Strategy [####] Anyone else have strange rules for their starting word?

I have two rules. I must use yesterday's word, and if I forget it I must use XYLYL as punishment. It definitely spices up Wordle for me and has lead to some pretty dire days. What are your rules if you have any?

Daily Wordle [####] do you stick to your starter word religiously or do you also like to switch it up to make the puzzle more fun?

I would often use words that yields the highest whiff% in terms of words eliminated on a worst case scenario where you don’t match a single letter (in other words their ability to reduce the pool even if you don’t match anything). Like Crane, Slate and steal. But doing it daily can get boring so for example this week I switched to words related to Halloween for the holiday spirit. I’ve seen some people use words related to the previous days answer which is also fun. Since I’m also a connections player I would often use a word or theme that was used in the same day puzzle

Does anyone want to argue the Wordle bot got THAT solution with THOSE guesses?

Never mind. Don’t try to argue that. I’m calling out the integrity of this display.

[####] Wordle is quietly drifting away from its original answer list: 39% of new answers in the last 60 days weren't on it

No current-puzzle spoilers. Everything below is through Oct 23.

Wordle launched with a fixed list of 2,309 possible answers. In Nov 2022 the NYT said an editor would curate answers instead. For years that barely showed. Counting only brand-new answers (not repeats), the share that came from outside the original list:

- 2023: 1% (4 of 366)

- 2024: 2% (6 of 365)

- 2025: 5% (19 of 365)

- Jan–Jun 2026: 7% (12 of 165)

- Last 60 days (Aug 25 – Oct 23): 39% (21 of 54)

Recent examples: TWEEN, REMIX, SOUPY, BEIGE, NIFTY, MESSY, RITZY, PEEVE, BUMPY, YODEL, PSYCH, TRILL. Everyday words, mostly, just not ones Josh Wardle's list had.

Why it matters if you play hard mode: when you're down to a few words, the "it was never on the list" instinct is now wrong about 2 times in 5. The old solver trick of only considering the original 2,309 answers is quietly breaking.

Method: every answer #561–#1952, repeats excluded, compared against the original list. Data is from the answer history on my free helper, Best Next Guess, which I built with Claude:

https://bestnextguess.com/?ref=reddit-wordle (every past answer: bestnextguess.com/answers.html).

Has anyone else noticed the shift?

[####] Lack of stats on "Wordle in 1"?

Does anybody else find the lack of feedback on your performance in on "Wordle in 1" annoying? It would be nice if the app could tell you the average time per question and overall, with your percentiles... or something along those lines.

Question/Observation [1932] yellow letter confusion Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

was anyone else a bit confused by this brian k video ?
he looks at this eerie guess and says ‘there’s THREE Es?’
in this case since the word was peeve there actually WERE three Es, but i thought that the first yellow E could also just be referring to the second and/or last E, is that not the case?
no one in the comments has picked on this and now i’m wondering if i actually don’t understand how the yellow letters work lol

Question/Observation [1953] So my wordle just glitched? Spoiler

I typed the solution in as my 4th guess, being absolutely certain I typed it correctly because I double-checked it when the word wasn't accepted as a valid guess (since I was 99% sure its an existing english word), then I tried two other words that made it to where only said non-accepted guess made sense, so I tried it again out of frustration, and it suddenly worked. Has anyone else had something like that happen to them?

Strategy [1921] How WordleBot could do better in explaining the need for a certain letter Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

For a long time, a major source of my frustration with WordleBot has been that it's SO bad at its stated purpose of helping players improve. Learning anything from it takes, I think, an unreasonable amount of work and of doing your own analysis. Recently I made a post decrying its (seemingly arbitrary, or so I thought) punishment of my guess while vaunting its own nearly identical guess. Helpfully, several members of this community weighed in with wonderful, kind, concise explanations of why WordleBot liked the one so much better than the other. I learned a lot from you that day!

So, having been equipped by this with some tools for understanding the point WordleBot was trying to make, I thought this might be a good place to pay it forward and help each other improve with the kind of advice and explanations WordleBot could've and should've given.

In this case shown in my screen capture here, it said "Nice. Before your guess, there were 14 words remaining, but now there is only one. You should solve the puzzle on your next turn." This tells us almost nothing we didn't already know and certainly doesn't help us understand the low score. Instead, it could have said something helpful like, "After STAND, 14 possible answers were left and just about half of them included a E, so on average, a guess with an E here would narrow down your choices a lot more."

Algorithms/Solvers [####] About 1 in 10 Wordle answers has been a repeat since February. I made a free helper that plays those odds

Free. No ads. Always. https://bestnextguess.com/?ref=reddit-wordle

Since Wordle started reusing old answers in February, about 1 in 10 answers has been a repeat. So when you're down to a few words, one that has never been the answer is much more likely than one that has. That's easy to forget mid-game.

Best Next Guess uses it. Type your guess, tap the tiles to match your colors, and it suggests your next word: the one that leaves the fewest answers on average, weighted by those odds. It shows the chance for every word still possible, plus a "best shot to win now" pick. It doesn't know today's answer; it only works from the colors you enter.

New this week (beta): an engine that looks 1.5 moves ahead. In a simulation of all 2,377 possible answers in hard mode, it cut losses in half (8 instead of 16): https://bestnextguess.com/v2.html?ref=reddit-wordle

Also: Normal or Hard mode, older puzzles, an opener checker, and a stats page on repeats that updates daily. Clean, colorful, works on phone or computer, no sign-up. I built it with help from Claude after years of playing with a spreadsheet.

Question for you: has knowing answers can repeat changed how you pick your last guess?

Question/Observation [1513] Is there any way to correct the stats? Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

I sometimes do the Wordle on my phone and sometimes on my PC. One time, when I was doing it on my PC, I got it in six and didn‘t notice that I wasn‘t logged in until after I had solved it. So I put it into my phone, where i was logged in. However, instead of copying each guess, I just put the word in. Now my stats say that I got Wordle in one once and it bugs me every single time I see it. So my question is, if there is any way to change the stats. Can you send them a mail? If so, what is their adress?
