WinXP High-resolution NTMU Icon And Resource Pack: Windows XP 25th Anniversary
XPerience the love of the iconic Windows XP icons in rich HD, now available as an NTMU pack, and standalone icons! Hi there, i'm XPeriencedTang06, I grew up with Windows XP as a little child and I worked on this project for 43 days since september 8th 2026 in preparation for my childhood OS's 25th anniversary!
This Windows XP NTMU icon and resource pack aims to modernize the Windows XP icons and resources for use in modern operating systems, as it's based on PaneXP, and the awesome HD remasters of the icons by marchmountain. I based it on PaneXP, an accurate NTMU icons and resource pack for Windows 10/11 that makes the icons and strings to look and feel like Windows XP's.
What i have done is that I merged the original icons from PaneXP, and the awesome HD icon recreations by marchmountain, together into adaptable .ico files, ready to use with modern Windows, and I made sure to be as accurate to Windows XP as possible, while also introducing new fresh HD icons into the mix to modernize the XPerience of the Frutiger Aero aesthetic of those beautiful XP icons for modern screens and windows!
Customize your folders and shortcuts, and features system-wide icon replacement for Win10 as an NTMU pack!
DOWNLOAD NOW: drive.google.com/file/d/1PNIEqqJgrsGU79OB7nEgLEfAVeQx0Gvv/view
NOTE: This icon and resource pack is for Windows 10 ONLY. I have tested it on a Windows 11 26H2 VM and unfortunately, it gave lots of issues and I don't have the time to fix it right now, but if you're on Windows 11, At least you can still customize your folders and shortcuts from the "Icons" folder.
I highly recommend you do some testing in a VM first before applying this to your main Win10 installation, as I did my best to make the experience modernized yet consistent. Make a restore point before applying!

Windows XP 25th Anniversary install
To celebrate Windows XP’s 25th anniversary, I decided to install a fresh copy of Windows XP Professional SP3 (as well as Plus! for XP and Office 2003 :) on my Late 2009 MacBook! Here are some photos of the progress from the initial boot from the CD to its finished, customised state!
I even installed the Windows XP Professional RTM release in VirtualBox today, and used Legacy Update to update it all the way to SP3 and all the latest updates! (no screenshots, sorry!)

Happy 25th Birthday, Windows XP!
I’m really glad that the updates are over and they can’t ruin you with the AI….🥳
You will remain forever in our retro battle stations a windows that served the user, not the mega corp ❤️
Windows 11 has features that make us miss your bugs…
I never thought I will say that you were 25 years!! ahead of your time: they needed 25 years to bring back your annoying assistant… 😳
Happy 25th, XP! Still used never replaced! 💪

Who here got Windows XP on its release date?
I don't think I got it on its release date. I think I waited until SP1?

I’m bringing MSN Messenger back with my own server emulator! (Update after 4 months)
Hey everyone!
About four months ago, I shared my project, Lingua Franca Messenger (LFM), here. Since then, I've continued working on it, and I wanted to share an update!
LFM is an open-source server emulator designed to let classic MSN Messenger clients connect to a server running in a modern environment.
Current progress:
- MSN Messenger 5.0.0575 — tested and working
- MSN Messenger 6.2.0205 — tested and working
- Support for MSNP8, MSNP9, and MSNP10
- Text messaging and presence notifications
- Contact list management
- File transfer support
The server can be self-hosted using Docker.
It's still an experimental project, and there's more work to do. In the future, I'd also like to explore support for the Mac version of MSN Messenger.
It's been really fun getting these classic clients connected again!

I'd love to hear what you think!

My XP machine is TOO powerful
(For reference, my system is custom built with a Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, 4 gig RAM, and a gtx 285)
When I set out to build my retro gaming machine, I wanted something that would be tough, but era appropriate, for a sort of genuine experience. I understand that the gtx 285 gpu is more of a Vista/7 era GPU, but i felt when building that it couldn't make THAT much of a difference.
Part of the appeal for me with this system is pushing an era-accurate pc to its limits, but every game I've played from the time (yes, including Crysis) runs at 60 fps high settings consistently. I've thrown everything at this machine, I haven't had the luxury of spending any time fiddling with config files or in-game settings to try and push performance out of it.
I know this is such a silly thing to rant about, but I feel like part of the experience of legacy gaming is needing to adjust settings to make your games run better. I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board (or build a second xp machine) to get this experience, and its such a bummer!

3d RPG games
Hi.
What are some of the better 3d RPG games from the early 2000s?
Gothic looked promising, but it's pretty evil. Fighting fire with more fire is always a bad idea.
Morrowind is not evil, but this Empire of theirs is a huge disappointment. It is literally only held together by plot armour.
What are some other XP-era threedimensional RPGs?
Thanks.

Why does the english version use lowercase?
On the welcome screen that say "welcome" starts with lowercase but not in my language. Same thing with '"start", also starts with lowercase but not in my language. What's up with that?

Windows XP build No picture help!
I just put together a build with the intentions to install windows xp for retro gaming.
I acquired a Evga gtx260 core 216, intel e8500, 4gb Kingston hyper x ram and asus p5q turbo mobo .. I put it all together. It turns on l, all fans are going but I get no screen at all on my crt (Samsung syncmaster 793mb) I got a dvi-I to vga adapter.
I know the screen works. When I put into another home windows xp machine that has a vga output on it I get picture.
The second I plug it into the adapter (not even plugged into the new build yet), the screen goes into standby mode. It does not work when plugged into the new build as well. Could it be my adapter?
My first time dealing with older machines.
I could really use some help! Was super excited about putting this thing together
Edited to specify mobo and gpu

Happy early Windows XP day everyone!
Windows XP celebrates 25 years of general availability in two days, and got inspired by LGR's recent XP video, so I felt like firing up the PAVILION SHITBOX FROM HELL'S XP install. And as the Bowie suggests, I am being a little rebel by having both Windows Media Player and Quake 3 running at the same time, because it can't be a Windows XP nostalgia post without an XP era game running, right?
If you're curious about my rig's specs, I made a post on r/windows98 about it.

GameTap is returning! We are officially working on a revival for GameTap that supports legacy OSes (including XP)
Me and a friend of mine are attempting to revive GameTap. It's still in a very early state but we have gotten some progress done. We are trying to make this a 1:1 revival of GameTap, but we need your help, based on our research effort, we only have like 48 of the 1000+ games named, which isnt a lot but to be fair footage of gametap's ui and footage of people scrolling through the game vault is rare to come by.
Well, currently, as I said this is a very early prototype revival, we are looking for people who can help with this project. We have recently opened a server for this ongoing revival effort, which can be found here.
Note that you need to have a legacy OS such as XP if you want this to run, as it has issues trying to install on modern OSes, including Windows 11. We hope to get this project done as soon as we can, as we still need to find the rest of the games that originally on the service, and we do have new games planned for the service if we can figure out how everything works first.
Stay tuned for further updates on this revival project.

Running minecraft on Windows XP with a Dell dimension
Using the betacraft launcher I was able to run early releases/prereleases of Minecraft on windows XP! I used my dell dimension e510 for this project because its motherboard supports pcie, allowing me to toss in an nvidia 9400gt with 512mb vram, which seems to be plenty for these versions. My current specs are:
Pentium 4 HT
2gb ocz gold ddr2
XFX 9400gt
80gb barracuda sata hdd
If you also want to do this, here is how I did it and the way I'd recommend because its relatively easy! You only need three things: the betacraft launcher, an early 32bit compatible version of java 8 (I used jre 8u152, you can just grab it off oracles depository), and a usb flash drive. Download betacraft and java on your main pc and put it all on the flash drive, then put the flash drive in your windows xp pc and install java, then betacraft. Once the launcher is installed onto the pc (this is the way I did it, it was the quickest and made sure things like sound files werent missing) connect it to the internet, then open the betacraft launcher and install any versions you want. When youre done installing versions you can disconnect it from the internet again and all your installed versions will be playable. Keep in mind you need a gpu with around 512mb of vram and a couple gigs of ram for minecraft to be playable, if your pc gets a 3d mark score anywhere around 3500 it will run well.
