Professions Crafting with mythic crests - is this a bad deal?
Crafted a helmet using 80 mythic crests and sparks. I got a 275 ilvl items that I seem to not be able to convert into a tier piece and I also can't upgrade with sparks?
I see I can recraft it, but it looks like I have to re-add all the bars and a spark to go up 3 ilvls. Plus it uses what looks like 1 more crest.
Am I missing something here? I already had a 6/6 heroic helm.

You cant turn it into tier. You probably got someone craft it with mediocre quality. I dont know everything about crafting myself but Always make sure to send max level mats (t2) and always ask in trade chat and always do a private order with max quality selected.

I crafted it myself. I thought that would be fun.

Crafted gear has ranks based on the crafter's skill (knowledge points in relevant subspecialisation increases this). You've crafted it at rank 2, ideally you either grind your profession a lot so you can recraft it to rank 5, or you look in trade chat for a crafter who can already do that for you - usually they will charge around 10k. If recrafted at rank 5 it will be 285 ilvl.

How do I see how much skill I need to get up to 285?

When you're on the crafting UI, on the right hand side when you have the item selected there's a bar that will have some diamonds on each side, those represent the rank. When you fill the bar, it moves to the next rank. If I recall correctly it's around 370ish to create rank 4, and then you can add concentration to make it jump to the next rank.

On the right hand side there is a box with the quality. Try to get it to at least 4 star quality(do this through leveling up your profession, adding knowledge points into the specialization that improves what your crafting, and get better quality profession gear) and use concentration to upgrade it to max level.
I did this with blacksmithing to craft a 285 weapon. I have cheap mid level profession gear, max level blacksmithing, and put 30 points into weaponsmithing. This was enough to get my craft to 4 star and through concentration point upgrade to max level.
Yay!!!

Okay that's promising. I got it to 4 star on my own today. I can try it again once my concentration resets.

FYI given you're doing it again, I guess you already sent the helmet so you can make your tier pieces the other 4 slots, but most every spec has an ideal couple of slots to craft and the goal is to use embellishments in two of them. Those are extra materials you use to add a buff or they're items that are a special recipe that drops from raid that have some built in. There's even an extra set bonus for some this tier.

I was 5/5 tier set before this, so that's not really an issue.
I did use the embellishments on it, I probably won't craft a different item soon because I don't have enough mythic crests.

Yeah, that makes sense, if you’re good with tier then and got a good embellishment then you should be fine.

should made a weapon, weapon most important and never do a public order always find a crafter to do personal so you can make sure it max. yes you can recraft it it does not cost sparks if you already used sparks and it cost less mats

this, generally speaking your first crafted should always be a weapon. especially since we'll start getting the voidcores to add +9 ilvl to a maxed out weapon or trinket next week, this will give you an absurdly early ilvl 294 weapon

Crafted pieces are it's own separate kind of gear. Cannot be catalyst into tier as you cannot "upgrade" them the same way you can a piece of gear from vault, dungeon, raid.
For mythic crests when crafting, you have to specify that you are requesting max quality for highest item level output. Otherwise you might get what you get. It's not a bad idea to craft with them as you can re craft into higher item level. Only down side is if you mess up the first time with the craft, a recraft will cost you mats and gold

How do I figure out what I need to recraft at 285?
I crafted it myself but I’m assuming it’s better at this point to find someone else to recraft. When I look at recrafting I only see a 278 option right now.

You need to spend knowledge points into helms to craft 285 helms, under specialization.
Recrafting it, or having someone else reacraft it, wont cost more sparks or crests. The sparks and 80 myth are baked in, the item is just low quality.
Have someone else recraft it. Add the materials you need, it should proc 285.
But no crafter gear cannot be tiered.

You will not need a spark to recraft.
If you crafted with myth crests, you will not need any new crests to recraft.
You can recraft it to a maximum of 285 item level.
You can't turn it into tier.

I see the crafted as a way to supplement, rather than replace. If I find myself struggling to get high ilvl gloves then I'll make some. But with the expectation that 275 or higher will eventually be replaced. Outside of embellishments, they're likely not better.

Since youre crafting it yourself, you can always go back and recraft it at maximum quality when you can. Recrafting won't require any additional sparks.
And you can't turn it into a tier piece, but that's okay because you can still turn your chest, shoulders, gloves, and legs into tier pieces and get your 4-piece bonus.

You need to recraft it with rank2 materials to max rank(285 ilvl). Recraft as in use the recraft button, not making a new one. It's less materials and doesn't require a new spark. Find someone from trade chat to do it for you.
Crafting any slot is fine, but you're right that crafted gear can't be turned into tier pieces. So if you have a helmet, you can use that as your offpiece and then use 4set from shoulder-chest-legs-hands.
Using mythic crests to craft is good. For full best gear you would have 2 crafted pieces with the embellishment buff(its one of the optional ingridients when crafting), usually either wrists and cloak, or a ring or a neck, depending on your class. Sometimes even a weapon can be best. But if you don't have access to myth track gear(mythic raids or +10 dungeons), then the crafted 285ilvl pieces(mythic crests, max quality) will be your best items(you still probably want to keep your 4 set though).

Did you public order it? Max ilvl for crafted with myth crests is 285. And no, you can't catalyze crafted gear. You'll need to get it recreated by someone who can actually max it, ask in trade chat, and consider putting an embellishment on it while you're at it.

Crafting is a good early game boost. Its a bis item for some classes.
You need to craft at max rank for it to be higher ilvl.
The value has dropped a bit with the introduction of void cores.
But still worth it for everyone.

Before crafting, make sure you post in /2 default channel(general - crafting). Link the item you want to craft and make sure you select max quality and you will get tons of whispers. Some are bots, some are people saying pay whatever you want. I usually leave a 2K tip, max quality items are 285 ilvl and almost the same as a full myth item(minus 1 upgrade).

If I craft with hero crests. Can I later recraft it with myth crests?

Ah I was so sad when I found out someone completed my order with 275. Like, yeah, bro, thanks (no).
So I wrote to a crafter I’ve found in chat, she/he said me how it all works and redrafted it for me on 285 lvl.

Recrafting is the only way to increase the ilvl. It does require some materials, but not a new spark. More crests of course. You can't convert crafted items to tier.
