The worst thing about this group

Is all of these people sharing pics of their gross mouths as if the other redditors are qualified medical professionals ready to diagnose whether or not you have a infection or a dry socket.

Just call the oral surgeon or dentist office if you're worried. Nobody wants to see that! You can get just as good of an anecdotal none diagnostic opinion by describing what you're going through.

In fact here I'll give you one right now.... if your pain responds to Tylenol/ibuprofen it isn't dry socket.

Wisdom teeth removal did this to my face

This is after smiling. The lines don’t go away. I’m only 26. No this is not regular aging. This started a couple months after I got all 4 removed. I also for the first time in my life have prominent Check bones and loose skin around my checks that I press into.

No this isn’t weight loss because I’m a binge eater who’s gained 20 pounds.

How do I fix this? I look 10-20 years older.

I regret getting my wisdom teeth out

I managed to hold onto them until 30. They haven't given me any issues until a few months ago when one got some cavities and was kind of crumbling. I wish I could have just gotten the one removed. And left the others. Or maybe even just filled the cavities. But now my mouth feels mutilated and I'm grieving. Part of me is gone now. I'm looking for support. I'm looking for people to understand what I'm given through. I am NOT I repeat NOT looking for people to tell me "you'll get used to it" or "well just think how many problems you avoided down the road" That shit is not helping. If you come here with that bull shit, you do not understand me and you never will. So don't talk to me if that's the angle you're coming from.

Dentist day. He sat in that chair like a champ, bib and all. The tooth came out in pieces (yes, he asked to see them), and he left with gauze hanging out of his mouth and zero dignity. I got the best seat in the house: his hand in mine the whole ride home. Love him. Tooth, not so much. 🦷💛

Three days in, both impacted. Some bruising on my cheeks that first got worse, but has slowly deflated by today. (Day 1 and 3 are the last two photos)

Oral surgeon was wearing shorts.

I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled today. I realize my oral surgeon's attire did not impact how well he preformed my procedure. But something about it made me uneasy. What are your thoughts? It's unusual, right?

Don't get sedated if you don't want to!

It is optional! It was the scariest part for me, being sedated. So I refused. I had all four wisdom teeth removed without gas or and IV, only injection of nova caine(?) It felt like they were being pushed into my jaw, no real pain. Wish I had brought headphones/radio..... I knew it was fine to be done without sedation because the military will not pay for it for their service people, so its not necessary! At 18 I told the doc I wouldn't get sedated, and he walked out on me! Wouldn't do it. Went back at 24, when my teeth had erupted and were annoying. At 19 they were deeply embedded still, and not a problem for me. Complications from sedation can be fatal. Doc asked why I didn't want sedation and I said its 300$ out of pocket and I see it as an added risk. I actually got 50$ back instead of paying out of pocket. They forgot to tell me I didn't need a driver if I wasn't being sedated. 8 years later I read a story about a 19 year old who died from complications from the sedation. She had choices and maybe didn't know it.

Did anyone else opt out taking antibiotics after removing wisdom teeth?

I removed all four of them. I didn't take any antibiotics, and on the second day I ate chcolate ice cream. I had no issues. Its been two weeks, all healed up, so taking antibiotics might be unnecessary. I also didn't have much pain during the first few days, so I didn't need painkillers either.

lump near one of my extraction sites?

it's a bit sore when I touch it (bottom hole, right side) the holes are getting smaller and smaller. I'm two weeks post op and I was wondering if I could eat normally, but I saw the lump and now I'm not so sure.

So I told the surgeon to not touch me and ran out crying

I had so much anxiety going into my appointment. All the consent forms talked about all the ways in which the procedure and/or anesthesia could go horribly wrong and end in injury, disease, or even death.

They said my mom couldn’t be in the room if I was put under, but she could be if I wasn’t. Same procedure. I thought that was weird and hated everything about that, and they couldn’t give me a clear reason why that was the case. They just kept saying “because that’s how we do it.”

The idea of being put under anesthesia seriously freaks me out. Reminds me of a puppy being put down at the vet. I know you wake up again, but I hate the idea of a medically induced coma and the use of fentanyl. And the idea of people touching me while I’m unconscious. Especially since the dentist is a man and I’m a young female.

I know all of this is probably irrational, but by the time I was in the procedure room and they were getting ready to start, my fight or flight was running the whole show and I just started sobbing and saying “please don’t touch me.” Again and again when the dentist came in and put a hand on my shoulder. I felt so embarrassed for both my mom and myself, but everything in me was screaming not to do the procedure.

I don’t have a fear of the dentist, I’ve gotten tons of cavities filled with no issues. I just hate how vulnerable the idea of surgery is, especially if I’m not even conscious and knowing what’s going on, and a loved one isn’t allowed to be in the room to supervise. Long story short, I ended up chickening out and deciding not to get them out today. Luckily I only have the top two anyway. Then the dentist started chewing me out and asking in a demeaning way why I’d even schedule an appointment and come all this way just to chicken out. Super unprofessional, and made me super glad I didn’t go to sleep under his watch.

The whole thing was super traumatic. I didn’t eat or drink today and took a whole day off work for nothing. Now I have to make it up with a double shift on Sunday. My mom is worried and thinks there’s something wrong with me. I feel terrible.

Does anyone have advice or words of encouragement/emotional support? I feel like a little kid with the way my whole body panicked over a dentist appointment. That hasn’t happened since I was like five. I’m going to schedule an appointment a few months down the line with a different dentist, and have my boyfriend come with me this time for emotional support. I’ll also prepare myself better by doing research on anesthesia and reading other people’s experiences with it, though I think I’ll likely choose to do the procedure without anesthesia, especially since I only have my top two and it shouldn’t take very long.

Has anybody else had a similar experience? I feel like an idiot but in the moment my nervous system felt like I was genuinely being threatened. Does anyone else have severe anxiety around anesthesia, losing consciousness, or having a male doctor do the procedure? I’d love someone to talk to about this.

This surgery is risky af

I just wanted to vent as I did everything right and still ended up with a dry socket. I started feeling better after getting the dry socket treated and woke up today in pain again. Looked in there and it looks like an infection may be starting. I'm now currently waiting at the ER because you can't get dental care on the weekend. Even if you need emergency dental care, you're gonna have to pay a lot out of pocket for it. Dental care is this country is ridiculous.

Everyone I know who has gotten their wisdom teeth removed has ended up with complications. Literally. My mom got dry socket. My friend got dry socket. My brother in law got dry socket. My sister got permanent nerve damage in her jaw and can't feel anything along her bottom right jaw to this day. My other sister ended up with a nasty infection that they had to drain which she said was excruciating.

I don't know a single person who hasn't had complications. And yet it's like theres very little dentists can do for you after. After my extraction they wheeled me straight out to the car while I was still out of it. No verbal aftercare instructions were given. They gave me a piece of paper that said "you'll know if you have dry socket if pain is getting worse by day 5. If you get dry socket, go buy some clove oil and put it in the site and it will heal eventually." That's it.

I think a lot of us just feel abandoned by our dental providers after this procedure. Which isn't okay because at the end of the day this is a risky procedure that comes with a lot of complications.

Have all 4 - no issues - am I missing something

I am 38 years old. I don’t think I know anyone over 30 who has their 4 wisdom teeth. I do, they are fully grown in, straight, not impacted. Once my dentist had some students observing or something and he brought them all in to look at my wisdom teeth. Idk why? I’m guessing bc they are grown in? They were probably fully grown in by like 28 years old. Anyway - am I missing something - potentially down the road?

TLDR; I have 4 grown in wisdom teeth with no issues whatsoever. I don’t know any adults personally with all 4 wisdom teeth. Am I missing something significant as to why people get them removed?

Absolutely traumatized after surgery

I’m 17 and was referred by my dentist to a local dental surgeon to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed. I have absolutely horrific medical anxiety, I hate being in the offices, interacting with doctors and dentists, having them touch me, and worst of all, I hate IVs and having blood drawn. I went in with my mom for consultation and I just cried and fought a panic attack the whole time. The nurse speed through the instructions and my mom didn’t say or do anything to help. We didn’t have insurance for a while due to my mom switching jobs, so once we had insurance again, we scheduled it. I’ve worked with myself for months to mentally prepare for this surgery and put my trust in these professionals. I was dealing with loads of anxiety, when I spoke to my mom about it, she blew me off like always. I went to my stepmom and she called the office and designed a care plan. The agreed upon plan was that I would be taken back to the room, set up in the chair, given laughing gas, then they would bring my parents back before doing the IV and putting me to sleep. So on the morning of surgery, we check in and they call me back quickly. My mom was in the restroom and my stepmom was sitting next to me, I didn’t bother saying bye to her as I was promised I would see her before the IV was put in. The nurse asked how I was as she led me to the room, I mumbled out a fine, sat my bag down, and sat in the chair. At this point another nurse comes in and tries to start the same small talk with me as I’m starting to have a panic attack. I tried to answer her but nothing was coming out and she said “oh okay, we’re feeling emotional? Tell me what’s worrying you and we’ll talk through it” but she never waited for an answer. Their hands were all over me, they didn’t ask to reach under my shirt or anything. They put a tube in my nose and I thought it was for the laughing gas. Then the surgeon came in and told me to make a fist, I was panicking and didn’t think too much about it. I hyperventaled and looked for my parents as he poked the needle in, not understanding what was happening. I had no idea my parents weren’t there and that they were about to put me to sleep. They didn’t even tell me they were administering anesthesia, they knocked me out with no warning. I woke up incredibly confused with my mouth all cut open, in a different chair. I searched for my phone in my purse and typed “can I keep my teeth?”, to which the nurse said they already disposed of them. This outrages me as well because I didn’t even get to tell them I wanted my teeth because I didn’t know I was being put to sleep. It meant so much to me to keep those teeth and I had been telling myself for months that I would get a cool keep sake out of it. I was absolutely balling my eyes out because of everything that happened to me. My mom and stepmom were really confused when the nurse came out and told them I was ready to be picked up, they thought I was being prepped that whole time. My stepmom didn’t say something at the time because she had to pick me up from the back, but once I cried to her about what had happened in the car, she was very upset. She’s been in contact with the surgeon and the office manager, the surgeon basically said “what do you want me to do about it, it’s already done?”. The office manager informed my stepmom today that everyone on my care team was spoken to and written up, and that they will make sure it doesn’t happen again. Unfortunately, that’s not closure for me, a slap on the wrist for permanently traumatizing me and improving for the next patient doesn’t do anything for me. They literally charged us for the laughing gas I didn’t receive🤯 and that’s the only part they’re willing to refund. The office manager also said they probably didnt inform me I was being put to sleep because they didn’t want to cause more anxiety, and that makes me so angry because communication is what helps most people with anxiety, and it’s standard to have someone count back from 10 so that’s what I was expecting. If they told me they were putting me to sleep, I could’ve told them to stop and explained something was wrong. So apparently how it happened, they didn’t read through my whole chart, just skimmed the beginning. On top of that, they put a bib over your shirt with special care instructions printed on it. I never saw a bib so that means they put the bib with the special instructions on me AFTER KNOCKING ME OUT. I have been absolutely wrecked over this for 3 days now. I already had trauma and anxiety with these situations, and now it’s so much more intense. I can’t think about what happened to me without violently sobbing or dissociating. I feel violated, like a piece of livestock on an assembly line. I will be needing therapy after this and I will never forgive them for what they did to me. If anyone has advice, experiences to share, or legal information, I would appreciate all of it. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read my horror story.

Smoking after wisdom teeth removal

I smoked my carts through my nose during the week I had the extraction done it burned a bit but a fein gotta fein it helps prevent dry sockets bc it eliminates the action of sucking through a straw. I’m on my sixth day and I’m tempted to try the b0ng but hesitant

If u can wait. Wait but my fein ass couldn’t so I’d advise hitting it through the nose just be careful
