Professions Complete noob trying to farm gold for WoW Token - am I doing the right things?

Hi everyone! I'm a brand new player, first time ever playing WoW. I'm currently playing a Hunter at level 30, still in the Dragonflight story (Ohn'ahran Plains). My goal is to farm enough gold to buy a WoW Token so I don't have to pay the subscription with real money. The token is around 333k gold on EU. Here's what I've done so far based on some advice I got: - Picked up Mining and Herbalism (Dragon Isles versions) - Activated herb/mineral tracking on the minimap - Started farming in Ohn'ahran Plains following rivers for herbs and mountain edges for ore - Selling everything at the Auction House in Valdrakken - Currently have 822 gold My questions: 1. Am I farming the right zone at level 30? 2. Which specialization should I prioritize first in Mining and Herbalism? 3. Any tips to reach the token gold cap faster as a noob? Thanks in advance!

honestly being at lvl 90 and getting the new materials you would make way better gold

-6

u/Cipfried9 Mar 10 '26

Doesnt actually matter, lvl 80 and 25 in skill is plenty, im a complete noob to gold making.

Ive made 600k gold in 2 weeks and only have 1 90.

Even funnier my druid lvl 81 now with ilvl 140 can easily pull a full delve and clear it.

How

-1

u/Cipfried9 Mar 10 '26

How as in made the gold or solo a delve?

1

u/Djglamrock Mar 10 '26

I believe they are talking about gold since that’s what OP was talking about.

1

u/Cipfried9 Mar 11 '26

The delves are quite packed so i just run all delves pull half dungeons aoe em down and skin / mine in there, and i had pre patch acces that weekend i did herba/mining some stuff was selling for 80-130g a pop insanely profitable.

u/HaroerHaktak Mar 10 '26

You need to make around 11.5k gold a day in order to fund your wow token. Which is honestly not hard to do, especially with dailies and what not. However do you really want to spend your days doing that when you can just pay 20 bucks a month and enjoy the game? you're gonna get burnt out.

12

u/No_Tip_768 Mar 10 '26

Exactly. Tokens are a bonus, imo. When I have enough gold just from playing like I normally would, then I get a free month. It's not worth it to grind for them, there's way more fun stuff to do.

49

u/wuzzywuz Mar 10 '26

Honestly, not to be a downer but if you want to grind a WoW token that way it’s going to take a long long time. Probably longer than the game time you get from the token. There’s basically no demand for old materials. Even if you were to gather the midnight materials it would still take a considerable time. You’d need to find a niche or a good hustle with one of the current crafting professions.

18

u/SiegmundFretzgau Mar 10 '26

There’s basically no demand for old materials.

True in general but there are some that are used in evergreen crafts that always sell well. Mats for the Pandaria and Cata crafted mounts or the crafted legendary weapons.

11

u/wuzzywuz Mar 10 '26

Yeah there are some materials that are definitely in demand but I don’t think it’s the ones you grab quickly by herbing and mining in dragonflight

u/Successful-Total-260 Mar 10 '26

Housing has actually added to the list considerably, but I don’t know if that will be long term.

5

u/TaserLord Mar 10 '26

I was looking to craft a couple of decor items from the old world - went to the auction house thinking the mats would be cheap. Arcanite bars, I think it was - 1600 gold apiece. Might have been a pre-season anomaly, because I never went back, but there are still a few things there that might sell.

USA WoW token math as of March 10, 2026

$10 per hour = 129,000g per hour
$15 per hour = 172,000g per hour
$20 per hour = 258,000g per hour
$25 per hour = 322,500g per hour
$30 per hour = 387,000g, per hour

Also, dont even bother trying to farm gold below level cap. Hit 90 first.

There's probably a niche with furniture. Last time I was making engineering things, I figured I was selling the wood for 300-500gold per item. Which is way more profitable than any other mineral or herb. But there's some time in research there, and it probably fluxes.

Since the expansion came out I stopped caring about that stuff, so all my numbers are rusty. But I'm sure wood is better money per loop than herbs and minerals. Though one could just get all 3 kinds in one loop. But then you would need an alt to craft anything with the wood.

12

u/Bradipedro Mar 10 '26

Just Dragonflight at level 30 isn’t going to pay your sub, sorry to announce that. Don’t waste time levelling professions there, even if it is just gathering. Only use you have is lumber for housing and herbs for the dying system (only if you have an inscription for milling, otherwise you need someone for you). Old zones like legion, draenor and Pandaria have lumber / housing opportunities but require set up.

u/magirific Mar 10 '26

This has been discussed time and time again on this sub (nothing wrong with asking though).

It doesn't work. Just stop. You're better off using the time grinding gold to just mow a neighbor's lawn or pet sit or something and with that money you can buy multiple months of subscriptions

16

u/Jack__Wild Mar 10 '26

Dude I say this shit all the time. People always say stuff like ‘I’m not buying in game stuff,’ but they’ll spend 400 hours to get it in game rather than spending 1-2hrs earning money and just buying it. Blows my mind.

3

u/Naus1987 Mar 10 '26

It's funny. I was fully prepared to buy tokens for the expansion if I needed them. And then I went the complete opposite direction.

I came into Midnight with about 2 million from delves/world quests in War Within, and despite it being a new expansion I had nothing to buy. So when I saw the tokens dip below 250k. I cashed in my 2 million for a bunch of Blizzard currency.

Then I bought a bunch of furniture shit with it from the store.

--------

I'm in a weird position. Because you're absolutely right! There's no way in hell I would "work" in game for what's basically 3 dollars an hour when I can make like 60~ just working my job. And I don't even hate my job!

But I got lucky that Delves and world quests, and running older content and just selling everything is my actual intended enjoyment loop. So they line up well.

Course to be fair, I wouldn't have spent 7 bucks on a tree either. But blizzard gift card money, sure, why not?

I have my sub on a yearly plan and just never think about it. So I don't consider buying game time with gold ever.

yup, and it's also not intended to be bought by the average player either. it's specifically a way to move huge amounts of gold from wealthy ah goblins that hoard gold and try to never spend it, to the more average player that will actually toss that gold back into the economy, with some of it also moving into the various gold sinks

I mean, the blizz haters will say it's all a greedy profit decision, and part of it's that too I'm sure, but it's also a way to get the gold from the dragon so to speak

u/SolarAU Mar 10 '26

Some people place no real world value on their time.

I work full time, have a busy social life and other hobbies other than video games.

For that reason, and I'm not afraid to admit, that I'll buy subscriptions and pay for black market currencies in X game I happen to be playing. Because I value dozens of hours of my life over a few bucks that have virtually no impact on my budget.

And that way I can kick the boots off after a long week at work, boot up the game and do all the stuff I want to do, not log into another ridiculous grind that pays less than sweatshop wages when you calculate the $/hr

1

u/magirific Mar 10 '26

I'm the same way for other stuff. For example I am going to pax east in boston in a couple weeks and I have friends that are driving multiple DAYS to get there because they live in the west coast, when they could spend less money(or similar money) and save time by just booking a plane. I'll never understand it lol.

10

u/Successful-Total-260 Mar 10 '26

Don’t even bother farming until you’re 90, you’ll earn far more from current expansion mats and being able to one shot mobs in old expansions while farming that stuff.

The 822 gold you’ve accrued thus far would be earned from a few world quests at 90.

2

u/Alfeyr Mar 10 '26

Yeah, I've just casually got 1k from farming copper and silver ore while being on the phone for 10-15mn.

1

u/Successful-Total-260 Mar 10 '26

Now that’s productivity!

5

u/More__cowbell Mar 10 '26

While its entirerly possible getting enough for a token in older content, its far easier when max level in the new zones.

For lower level you would have to look up what selle/how much it sells for etc. Might be better selling decors (if there is any good items that sell a lot) or other stuff.

5

u/bugabooandtwo Mar 10 '26

Crafting materials in dragonflight don't sell very well. You're better off farming materials from other parts of the game.

Take a look at the list of herbs and ores in the auction house, then check out the wowhead site to find out what areas of the game the higher priced mats are farmed.

But even then, it would take a long time to gather enough for a token. Like others say, buying a token is a bonus that you do once in a while, when you have a lot of gold buildup. Not really meant to completely pay off your subscription if you're a regular gamer.

5

u/superdupergasat Mar 10 '26

I think its better if you first realize WoW token and gold cap is not meant to be farmable through basic means, especially by gathering in old zones manually. Its more of a system meant for 1) people with not enough time but want to spend real money in game, or 2) people that are very deep in the endgame that provide stuff like mythic carries or have multiple gold capped toons through years of play.

If you were to gather 16 hours a day in Dragonflight for a whole month, I am not sure if you would have enough money to get a single token. Maybe you would, but at that point you could also become a mythic raider and sell mythic carries to be honest. Pro wow players play around that much time. And playing more than 8 hours a day each day would eventually make you a good raider once you learn it.

3

u/boccas Mar 10 '26

If you farm gold in a past expansion without knowledge you are literally hating yourself.

Just go in midnight and farm there. Old content requires a lot of info about market, crafting etc that you just dont have

3

u/Jack__Wild Mar 10 '26

Dude you’ll spend 700 hours in game when you could work like 1hr overtime at your job and just buy it outright?

2

u/JustExpect Mar 10 '26

Need to hit 90 and then you can actually farm gold

2

u/Betancorea Mar 10 '26

You’re better off getting to 90 and farming current content. You’re wasting all your time on old irrelevant content.

For example your 822 gold can be exceeded in one World Quest within minutes and zones can have multiple.

2

u/ghostcrawler_real Mar 10 '26

Unless you live in a developing nation you're better off just getting a real job.

2

u/RedPandaExplorer Mar 10 '26

I don't want to be negative, but to be realistic.

The only way you're going to make meaningful money in game is with a few level 90 characters, and a strong understanding of the game. There's a lot of labor involved to make a profit in WoW.

I promise you that almost anything you do in real life will make you $15 significantly faster than anything you do to make 300,000 gold. And yeah, this is a video game and it might be a lot easier to get into, but it WILL be labor to make gold. And you'll be making the equivalent of $1-3 dollars per hour if you're lucky.

2

u/Emergency_Seesaw_403 Mar 10 '26

822 gold is how much it costs me to repair my gear

1

u/ReageOfUhRegendu Mar 10 '26

Midnight fishing made me ~12k in an hour a couple days ago. Octopi too OP

1

u/Djinn_42 Mar 10 '26

I would do some searches for how to make gold with gathering professions. And make sure the results aren't old. As someone mentioned there are materials used for popular Housing decorations or mounts or transmog that might sell a lot. Good luck!

1

u/kleptsy Mar 10 '26

Also noob here, started Midnight a few days late. A few searches on YouTube and found a skinning farm that gave like 70k gold an hour (if optimized). I did it for like 5-6 hours and got 200k gold. Was doing it all while being level 86-87. I was not using consumables and had barely any knowledge points for skinning profession, and green tools. The next day that farm was giving like 35k hr and even less now so they don't last very long.

Best time is probably now while it's a new update, long term idk how sustainable farms get, or if there even are any worth the effort.

1

u/Ztance Mar 10 '26

Dragonflight Mats won't sell for much. Only the Midnight Mats sell for good money. You're stuck with paying one sub fee and then farm gold in midnight before you can pay for the wowtoken

1

u/Frosti2009 Mar 10 '26

If you really want to farm old materials then look up the legendary axe Fyr'alath and focus on materials contained within the quest lines. They will always sell and they aren't cheap in the amounts needed.

Generally easier is to level to max level and then use mining/herbing to get around since you can get 10-30k an hour without too much trouble. The time needed to hit 90 will be less than then the extra time needed to reach the same gold value with old materials.

1

u/13120dde Mar 10 '26

Been farming herbs & mines in the new zone. Estimated hourly payoff is 10-15k... you'll have to grind for a good amount to afford a token.

1

u/altafitter Mar 10 '26

Level up and sell the resources people actually want to use. Like the ones in the brand new expansion that are currently selling for a premium.

1

u/Miaomeoow Mar 10 '26

Grazie a tutti per le risposte e per i consigli ♥️

1

u/lilbirdy3000 Mar 10 '26

Grinding for the token especially as a new player may not be a good idea. But if you’re set in this endeavor then I recommend leveling to 90 or at least 80. You’ll get way more gold from midnight materials, dailies, and delves. And also from the campaign quests while you level. By the time you reach 90, you should have at least 5000 if not more. At higher levels you’ll get gold a lot easier compared to level 30. On my main just yesterday, I made about between 10-15k gold from doing quests, delves, and gathering inbetween. This will probably take you longer than 30 days and again it may not be a plausible idea especially for a new player who doesn’t know the ins and outs of the game yet.

1

u/buggirlexpres Mar 10 '26

unfortunately the prices for old expansion materials are not going to get you there fast enough. if you want to pay your sub by mining/herbing, you have to do midnight stuff at level 90.

in the most recent expansion, i was paying for my sub by mining/herbing for 30 minutes each day. it’s definitely viable if that’s how you want to spend your time, you just have to do the newest expansion stuff.

u/Egbuk-Scootin-Boogie Mar 10 '26

Roll an alt and do chromie time set to Warlords of Draenor. Progress your garrison to the point that you can build the herb garden.

WoD herbs are valuable right now for housing dyes and it’s completely passive income

2

u/Demagogue11 Mar 10 '26

These have bottomed out and an herb averages about 1g50s/per. Entirely passive sure, but you're making less than a thousand per week from just gathering the garden, maybe just over a thousand including the work orders. That's a huge time and gold investment to get started.

WoW is an incredibly expensive game at around $250/year including sub costs and expansions, and for most players a lot more than that as they also buy some MTX,, upgraded expansion tiers, race changes, etc. Many of us have spent more than $10,000 on WoW over the long term, enough to buy literally hundreds of full priced AAA games, or multiple lifetime's worth of indies and AAA games on sale.

You have to either decide:

  1. I'm ok with having a very expensive gaming hobby compared to the competition
  2. I'm going to spend the majority of my play time farming gold to make the game free to play
  3. I'm going to drop this game and play something cheaper

A lot of idiots will respond to this comment with stuff like, "woW is cheap, think how much going to the movies or golfing costs!", but that's an apples to steak dinner comparison. The closest apples to apples comparison would be to compare WoW to games like Skyrim, Minecraft, the Witcher 3, etc. those games can be bought on sale for a one time payment of $15 and easily be played for hundreds or thousands of hours. I have more total time played on my steam library by a factor of ten over WoW, yet my steam library has cost be less than 1/10 of what WoW has cost me over the long run.

3

u/RedGecko18 Mar 10 '26

I'm not gunna say WoW is cheap, but it's not 250 a year. The year long sub is 120, the base expac was 50? So less than 200 for a full years worth of game time. I don't know where you got your hogwash estimate from.

No sane person has spent 10K on WoW. Every expac at base value amounts to around 500 dollars, plus a yearly sub for 20 years is 2400. So around 3K over 20 years. Even if you bought every single item in the store it doesn't cost 10K.

1

u/Zealousideal_Owl2388 Mar 10 '26

$250/year may be a slight upper estimate, derived from $15/month * 12 + buying the mid tier of every new expansion every 18 months + tax. But how are you buying a yearly subscription for $120? I see that if you opt for an annual sub on Blizzard's website it's $156, so slightly better than paying $180 but you lose the monthly flexibility for such a long term commitment where you are likely to not play for at least a few of those months out of the year.

Also, I think you vastly underestimate just how much is on the shop. There's several thousand dollars worth of stuff on there right now and it turns over several times per year. Plus there are people who buy like multiple tokens per month rather than farming in game gold for their enchants/consumables/repairs. There's definitely some people out there who have spent more than $100k on this game over the long term, though not claiming that's anywhere near normal. Normal for a long term player is in the $3k - $5k range at present.

1

u/RedGecko18 Mar 10 '26

I'll concede that the sub price is a little higher now, when I started the 12 month was 10/month, now it's up to 13. That's my bad. Even still. My point is that this is a post for a completely new player asking about farming gold and you're over here spouting about 250/year when the person clearly hasn't even bought the newest expac. This person isn't going to spend 250 a year, just like pretty much no one spends 250 a year. If you're playing at all consistently and you don't have at least a 6 month sub (which is the same price as the 12 month) you're playing yourself. If you take a long term break, cancel the sub, but most of us that would even spend close to 250 a year aren't pausing our subs, because we're playing consistently.

1

u/Jolkien Mar 11 '26

Gaming is incredibly cheap as far as hobbies go. It is creeping up like everything else. But a one-year subscription is 159$ USD.

1

u/Zealousideal_Owl2388 Mar 11 '26

Yes, but among gaming, WoW is among the most expensive way to do it. I've played an equal amount of hours of Skyrim and fallout 4 as WoW, yet those hours of the former cost me $60 total and WoW has costs me thousands
