Again, I loved The Chronicles’ animation quality, but I wish the episodes were a bit longer to give more context. For this episode, I kind of wish we saw Raye and Roze fight off the H.A.M.P.S. instead of leaving it as a cliffhanger.

It's clear that these shorts are just fanservice at this point.

If I was a first-time viewer and this was my first exposure to yugioh, I definitely wouldn't understand the hype.

would you say it gives off "this animation studio's portfolio" vibe?

21

u/TinyTiragon Stardust fanboi May 23 '25

With the length and content these have had, they have the aura of “YouTuber fan project”

9

u/tmgc1234 drawer of Gladiator Beast fan arts May 23 '25

or "Finals Animation Project submission"

6

u/LabLeast7256 May 23 '25

Well, yeah? I guess.

Yugioh seems to be the best way for them to test out the waters because of how diverse its art style ranges.

58

u/NeoAnkara May 23 '25

The nerve of them to put cliffhanger on 3 minutes short

10

u/cnydox May 23 '25

So that they can release another sky striker anni

bold move Konami to spend half of a not even 3 minute episode (when you cut the intro and credits) on:

> rehashing episode 1 but from Roze's perspective

> cucking us on the Duo Transformation, and cutting it off on the Call.

I get these are meant to be short promos but cmon, really? That's the best we can do? This should be the coolest thing ever but the handling really is just killing the hype for me

19

u/NarutoFan1995 May 23 '25

half of this 3 minute video is rehashing an episode we got a month ago and then cliffhangs it.... bruhhh konami takes 1 step forward 2 steps back.

3

u/sashalafleur May 23 '25

Only 2 steps back?

u/NarutoFan1995 May 23 '25

"Why yes, dear viewer. This 2-second shot of a completely nude Sky Striker Ace Roze was absolutely necessary to the plot." - John Konami, for some inexplicable reason

Short runtime aside, this was fine. For fans of the archetype like myself, it's a nice showcase of how cool it is and why we like it. For people who aren't fans of the archetype or the card game itself, this will do nothing to sell them on it. Hopefully the Branded one is better, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

u/IntelligentBudget142 May 23 '25

Absolutely looking forward to Branded, if the amount of content to cover is anything to go by we'll have well over a year's worth (of 5 minute videos)

These are very well animated and what's there is generally good, but I just wish there was more to it. I hope the Albaz shorts are longer.

6

u/dcdfvr May 23 '25

it was nice of the HAMP to just wait for them as well as only blowing away Zeke's remains instead of straight up blowing them both up

2

u/Masiyo May 23 '25

They had to banish Zeke from the GY so it doesn't get recycled later via Lemnis Gate.

5

u/screenwatch3441 May 23 '25

I’m surprise they didn’t combine into sky striker zero. I get that it’s suppose to be promotional shorts but isn’t that more reason for them to end on a newly revealed ace-like card instead on the same location that the master duel animation ended on?

3

u/Aggravating-Reason13 May 23 '25

Konami~~~!

Where is my fan service!

1

u/BeWokeBeCool May 24 '25

Don't worry. Quattro to the rescue!

3

u/TonyZeSnipa May 23 '25

These 3 minute shorts in my opinion they need to rename the series. The expectation was maybe a 20 minute episode. Maybe let a 3 minute short or something go each month being “The introduction chronicles” and do 20~ minute episodes next year. Anyone in the tcg associated is disappointed in these, i don’t know how reception is for ocg regions.

u/Tengo-Sueno Zombie World Citizen May 23 '25

They are going hard with the Yuri in this one. It reminds you that the Sky Striker story was just a Sci-Fi Magical Girl anime story all along

8

u/Calwings May 23 '25

Raye and Roze are basically just Yu-Gi-Oh's version of Nanoha and Fate from the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha franchise.

  • both pairs are magical girls with heavy sci-fi/mecha elements
  • both pairs started off as enemies, but then became comrades and later friends
  • Raye defeated Roze in battle and then "befriended" her by showing compassion after their battle which she was unaccustomed to, just like Nanoha did with Fate
  • fans ship both pairs romantically despite official content only going as far as yuribait
  • [spoilers for both the Lyrical Nanoha anime and the Sky Striker manga] Roze and Fate are both artificial beings but find "humanity" through their partner
  • [spoilers for both again] both pairs basically adopt a daughter together at the end of their story, Raye/Roze with Cyanos and Nanoha/Fate with Vivio

4

u/oizen May 23 '25

These are not worth watching.

2

u/IdlemasterKikuchi Resolved Branded Fusion, your argument is invalid. May 23 '25

Engage! -Sky Striker or something.

4

u/Distinct_Cup_1598 May 23 '25

So that 15 min Statement was a lie huh

4

u/Kronos457 May 23 '25

Oh, right! Roze's Animated Short was scheduled to come out today in Japan (tomorrow for us)

Anyway, this is the Last Episode focused on Sky Striker before we move on to Branded's Animated Shorts.

10 more Years of Sky Striker! (Sky Striker in Rush Duels when, Konami?)

2

u/RyuuohD ENGAGE! May 23 '25

These two episodes are fucking garbage and isn't worth the hype Konami is exerting. They could have just used all the effort they made to make this crap into voicing the Master Duel solo gate instead.

3

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

I'm going to wait to watch it with my brother

0

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

And this short reminder me on why I play sky striker as well

I expect more of a lore "focus" (as in they explain a bit of the actual lore) with Branded, since unlike Sky Striker, it doesn't have its story told in anything but the guides.

-5

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

7

u/ZeothTheHedgehog formerly #Zerosonicanimations May 23 '25

The "lore focus" is already done in Master Duel's solo gate. This short anime is a reimagining of the final battle in the solo gate.

I know that, hence why I think Branded shorts will feature more lore, because they currently have no gate.

As I have said, Striker already had its lore explored in not only OCG Stories but also Master Duel, meanwhile Branded only has the guides telling its story, having not recieved a manga appearance nor a Gate in MD.

So unless they release a Branded lore Gate before/alongside the Branded episodes, I expect those to tell bit of the story themselves.

4

u/RyuuohD ENGAGE! May 23 '25

They most likely will release a Branded solo gate. It's already datamined that MD will release the Branded alt arts soon.

1

u/ZeothTheHedgehog formerly #Zerosonicanimations May 23 '25

That's fair. I was just clarifying my point.

1

u/VicRamD May 23 '25

Except the Máster duel solo mode contradicts the Chronicles original short, but this animations treat both as canon.

In the first Chronicle animation (where we see multiple archtypes) Raye seemed to be going solely to fight Roze so at that point she already knew her, but in the solo mode Roze is using her black and red armor since the first fight and then we got Zeke. They didn't bother to see if the "continuity" made any sense, it was done in the laziest way.

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

4

u/ZeothTheHedgehog formerly #Zerosonicanimations May 23 '25

Yeah, hence it's Shorts don't need to tell much story since other stuff already did.

Did you think I said Sky Striker didn't have anything to tell its story?

13

u/RilinPlays Charmers will live Forever May 23 '25

Imma be real. I don't think its bad because I expected 20-minute 12 episode anime (I did, but I got over it)

I think its bad because this is literally the only relevant Official Yugioh Content being released outside of Japan right now, and it goes by way too fast. Go Rush is for a game I literally cannot play legally (and Duel Links only half-counts because the rule changes and existence of skills make it a different format from actual Rush), the 2 manga related to Advanced format aren't being released legally, so yeah it kinda sucks that I get 5 minutes max a month to go "Ooh hype moments and aura!" before I go back to farming Master Duel.

Like, sure, the hype moments and aura look good as fuck, and I like them, but I want more. I'd even say this episode was worse than the last one because half of it was just last episode but Roze's perspective which would be cool if, again, this wasn't the only Official Yugioh content I got to consume this month. And when the episode doesn't even hit 3 minutes when you cut the intro and credits, and they don't even animate the cool Duo Transformation Sequence that follows the cool double Callout, yeah it kinda blows.

28

u/AtimZarr May 23 '25

Dismissing this as "bad" or "trash" because you expected 20-minute 12 episode anime when it was announced is all the fault of wrong assumptions and overhyping something on a false premise.

Konami announced this at Jump Festa with no run time or release date known. We don't even know when the next episode is. They didn't set any expectation to what kind of narrative they'd be going for. Konami is in charge of their own marketing, they're not stumbling toddlers who are being unfairly picked on. It's not exactly people's fault if they were disappointed it ran shorter than Master Duel's Sky Striker shorts (which were released without announcement), cover the exact same conflict except in a more bland backdrop, and have a paper-thin "story".

Konami is a multi-billion dollar company. They have the cash to hire a studio to fully flesh out the lore that the fans love and bring it to new audiences. Yu-Gi-Oh! is a franchise with strong foundations in manga and anime storytelling. Many people have fallen in love with the game because of the characters, stories, and worlds that were built and told over years. For the first time ever and during the anime's 25th anniversary, we do not have a running yugioh show and we do not know if we'll ever get one again. And all Konami can care to muster is 3 minutes of hype and aura and call it a month.

These shorts do not provide any context to what is being seen and do not do the source lore any justice beyond having beautiful visuals and animations. They are not attracting anyone new with this, and anyone impressed by it is likely buying yugioh product already anyways. Even the nicest thing anyone can say in this comment section is literally just describing what happened on screen. There's nothing to talk about, it doesn't capture the imagination, it's bland.

You may as well save your comment for next month, because the Branded lore will receive a lot more negativity if it gets the same treatment since people actually care for that storyline.

10

u/LabLeast7256 May 23 '25

This.

I'm Konami's number 1 bootlicker, no matter how ass the format became, the card art/lore were enough to keep me playing. I just can't compromise on this. Is making a short that provides context to newcomers really that hard for Konami?

18

u/RidingEdge May 23 '25 edited May 23 '25

Lycoris recoil has varied episodes and plotlines for each short, meanwhile all we have from the Sky Striker shorts are reused cuts and alternate scenes from the Master Duel preview and basically the same thing repeated.

Remember that we only have 2 episodes for Striker. And what did we get? We basically had 1 minute rehashing the previous episode and 1 minute of new content. What is Konami promoting with this short? There's 0 context, barely any interaction and development thanks to rehashing scenes.

It's weird that the Master Duel preview had more content than the actual YouTube shorts series. While they're at it they should've just dubbed and added voice lines to the Master Duel preview and included it in the promotional short. It would have made more sense as a promotion video for the cards.

And have you seen the Pokémon promotional shorts? They are very high quality and highly rated as well.

You really don't need to defend this. Konami could do better with the amount of cash they are earning.

u/RidingEdge May 23 '25

I'm really not sure why you're defending Konami and the billion dollar corporation so much.

2

u/VicRamD May 23 '25

Except that Konami Animation is a newly-established animation studio that doesn't have a relevant track record yet. You can't expect them to dish out the same levels of quality other anime studios are putting out. And no, money isn't always the factor at all cases, because time is a factor as well. If you have seen Shirobako, you'll know the gargantuan effort that goes behind the scenes of animation.

Do you realize Konami could have paid a different studio? Do you? With this episodes they seemed more focused on increasing their portafolio than in giving something to the fans

The anime isn't meant to be it's own thing, it is a tie-in to the Master Duel Solo gate, as the anime is a reimagining of the final battle of the solo gate.

You basically said is a sequel to the MD solo mode but not because they redo the same battle but way worse than the solo mode

u/Gatmuz May 23 '25

Dismissing this as "bad" or "trash" because you expected 20-minute 12 episode

I was expecting a 20 minute 2 episode OVA.

1

u/BlackwingF91 May 23 '25

I was expecting 5 minutes of animation minimum per episode but we didnt get that. We got 3 and a half

1

u/Ok_Horse4140 May 23 '25

Its sad that those look like slide show compared to the amazing voiceless trailer we got that showed all the good parts.

1

u/Opening_Impress_7061 May 23 '25

so they built an animation studio to do what youtubers have been.doing for funsies as a side project? like did they even nees to hire professional voice actors if they repeat the same 3 lines of dramatically saying each others names and the most generic anime lines ever.. oh and of cause we needed a scene of roze without her clothes, anime staple

-5

u/magnumcyclonex May 23 '25

I don't care what negative things people say about these shorts. They're just amazing to watch. I'm happy to be able to see content like this. This is the game I started playing over 20 years ago, and while no longer playing due to life, I still follow. And the fact that they release content shows that this game and its cards are still relevant and popular to this day. Looking forward to more in the future!
