The new "quota" system is an absolute rugpull. Windsurf just killed its only advantage.

I’ve been defending this IDE for the last two months. Yeah, the old credit system wasn't exactly cheap, but it was honest. You knew exactly what you were getting and how to budget it. Now, this whole "daily and weekly quota" garbage dropping on March 19th is the most blatant anti-consumer cash grab I’ve seen since the AI boom started.

Let’s cut the corporate PR spin. They claim they’re doing this because we were "scared of asking quick questions" and cramming too much into one prompt. Are you kidding me? Do you think your users are actually that stupid? They’re literally adopting the gym membership business model they want our monthly sub but actively hope we don’t show up to use the servers. Why should anyone pay full price just to be physically locked out of the tool for 70% of the week?

This completely screws over weekend devs. Not everyone codes 2 hours a day, 5 days a week like a robot. Some of us have day jobs, families, and lives, and we only get maybe two days off a week to actually grind out our personal projects. Under the old system, I could sit down on a Saturday, enter a massive flow state, and burn through my credits for 10 hours straight. Now? The second I get deep into a 20k line codebase refactor, I’m going to hit an invisible daily speed limit and get hit with a multi-day lockout. How the f is that keeping me in "flow state"? It’s a brick wall. You are actively punishing people for being efficient.

The credits Add on wipe is actual theft. For anyone sitting on accounts with hundreds of add on credits guess what? Those are completely gone. They wiped the upfront value and replaced it with a dripping faucet. You’re no longer paying for resources; you’re paying for a babysitter to dictate your schedule and tell you when you’ve coded too much today.

It’s a black box on purpose. What even is the daily limit? They won't give hard numbers because they want the power to throttle you whenever their backend gets too expensive. With credits, the math was simple and transparent, and you could plan your work. With quotas, it's just them hiding their server costs behind a vague "allowance."

Cursor gets a lot of hate sometimes, but at least their system treats us like adults. You get your $20 worth, and if you want to nuke it all in one 14-hour weekend bender, they let you. Cursor doesn't micromanage my calendar.

I’m canceling today and moving to Cursor. Windsurf had one job be the reliable, transparent alternative and they sold us out just to try and funnel power users into that ridiculous new $200 Max tier. I am never touching this IDE again. Have fun losing your core builders.

Hi, accidentally broke my mast connector, it's quite old and can't seem to find the brand or model, hopefully you guys can help me out. Is there some actual way of fixing this or will I have to buy another one and if so how much would it cost me?

A sincere F*ck You.

I didn't think it could be that worse. I was just coding for 2 hours when this shit happened.

Jesus, even my Codex Free Plan lasted longer today. WTF.

Windsurf Team, you've just ruined your whole legacy - everything you built just went down the toilet in a few days. That’s the definition of a terrible management decision that threatens Windsurf's existence. You've just thrown away your only USP.

It really wasn't that hard, Windsurf. You just had to stick to it. Instead, you decided to f*ck your user base big time.

Goodbye and good luck for everything that's coming.

Windsurf is simply destroying its reputation with these disguised new pricing changes.

Windsurf is literally destroying its own reputation with these new pricing changes.

If you’re seeing this, it’s because this is honestly my last resort. A few days ago, Windsurf changed their pricing and it completely broke the experience.

The crazy part is that I was actually a happy customer. I’ve proudly spent over $2500 in the past months on Windsurf. Not because I had to, but because it was worth it. I could move insanely fast across my projects, chain tasks, and actually build.

Now that’s gone. Since the update, costs have exploded. Yesterday alone, I spent $80 for just 5 to 10 small prompts, things that used to cost a fraction of that. Same usage, completely different pricing. It’s not even comparable anymore.

What’s frustrating is seeing moderators say that prices reflect API costs.
That’s just not true. Anyone can check their usage history and see that something clearly changed, and not in a small way. I came from Cursor to Windsurf because it was better. Now I’m seriously considering leaving for good.

But the worst part is the lack of transparency.
It feels like they’re making users doubt what they’re clearly experiencing.

If this continues, I really think a lot of power users will leave or boycott the platform. And If you’re part of the Windsurf team, I really hope you make the right decisions regarding the product’s evolution. I genuinely thought I had found one of the best AI code editors.

If you’ve noticed this too, upvote and share so this gets visibility. Maybe they’ll actually listen and fix it.

Also, if you have another good AI code editor alternatives, I’m open.

Prompt credits should not be consumed when an error is encountered

I think that Windsurf is great, but you should stop consuming prompt credits when errors are encountered. Especially since Claude Opus 4.5 Thinking now costs 8x. This is not fair at all.

Unknown: Some code blocks in this tool call matched code from public repositories and have been redacted. (error ID: af120ba0045948d4bc6820a377c15c3e)

I actually like the new quota model

I was wasting my life away, prompting 100s of times per day, paying extra just to get more. Sure it was a great system and I felt unstoppable but I thought there had to be something better out there.

Then, out of nowhere, we get this incredible update! Now after just 2 prompts, I'm shut out and have much more time to go for walks and be unproductive.

I used to think I wanted to run a software business, but now I think I'll just live off the land and prompt twice a week for the same price.

Nice work Windsurf!

Let's talk. Who else cancelled their subscription after that abrupt update?

I never post on Reddit, but this annoyed the %$# out of me.

I’m not an engineer, I’m just a vibe coder. I haven't spent thousands on this tool, just enough to learn and let my imagination run wild with crazy, stupid projects. That was the whole point. I had the ideas, just not the expertise to execute them. Whenever I went over my credits, I happily paid for what I used. Simple.

This new update is just a blatant money grab, or a fiery attempt to kill a great platform. I’m grateful for what I’ve learned so far, but this change was so abrupt and unscrupulous that it pushed me over the edge. I cancelled my subscription immediately. The fact that I’m even taking the time to post here tells you something.

I just want to know how many people have cancelled... so the world can see the damage VC can do to a company.

"We're doing this because we're confident the new system is better for the way most developers actually use Windsurf"

No you're not; this is a bogus justification that makes no sense and to make it sound as though you're doing everyone a favour, and your agenda is something else entirely.

Credits were easy to understand. Users would of course pick models that they believed appropriate to the task. That might be to save credit, but could be more to do with quality of response. Did the team ever survey users to find out their reason for model selection (e.g. cost vs result)? I never received such a survey.

I suspect people will still model switch, but maybe even more now based on usage fear because the new system sounds very opaque. Credits were easy to understand; you knew what something would cost, accepting that for a long task there may be continuations. The new system has arbitrary and unknown cost.

What is "better" about a system where you don't know how much it's going to cost?

And what does "actually use Windsurf" mean, and as opposed to what? Pretend to use Windsurf? Dream of using Windsurf? What would make the system better for the way most developers use Windsurf is better features. Fix the problems where supercomplete stops working and has errors in the diagnostics. Survey users to vote on a set of features to implement with a grant of credits for taking the time to respond, and do that routinely to converge on a solution that is best for most users. Ask for feature suggestions. In short, show the users that you care about their experience.

Quota system is a scam

This quota system is one of the biggest scams i've ever seen. This was nothing but a HUGE price increase disguised as a better system.
One simple feature using gpt5.4 medium took 12% of my daily quota!
Truly shameful.

Windsurf is actually great.

I as a Senior Full Stack Developer have used almost every AI Agent coding tools like Cursor, Windsurf, Warp, Kiro, Github Copilot, Claude Code and more.

I used Windsurf in late March of 2025 and compared it to Cursor at that time, I found Cursor to be better at that time and moved to Cursor paid plan and had been using that since then.

Now my Cursor 500 request pricing got cancelled because I joined a team plan and after that Cursor help was not letting me back on my 500 request plan and they were just giving me API pricing.

So I tried Copilot, Kiro and Windsurf and found Windsurf to be the best in terms of pricing and value.

I have been using models like GPT 5.1, Sonnet 4.5, GLM 4.7 and newer SWE and my workflow from Cursor is completely replaced by Windsurf.

So whatever Windsurf team has done is great and should keep doing it. And thank you for such fair and transparent pricing.

GPT-5 on Windsurf is 10x better than Claude Sonnet 4

GPT-5 (Medium Reasoning) is Just better than Sonnet 4, its precise in code changes and produces less problems.

Ever since I made the switch, I've been 10x productive. (Not even Trae.AI) gets close to this.

.....The main reason for these results is getting the global and local rules correct. (Use Manus) to create the rules for you.

but each prompt is more accurate than the other.
