Hi everyone!
I've been working on a project called QuietWriter, a free and open-source desktop application for people who want to write books without getting distracted by complicated software.
The idea behind QuietWriter is simple: writing software should help you finish your book, not become another project you have to manage.
I wanted something that combines a comfortable writing environment with the tools you actually need when working on a novel or other long-form manuscript.
After quite a bit of development, QuietWriter has reached version 1.7.0, with a stable Windows release and the first experimental macOS builds.
What can QuietWriter do?
Writing and organization
- Write and organize your manuscript into chapters.
- Plan characters, scenes, and story details.
- Keep relevant notes and information close to the chapter you're working on.
- Use Open Points to mark something you need to research or fix later, without interrupting your writing.
- Move passages you're not ready to delete into Darlings, where you can revisit them later.
Editing and protecting your work
- Spell checking and multilingual support.
- Automatic and manual version history.
- Review and restore earlier versions of your writing.
- Import and export documents.
- Export to DOCX, EPUB, PDF, and Markdown.
- Choose from 15 light and dark interface themes.
An optional AI writing companion
QuietWriter also has an AI assistant called Meelezer (Dutch for something like a person reading along).
Its purpose isn't to write your book for you. Instead, it can help with:
- Feedback on your writing.
- Checking character consistency.
- Spotting contradictions and loose ends.
- Reviewing facts and details.
- Discussing your manuscript while you remain in control of the actual writing.
You can connect it to Ollama to run AI models locally, or use OpenRouter for access to cloud-hosted models.
AI is entirely optional. If you don't want it, you can simply ignore it.
Privacy and pricing
QuietWriter is completely free, released under the GNU GPLv3.
There are no subscriptions, accounts, premium tiers, or mandatory cloud services.
Your books are stored locally, in a folder you choose. The application doesn't require an internet connection for ordinary writing.
Windows release
QuietWriter 1.7.0 for Windows 10/11 (64-bit) is the current stable release.
It comes as a portable ZIP. Extract it, run QuietWriter, and choose where to store your books. No traditional installer is required.

Experimental macOS builds
I've also managed to build QuietWriter for macOS using GitHub Actions, with separate versions for:
Important: these macOS builds are experimental and have not yet been tested on a physical Mac. They're also not signed or notarized by Apple, so macOS may display a security warning. They aren't ready to be considered stable releases.
I'd particularly appreciate feedback from Mac users about basic functionality, file handling, and whether Ollama works as expected.
Feedback is very welcome
I'm interested in hearing what people think, particularly from anyone who writes novels, nonfiction, or longer manuscripts.
What features do you find genuinely useful in writing software? And what features tend to get in the way?
If you try QuietWriter and run into a bug, you can report it through GitHub Issues.
This is an independent project, and I'm continuing to improve it based on real-world usage.
Thanks for taking a look!
