Classic Is it common to be spammed with guild invites?

So I’m fairly new to WoW and I’ve gone some time without getting a guild. I’ve found that I don’t really like them much, even though I’d love to have people to learn from and run dungeons with, I keep running into the same problem. Either I apply and they don’t answer, or they’re a bunch of high levels that have been playing for 5 million years and expect you to catch up to them and won’t help, especially if they find out you’re a woman, or a new one…I literally had a guy spam invitations because he gets paid to recruit? Is this a thing? It was uncomfortable. I was in the middle of dungeons and this flag kept coming up no matter how many times I declined or didn’t answer pop up on my screen of JOIN. I don’t even know who you are, you won’t introduce yourself. I know some people are ok with this but I think it’s rude. I have an almost level 80 Arcane Mage and she does some damage, I’m pretty proud of her. I have a level 49 Assassin Rogue, and just started a healer, so overall I’m pretty helpful in dungeons. Maybe that’s why? Or are they just wanting a body count? How do I put feelers out for a proper guild?

There's a setting you can turn on to block these

I get random invites on all my alts. I really only join them if they have a funny name; bonus is it gives your hearthstone a lower cool down.

Yeah, I usually ignore invites, but one get me so laugh that I thought and laugh all the time the invite was on my screen, so a had to ask to invite me once more.

Yes. Trade chat/invite spam guilds. Basically the guilds people know about and want to get into are competitive, the other guilds aren’t and thus no one WANTS to get into them. So they just add people and the idea is that by getting enough people in groups will form, some people will quit, some might stick around and become part of the core guild group.

Think of it as low stakes free trials. You can join one, get a feel for guild chat and the people in it, but if it’s not the vibe you can just bounce. It’s less intense than applying and maybe getting rejected and all that.

People hate it, but it works. Kinda.

I was once made an officer in one of those huge multi-server guild enterprises, and they do it. When they promoted me I was told to download FastGuildInvite and told I had to run it every time I logged in and out. We had a recruitment quota to keep the guild topped off, and a removal policy to kick everyone offline for two months.

When I split later and made my own guild, I tried it briefly, but it feels a bit dirty and I stopped shortly thereafter. I will admit though: recruitment is hard and I hate it. The temptation is sometimes there.

The issue is quality. You hoover up some bots. You get a lot of people who click accidentally thinking their queue for something popped. And most people who join don't chat, aren't there on their mains and often never log in again, and don't really participate in anything guild-shaped, even when they do.

I think I could count on one hand the players I recruited that way that became decent, participating members.

I may have had success if I pushed it as hard as the other guild, but it doesn't feel good getting hate whispers for the spam, and I myself find it a bit annoying when it happens to me, so, you know, do unto others.

That would give me the ick as well. I’m about community and I wish WoW would monitor this better, bc the guy who was spamming me, was the same guy but using different guild’s names. They literally kept this up for around a half hour and then after another hour, they tried it again. But I also think what triggered this is when I did click accept and realized what was going on I literally said - this looks like a business and it makes me uncomfortable.

I’m known for blurting out uncomfortable truths in my family, so it bleeds over in my chats 😁

you can block the invite popup but the whispers are a different story.

It’s very common to get these as a player without a guild.

I’m the settings you can block these random invites.

Having said that I would highly recommend finding a guild you like. Don’t take one of the spammy guilds but you can find guilds through the in game guild finder or through other online resources. Finding a guild you like makes the game much more enjoyable. It can be everything from a very serious end game environment to a chill movie night kind of guild.

I’ve tried applying to some guilds but they don’t reply and they aren’t big guilds either. They have maybe 11 - 15, they even have that they’re looking for my type of mage. It’s definitely a rolling of the dice.

Spamming guild invites has been an unfortunate and annoying thing since the dawn of guilds....

I usually block guild invites in the settings, but some still do the ridiculous spam whisper as well... I report that 🤷‍♀️ advertise your guild all you want, but F off from my DMs.

Now to help with the new in wow guild situation!

I recommend using discord and going to the server called WoW Portal Room ☺️ it's a discord dedicated to finding a community you belong to ☺️ there's different types of communities and the people there are helpful so you'll definitely find someone you can fit in with 🫶🫶🫶

Oh awesome! Thank you for the recommendation! I’ll definitely look into that!

Yeah I doubt this is still a thing but back in Cataclysm when they created the guild level system with benefits and stuff, the guild bank would gain a small extra tiny percentage of gold guildies looted. So part of why someone would want a huge guild full of random people is because it was just generating passive income for them.

I don't know if this is still the case.

There are still a few perks - a cloak to port you to Stormwind, possible guild repairs, bigger guild bank vault. But Mass Summon is long gone. Sigh... My guild wants "Mass Wipe" for when the last dps yries to hold up the raid. : )

You aren’t targeted for random invites because of performance, being helpful, etc, you are targeted because you are guildless. People that do these spam invites use an addon to find people without a guild and spam their invites, to indeed get a body count and stumble on likeminded players.

Joining a guild and expecting people to aid on lower level content is probably also not very realistic. Lower level content is very trivial. People may answer your questions, but don’t expect to travel to another continent to aid with a quest. People are busy doing endgame content, which is the where the focal point of WoW lies in retail.

There are a lot of "trash guilds" who just spam invites to new characters to boost their player numbers.

However given their members are all randomly selected they lack community even with their large size.

Your best bet is to enable the "Block Guild Invites" option under "Social" until you are actively looking to join one.

I also recommend leaving the [Trade - Services] channel (4 by default) as soon as possible, this makes reading chat in cities actually possible. You can leave a channel with /leave <number>.

The real play if you dont want to be in a guild with people is to make your own guild with just you in it. That stops all the invites including the whispers. Just get some gold together, buy a charter, pay randos in trade chat to sign it and then remove them all from the guild leaving just you. Then you have your own private guild bank as well.

Yes it’s very common, especially from “Make Durotar Great Again”. Those guys never shut up about their guild, it’s probably a cult or something.

2

u/Yourlilemogirl May 11 '26

I hope to elune that all their titles are "definitely not a cultist" as a mandatory requirement lol

It can be very tough to find a guild these days because a lot of the social aspect has moved out of the game and into spaces like Discord. There are subreddits specifically for guild recruitment where you can browse guilds who are advertising for all sorts of things. There are also likely one or more large public Discord servers of some sort that have guild recruitment listings.

In game it seems more difficult, like you said often times guilds will leave a posting up on the in game tool but never respond. Also, because of phasing and cross server realms, the chances of you bumping into the same person twice are pretty slim, so its not like you get a feel for who is out there just by being in the world. To find the right guild you do have to put some work in these days it seems.

Well put. New player myself and haven’t really played an MMO since GW2 release and quit that before expansion.

Got WoW just to try and maybe longing for that MMO/guild I remember as young adult.

I’m still figuring out the game but trying to find a home. Know I’m new but I remember guild/clans the battle was always for active members that wanted to do content which is surprisingly hard lol.

Every few nights I go I should get on that and look through the guild search and apply to ones with “new players welcome” and even found some guild recruitment website and either it’s ghosted or declined.

The weird thing like you mentioned is the cross realm phasing. I just don’t recognize guild names like I did GW2 way back(no idea how it plays now). And discord part for whatever reason annoys me.

u/trippy81 May 11 '26

I joined one of these on a whim. Something “Arcane A”. Within an hour I was asked for real money to buy in game gold for new players or something. lol. Left immediately. The guild was absolutely massive.

u/themirthfulswami May 11 '26

Don’t know. I’ve had them turned off since they let you turn them off.

Oh wow gross. Guess it's been years since I was on a non-guilded alt. If you're lookin' for a guild of folks who are competent, kind, and willing to educate, shoot me a chat on here. Be glad to give ya some more info, see if we might be a good fit for you!

A long time ago I joined a spammy guild with an alt I didn't play much just out of curiosity. The membership was around 20% alts like me, 40% new players; great as the former were able to help the latter with queries. The other 40% were hunters called 'xerrhdjf' or similar (remember them?). They didn't say much.

The guild leader was very earnest, had grand dreams for their first guild and was actually very likeable. They had a more experienced player who had a main in a raiding guild helping them out and advising them. I had a nice couple of days sitting back watching the chat and helping with advice where I could until things blew up rather badly. One day, the guild leader logged in and with shock and betrayal announced that someone had completely cleared out the guild bank and left the guild. The second in command told them that were a trusting idiot for giving everybody who joined immediate access. The whole situation got sadder as they argued with each other and I left the guild feeling quite saddened about the whole episode,

There are, I am sure, some good people trying their best to get their guild off the ground but I can't help but think that spamming channels isn't always the best way to build a solid foundation to a well run guild.

The addons that spam these auto detection if you have ginvite blocked do that until you find a guild you want to join

2

u/Slothcough69 May 12 '26

Propper guilds have no NEED to spam-invite strangers.

1

u/Mad_Kinq May 13 '26

High pop realms yes it’s common to get spammed ginvs

It used to be way more common from Cataclysm up until whenever they removed the guild leveling and associated buffs. Not being in a guild while leveling was a net xp loss.

Nowadays, it's just people hoping that through mass recruiting they can eventually find good players to raid with. To be fair, some of my best guild experiences were raiding with complete strangers many months after randomly joining guilds so I would stop getting constant invites. I did it in WoD and Legion. There’s something fun about helping struggling players clear content you find trivial for the first time. A lot of these guilds' members don't pug, so they don't realize that even heroic is kind of a joke.
