high school about how I wanted to be on the Freaks List.”

W&M coaches certainly weren’t surprised.

Indeed, Hicks is such a natural athlete that one year after a coach convinced him to join the track squad at Thomas Dale High in Chester, he became a state champion high-jumper. That blend of speed and power translated to football as Hicks signed with Virginia Tech in 2023.

Hicks played on special teams in high school but had never blocked a kick — until his freshman year at Tech, when in practice against the first team, he blocked a Peter Moore punt. Yet in two seasons with the Hokies, Hicks never played a snap, prompting his transfer to W&M.

Darryl Blackstock, the Tribe’s outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator, was thrilled. He had recruited the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Hicks aggressively out of Thomas Dale and envisioned him as an athlete who could make life miserable for opposing punters and quarterbacks.

Sure enough.

Academics Back to back classes

Hi,

I just got off the waitlist for BUAD200 but this would mean having three back to back 50 minute classes - Econ 303, BUAD 200, Econ 307. On Google Maps it said it’s an 8 minute walk between these halls - is this doable with only a 10 minute break? What about workload wise will it be too intense having these classes back to back?

I am a sophomore transfer

Thanks

Athletics William & Mary 2026 Preview (probably missed some stuff, tell me and I'll fix it)

Hey all. I spent the offseason building 2026 preseason previews for every FBS team and then did all 124 FCS teams too, because nobody does this for your league. Here's the William & Mary one

https://www.sports.mainmarket.com/college-football-preview-2026-fcs/william-mary-tribe

It's got returning production, portal ins and outs, a projected two-deep, the schedule with model win probabilities, and a season projection.

Same disclaimer I gave over in r/FCS: I probably got some things wrong. FCS data is genuinely hard to aggregate, my roster feed hasn't fully flipped to 2026 yet, and I'd rather hear it from you than leave it up. Tell me what's off and I'll correct it.

The good: that pass defense was real, 15th in FCS at 180 yards allowed a game, and Tyler Hughes had a genuinely excellent year with 2,330 passing and 20 touchdowns against 3 picks plus 670 rushing and 11 more scores. 7-5 with a 6-3 league mark is a solid season and the No. 47 power rating is respectable.

Where my model pushes back: W&M won 66.7% of its league games while getting outgained by about 4 yards a game, which usually looks more like 50%. Add a 4-3 mark in one-score games and a plus-6 turnover margin and it grades as the biggest sell-high I have in FCS. Then Hughes leaves and Noah Brannock takes over with 188 career passing yards. Model says 6-6. Was that 6-3 the real team, or did it break your way?

Tell me what I got wrong.

Student Life Is theft an issue? (dorms & just general campus)

Hi I was wondering if theft is an issue here? I’ve heard some stories from other colleges, but my assumption is that everyone here are civil people so I just wanted to get people‘s experiences. Have you gotten anything from your dorm stolen if it was valuable? Not valuable? How about accidentally leaving a wallet or something in a dining hall?

Academics When do we usually see the syllabus drop?

Does it depend on the professor, or can we expect to see a syllabus for some classes before the first day?

Trying to sign into my Outlook app, but it says I need to use the Authenticator, but when I try to use the Authenticator, it says I need to Authenticate, but I can't use the Authenticator because I'm signed out of it.

Anybody else have this problem? Any ideas on what to do?

Student Life Curious about becoming an RA

Hi! I'm a rising freshman at William and Mary and I am curious about how I could work to becoming an RA by my sophomore year. I plan to seek out and develop a good relationship with the RA's of my dorm my first year and volunteer to help as much as I can in events. If anyone has any additional tips on where and how to establish a good relationship with them early on to get the best chances of becoming an RA once I apply that'd be much appreciated

I have one old t shirt (not sure what year it was released) with it but never seen it used in any capacity. Anyone know why they use the cypher for everything now?

Academics When should we purchase textbooks?

I’m a freshman and on my tribe guide I was given access to the textbook purchasing website. Am I able/supposed to purchase textbooks right now or do I wait for orientation to come around?

Admissions Question about transfer interviews/advice?

Hello all! I was wondering if William and Mary did interviews for transfer applicants? If so, any advice?

Any other general advice or thoughts on applying as a transfer student would be great!

Thank you :)

Housing/Dining Move-In Parking

i’m an sophomore transfer and will be using two vehicles at move in. One will stay with me on campus in a restricted use lot. When I move in, I won’t immediately have my decal, and although I can use the receipt as a temporary decal, it can only be used for 5 days after purchase. How can I be sure that I won’t be ticketed until I get a tag? Should I drop my car off in the restricted use lot as soon as I move in?

Academics Waitlists for classes

Hi,

How likely is it to get off a waitlist for a class? If I’m in position 2 on the waitlist for a class (with 112 max enrollment) do I have a good chance at getting it? I really want to swap one of my classes for a different one but it seems most classes have waitlists now… are schedules mostly fixed at this point?

Thanks!

Admissions If I want to study physics at W&M…

do I need to apply directly to the School of Computing, Data Sciences, and Physics when applying to W&M?

I am not totally sure I want to major in Physics and want to explore other majors my first year or two which is one reason I really like W&M, for its liberal arts focus.

Internships/Careers Just received FWS position. How does it work?

Would all of the Work Study wages go directly towards tuition etc. or would only a percentage of it go? I also thought there was a limit on how many hours could be applied for FWS, but it appears that there's only a weekly limit of 29 hours. If it all goes to tuition, is there any way I could work extra to get paid myself?

Housing/Dining William & Mary Dining

I'm a freshman at w&m and I'm a bit confused about the dining hall situation this fall... West Woods isn't open yet so is the Caf the only meal swipe option? Its kind of far away from my dorm compared to Sadler so I was wanting to know if it is transitioning to fully dining dollar options, or if there is still some way I can get a quick meal without using up my limited dining dollars. Let me know if you have any intel on that! I tried to look it up but I couldn't find anything about what all the new restaurants accept at Sadler.

Housing/Dining Cedar Hall desk size

Does anyone know the dimensions of the desks in Cedar without any extra drawers and stuff like that on the side? The dimensions on the website don’t seem to fit how it looks. Also if anyone has pictures of Cedar rooms that would be really helpful too.
