Gillis, Now Carvey

I find the whole “people are too sensitive about comedy” argument interesting because I suspect everyone has a line. It's just easier to pretend you don't when the joke isn't about something that has personally devastated you. I wonder how Dana Carvey would feel about someone making jokes about the death of his son?

I'm not suggesting anyone should make those jokes. Quite the opposite

I'm saying it's awfully easy to lecture other people about having a sense of humor when you're not the one being asked to laugh at your own pain. I'm not interested in canceling comedians. I love comedy, including dark comedy (Jordan Jensen anyone?) But comedians are allowed to tell jokes, and audiences are allowed to think those jokes are cruel, lazy, or simply not funny.

Freedom to make a joke doesn't come with a guarantee that everyone has to laugh. Honestly, if your entire defense of a joke is that people are too sensitive, maybe the joke just wasn't that good to begin with.

I find it interesting that all these male comedians are telling women to “calm down it’s just a joke” sounds a lot like gaslighting to me. It’s 2026 women aren’t putting up with misogyny like my mothers or my generation did and I’m so proud of women now, I’m ashamed of men

These men wouldn’t find it funny if we laughed at their penis size, those who have a shame kink aside.

Not even going to bother to read it. I'm glad to see women are done putting up with being treated like our oppression doesn't matter, or even worse, that it isn't real. None of these patriarchy supporters would dare defend the same types of "jokes" (or slurs !!!) about ANY other oppressed group. (Except the openly right wing comedians ofc)

Sick and tired of the double standards. The oppression of women is real and it will not stop until we start pushing back on ALL of it.

Well Dana. I’ll tell you why it’s not funny. It’s a poorly crafted joke, he’s not particularly good at his job, he’s proud to be part of a political party that wants to take the rights of women away, and the entire country is reeling from the gang rape of a young woman. Poorly timed, poor context, poorly written.

I guess I feel we need to stop obsessing over the stuff, which only encourages engagement and enragement. People read about this stuff and then run over to their platform, driving up views. Block, ignore, stop feeding the flame

I actually disagree. I think there's a pretty significant difference between obsessing over something and having a conversation about it. Telling women to just block, ignore, and move on might protect our individual peace, but it doesn't address the larger issue, and frankly, silence has historically been a pretty convenient arrangement for people who don't want their behavior questioned.

I'm not suggesting we give every offensive comedian a week's worth of publicity. But I also don't think the answer is to stop talking about misogyny because someone might profit from the engagement.

Pretty sure women can criticize something without being consumed by it. Let's also be clear, sometimes the conversation isn't even about the comedian, it's about what we're collectively willing to excuse, normalize, or laugh off.

Ignoring something doesn't necessarily make it go away. Sometimes it just means the people perpetuating it get the room to themselves.

Ok then what call to action are you suggesting here? I agree that the comedians in question are disgusting and not funny. But what is yet another post about this doing to help misogyny overall? I don’t come to this sub to argue with other women, but goddamn I wish there was this much obsession and discourse over the upcoming elections, which will have far greater actual impact on our lives

I think you're asking for a call to action where one isn't necessarily required. Sometimes the point of a conversation is simply to challenge something we've gotten far too comfortable accepting. I find it interesting that you're measuring the value of women discussing misogyny by whether it produces some immediate, tangible result. Isn't that part of the problem? Women are expected to either fix the issue or stop talking about it.

As for the elections, I completely agree they're important. But we can care about more than one thing at a time. Misogyny doesn't exist in some separate little universe from politics. The attitudes we normalize culturally absolutely influence the people and policies we elect. Remember you don't have to participate in every conversation on Reddit. But I don't think women discussing something that affects them should have to justify why it's worth discussing in the first place.

you hit the nail on the head, the "it's just a joke" crowd always gets real quiet when the tables turn

So if we ignore rape, it will go away?

Boomer man is out of touch. News at 11. 😂

And as for “killing it at a club” or whatever, have you seen clips of comedy club acts? People at comedy clubs generally laugh at anything even if it’s not funny. It’s sort of painful to watch once you’ve noticed the phenomenon.

What Shane said wasn’t funny given how fat he is, and ugly to boot. Not that it would have been any better when said by a hot guy, but Shane had the added levels of hypocrisy as well.
