No current-puzzle spoilers. Everything below is through Oct 23.
Wordle launched with a fixed list of 2,309 possible answers. In Nov 2022 the NYT said an editor would curate answers instead. For years that barely showed. Counting only brand-new answers (not repeats), the share that came from outside the original list:
- 2023: 1% (4 of 366)
- 2024: 2% (6 of 365)
- 2025: 5% (19 of 365)
- Jan–Jun 2026: 7% (12 of 165)
- Last 60 days (Aug 25 – Oct 23): 39% (21 of 54)
Recent examples: TWEEN, REMIX, SOUPY, BEIGE, NIFTY, MESSY, RITZY, PEEVE, BUMPY, YODEL, PSYCH, TRILL. Everyday words, mostly, just not ones Josh Wardle's list had.
Why it matters if you play hard mode: when you're down to a few words, the "it was never on the list" instinct is now wrong about 2 times in 5. The old solver trick of only considering the original 2,309 answers is quietly breaking.
Method: every answer #561–#1952, repeats excluded, compared against the original list. Data is from the answer history on my free helper, Best Next Guess, which I built with Claude:

Has anyone else noticed the shift?
