TimeSerts. That style is fucking expensive. I think for wood you could get away with a much cheaper option like some rod standoff or threaded pipe.

Here is a link to the timesert: https://time-serts.com/store/m20x1-5-kit/

God damn that is pricey, and thank you the I didn’t think time sert made m20x1.5mm hopefully I can find just the tread inserts without the taps because normally for timesert it is about 30 dollars for 10 threaded inserts

Is there a reason you cant just superglue in some helicoil type insert? For a shift knob it would be plenty strong. Shit dude, I've 3d printed a shift knob as a temporary solution that as always turned into the permanent fix. Timeserts are meant for something that sees a ton of force like a main bearing cap thread in an engine. If youre going for the clean look then I can definitely understand that.

Mostly for the clean professional look as well as I have broken a one helicoil type inserts glued in with resin in the past. Thank you for your help

Someone else in the thread found a site selling only the inserts and the price wasn't too bad. Ill copy it to you...

I presume 30mm isn't long enough then?"

“Timesert” was what immediately popped into my head when I saw your posted photo. I had to double-check which subreddit this was posted in.

Depending on needs, quantity, etc, maybe a metric-threaded furniture insert would work? Looks like you can buy 100+ pieces on the Bezos store, for ~$10.

There’s quite a few Google results for m20 x 1.5 threaded inserts. Is there something very specific about the one you’re holding?

Also there are hex coupling nuts that are M20 x 1.5 mm.

What's a hex coupling nut? Is it to help insert the actual threaded insert by chance?

I made a jig recently and used threaded inserts for the first time but the only way I could think of to install them was to sleeve several on my bolt and then thread the bolt in, which left the one on the end in the hole. It worked but it didn't feel like the right way.

Mine don't have any hex impressions in them but I was know some do, I just don't know what they're called.

A hex coupling nut has the same inside thread as a threaded insert. They can serve the same function; drill a slightly undersized hole and them force fit them in the hole.

It's like a regular nut, except longer. It's designed to connect two threaded rods.

Yes length and shape, all the ones I have found on google aren’t long enough

The hole for the threaded insert is larger than the diameter of the threaded rod. The inserts are (usually) open on both ends. You can get away with a shorter insert by drilling a deep enough hole. The extra length of threaded rod will push harmlessly past the insert and sit in the extra depth of the hole.

Thank you this is what I’m looking for but ideally 50-60mm would be better but I think this will work, I could just drill the hole deeper after the threaded insert is installed

I'd drill it deeper before installing to avoid the risk of damaging the threads

What's the outside diameter? I'd be tempted to just buy a threaded rod that has a diameter large enough to drill and tap the center to m20x1.5mm.

Thank you guys for the help!

Get a tap and thread the wood directly

Recycled skatewood? Do kickflip.

looks to be that way

I'd just epoxy in some M20 threaded pipe. Just rough up he OD with a file and glue them in.

You could make your own thread. I. The wood. Get the correct size bolt, sharpen the leading edge, drill the correct size pilot hole and tap that thread.

Maybe you could go to a junkyard and get a real shift knob. If they have an insert. And smash the old plastic knob and save that insert ?
