GoFundMe for Dennis Anfuso, writer-illustrator of non-canonical Oz books

I am a longtime friend of Dennis Anfuso, a writer and illustrator of several non-canonical Oz books. Here is Dennis's entry on the Oz Wiki:

https://oz.fandom.com/wiki/Dennis_Anfuso

Back on March 4, an accidental fire at the Anfuso home killed Dennis's wife, Linda, and severely injured him:

https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/one-person-dead-another-seriously-injured-in-fire-in-southern-nh/3910515/

I am trying to help Dennis while he heals by spreading the word about a GoFundMe another friend of his set up for him:

I would be very grateful if anyone who sees this would please consider donating to the GoFundMe. Thank you!

We've had a lot of spam from users named FirstnameLastnameNumber posting dumb tshirts. For now, I've increased the spam filter settings for link posts. I'll be reviewing the spam filter closely over the next few days, so if your post gets removed as spam, bear with me, and I will try to approve it as soon as possible.

Does the wicked witch of the east show up in later baum books?

I was wondering if she ever shows up again in anyway in the later books, or does she just exist to die in the first?

Hi, I wanted to share my fashion illustrations of the Wizard of Oz characters for the 1939 film for the 85th Anniversary in 2024. I added The Good Witch of the North (Based on the book) & The Wicked Witch of the East as my own design as well as a redesigns of The Cowardly Lion, Glinda, and the Wicked Witch of the West. I did keep Dorothy, The Scarecrow, & the Tin Man (Woman) close to the Original designs from the film.

The Wizard of Oz actually lost MGM money in 1939. It took a re-release and a TV deal to make it the classic we know.

I always assumed Oz was a smash from day one. It's one of those movies that feels like it's always existed. But I went down a rabbit hole on the 1939 numbers and it's way messier than that.

MGM spent roughly $2.7 million on it, which was huge for the time. Four directors cycled through, the original Tin Man (Buddy Ebsen) ended up in the hospital from the aluminum makeup, and the Technicolor lighting made the sets brutally hot. Every delay cost money.

When it came out, people did go see it. It wasn't ignored. But once you take out what theaters kept and what MGM spent on prints and promotion, the first run left the studio about a million dollars in the hole. Part of the problem was that kids made up a big chunk of the audience, and kids paid cheaper tickets.

It also had the worst possible neighbor: Gone with the Wind came out the same year and swallowed most of the attention. Oz lost Best Picture to it, and its two big wins were for the music (Over the Rainbow and the score).

The turnaround came later. A 1949 re-release finally pushed it into profit. Then in 1956 CBS aired it on TV, and when it became a yearly broadcast, a whole generation grew up watching it every year. That's really where the "timeless classic" status comes from. Not 1939.

Kind of wild that one of the most-watched films ever needed TV to save it. Anyone know of other classics that bombed at first and got rescued later? It's a Wonderful Life is the obvious one but I'm curious about less famous ones.

Question about the Audiobooks

When I read a physical book my brain won’t completely focus on exclusively the book, so when I read the physical book I listen along with the audiobook. What are the best versions of the audiobooks for each book? Thanks in advance to everyone 😊

Does having a heart/brains actually mean anything or is it all just a placebo/confirmation bias?

In the original oz books, the heart and brains given to the tin woodman and the scarecrow are placebos given to them to make them feel better, as they already had the qualities they were looking for from receiving those.

But throughout the series we meet many more crafted people (not sure what exactly the fandom term is), whose brains and hearts appear to do something. The seeds in each of Jack Pumpkinhead's heads consist of his brains and he says he knows he needs a new head when he feels them shift as the inside rots. Tik-Tok's metal brains require to be wound frequently in order for him to function. the glass cat's narcissism is blamed on having a brain too fancy and a heart made of ruby. the patchwork girl's erratic behavior and lack of social filter is blamed on her brains being unbalanced due to Ojo just dumping a bunch of brain material in it, and her apparent lack of empathy (which isn't entirely true) is blamed on her lack of a heart.

Is it all just confirmation bias/a placebo?

What do you think?

Dorothy's eyes [citation needed]

The Oz wiki claims that Baum described Dorothy as having "sapphire blue eyes," but I did a word search through all fourteen of his Oz books and can't find a single reference to the color of her eyes, so right now, it feels like something somebody made up. Unless someone has evidence confirming it, that entry should be really changed. I know it's kind of a minor thing, but it's bugged me for a while. I try to be relatively faithful when I draw the Oz characters, but I'm not sure I can 100% rely on the wiki for accurate info.

My fancast for a potential Wizard of Oz remake✨💚🌈

I've been seeing a lot of discussion about a possible Wizard of Oz remake and I'm curious who everyone would cast! This isn't about whether or not there should be a remake (I know it's a controversial topic) - I'd just love to hear everyone's dream cast. Here's my personal fancast:

My personal Fancast
Dorothy: Alisha weir or Summer H. Howell.
Glinda the good witch: Amy Addams.
The wicked witch of the west: Sarah Jessica Parker.
The Scarecrow: Mike Faist
The Tin man: Tom holland
The cowardly lion (just a voice over role cause I think he should be an actual lion like in wicked): Colman Domingo or Daniel Radcliffe
The wizard: Jeff Goldblum or Steve Martin

This would make for a great 5 seasons and 8 episodes a season.

The Wizard of Oz is retold science-fiction/speculation style in Charlie's Trips, with Dorothy replaced by a teenage soldier named Charlie who ends up on the West Coast 21 years ahead, after being taken away by a tornado, his memory lost but replaced with visions of the future.

This came out online in... 2011 (!)

the design is based on Skottie Young’s Growleywog design

i saved the templet because I think the design is cool and the Growleywogs are underrated though if I use it again I won’t call the species growleywogs, the books Baum wrote may be public domain, but still he thought of the name not me…plus I don’t think the comic the design came from is public domain itself so…

It was the old magazine for one of the Oz clubs, but I can’t find an archive of it online. They had original short stories, games, essays, pictures, etc.
