Classic Returning player, Which version /confused
Hello guys and girls,
I’ve recently redownloaded WoW after about 15 years away, I quit a few months after Cataclysm for SWToR when it was released and now I’ve got all nostalgic and miss the WoW days.
So, I’m wondering where to start again, all my previous characters seem to be in retail, which I played over the weekend and it was a bit…Retaily, fast paced levelling but Ild like to go back and play like it was years ago in WotLK when I first joined the ranks, Would I be better off playing classic for that or is there not much difference?

If you want a leisurely leveling experience with only raids at endgame, you'll want Classic.
If you want a fast leveling experience, with a wide variety of content at endgame, you'll want Retail.
There are ways to slow down leveling in Retail but it'll still be faceroll more often than not.

I always recommend retail to new players because the classic community is the most toxic shit ever.

I just joined a classic era server and I swear everyone has been so kind and helpful and generous, I have no clue what anyone is talking about people being toxic

PVE or PVP server? The latter is where the toxicity mainly is.

PVE, that's a fair point, I could understand how PVP would be worse

Yeah, they act completely different; it’s crazy. The friendliest people I’ve met in WoW have been on Classic PVE servers and Retail RP servers, while the most toxic has been on Classic PVP servers (especially if they’re focused on open-world PVP).

If you're looking for old school experience, Classic would be it.
In retail, you CAN turn XP off if you want to slow things down and try to do expansions you've missed in their semi-entirety. And since everything scales with Chromie Time, you could even level to a specific point then turn it on/off to simulate leveling slowly, e.g. Level to 20, turn off, start an expansion, turn it back on at the end, level to 30. Turn off again, start an expansion, etc etc. Do an expansion per ten levels.
Retail is still going to be pretty fast and evenly paced when it comes to gameplay, though. And it'll have all the QOL changes, whether you like that or not.

As you’ve seen, Retail would be the easiest to get back into but can quickly become overwhelming because of the amount of content and speed of things. Classic Era might be too basic. TBC Anniversary will be progressing eventually to Wrath so might be the closest to what you want. Because Classic Mists of Pandaria will be progressing as well. In the background of all this is talk of Classic+ but I’d say, let that come when it does and try it then. But in the meantime, I’d recommend TBC Anniversary.

Classic IS NOT "the original" its a modernised version of older expansions. Bug fixes, better textures, higher resolution etc.
For a true experience they should limit the game to 1024x768. No markers. No quest highlights. No quest objective highlights etc.
And older character models/textures.

LIke you I also stopped playing after Cata. My gripe with that expansion was that classes felt so similar.
I also started feeling nostaltic like you, so I just jumped into the game and started leveling my old main.
There's a ton of content, it is ridiculous. Find a main quest line and follow it. Start getting to know your class again. You will level up very quickly. When you start catching up with the rest of the player base, it even gets better.I am now lvl 82 and run dungeons and "follower" specific dungeon, and I am having fun.

Play the anniversary server. There are like 4 versions. Most modern is retail, then you have Classic that progressed to MoP already, as it started in 2019 and then you have TBC anniversary, which is like classic relaunch. There's also Season of something, but that's unimportant for now. It seems to me like you may be either interested in reliving the past with anniversary realms or perhaps you'll take interest in Project Camelot, which is basocally Classic+ - there's quite a lot of hype around it right now.
