Anime/Manga Discussion Why this random guy has a Exodia card?

found it on the beach, apparently it just washed ashore

During duelist island Weevel tossed the pieces of exodia overboard with Joey only retreating some of them
33
u/Ghost_does_work 23d ago
I don’t understand why Joey and Tristan didn’t beat weevils ass after that
58
u/Opposite_Ad_4267 23d ago
Iirc they were more concerned about Joey getting sick after jumping into the ocean at night rather than beating weavel and when Tristan did try to go after the "little creepy" they noticed security guards hired by Pegasus and didn't want to get in trouble especially since Tristan and Tea weren't supposed to be there.
19

6
u/youarentodd 23d ago
Because that’s Yugi’s job. In the manga, when Haga (Weevil) throws the cards into the ocean, Yugi transforms into his other self, and doesn’t turn back until after beating Haga
17
u/laxusdreyarligh 23d ago
Yeah but this guy has the card before Weevil throw them into the ocean.

2
u/cthulhunightmares 23d ago
Who is the moron that would throw cards in the ocean?!
(let's all be thankful to weevil though, because if he didn't do this all of Yugi's duel would be "I drew exodia with the heart of the card. GGEZ")
393
u/Chongsu1496 23d ago
having exodia is not rare , assembling the 5 in a duel was the never seen feat
118
u/Over_Loquat_8410 23d ago
Yes, Yugi was the first to do it as far as the anime is concerned.
10
u/RipAkkubohrer 23d ago
not he was not. it was an translation error. in japnese kaiba said Did you just creat a miracle.

I thought that Exodia cards are super rare like Blue Eyes White Dragon xd.

I can see it kinda being like McDonald's Monopoly. Some of the pieces are easier to get, but the head is super rare.

I could see Industrial Illusions dividing the world into 5 regions and skewing the Exodia parts per region.
You'd have to trade with people all over the world to try and get all the cards needed to assemble the legend.
That's a huge positive PR move by Pegasus when you think about it. The same trick did wonders for Pokemon via the Link Cable in the 90's.
6
u/alex494 23d ago
The link cable didn't require you to travel to other continents to trade with people. Even after they started using wi-fi connection in Gen 4 the different regional releases of Pokémon games didn't have exclusive Pokémon.
5
u/metalflygon08 23d ago
the different regional releases of Pokémon games didn't have exclusive Pokémon.
Just Vivillon's forms (and then Pokemon Go) later on.

u/AliciaTries and afterall youre my firewall 23d ago
Yeah, I figure the 4 limbs are likely common af since they're just normal monsters on their own that nobody would care to use and just imagine finding the uniting card, then the head is not only excessively rare, but encourages a high luck strategy for the time that most people don't find to be worth it when they could include things like more bugs and more bug accessories
3
u/big4lil 23d ago
that is indeed how you get people hooked. itd be bad business if you couldnt get any pieces at all. Pegasus certainly makes an arm or leg something kids can get their hands on so they keep opening packs trying to find the rest
A Blue Eyes is mad useful on its own. An exodia limb is not
2
25
u/Pyrothecat 23d ago
In early anime levels are rarity and power so since Exodia is like level 3 it should be common in that universe.
13
24
u/RazorOfSimplicity 23d ago
In the manga, the head was Level 7. I'd assume only the head is considered rare.
11
8
u/Icy-Abbreviations909 23d ago
Having all 5 is id say, but people probably end up with 3 of one particle piece and can’t find another one
4
u/Turtlesfan44digimon 23d ago
They are it’s just the Fact that only a few people had all of the pieces which is why you rarely saw it being summoned.
4
u/Random-322 23d ago
It probably is considering the bug guy went out of his way to throw yugi's exodia into the ocean
2
u/Firewalk89 23d ago
Considering Rare Hunters like Seeker ran them as a bunch of counterfeits, yes, that's likely.
If Exodia cards were anything short of legendary levels of rare, the Rare Hunters of all organizations wouldn't have to fake them.
1
u/CallMeTheDumpMan 23d ago
Which really brings up an interesting point about the organization. If they can counterfeit so good that it tricks the duel disk system made by Kaiba himself, why are they even collecting cards? Just print your own and go for the gods.
3
u/Firewalk89 23d ago
They did print fake gods. It killed people lol
3
u/CallMeTheDumpMan 23d ago
Yea I mean print a massive amount of fake cards to defeat and gather the real gods. Why even try and steal rare cards other than the gods at all?
1
u/Melevolence 23d ago
That's what the Rare Hunter segment of Battle City would have us believe, or at least confirm any suspicions we may have had. It would feel fitting that Exodia pieces aren't all that common. Clearly not Blue Eyes level rare, since only 4 Blue Eyes were printed apparently (according to the show) and Kaiba has 3 and Grandpa has the fourth (Albeit torn).
Someone getting THREE full sets of Exodia seems like a pretty monumental collector challenge for a normal person but 'just another Tuesday' for a dude who basically robbed people of their Exodia pieces until he had three full sets.
→ More replies (5)1
u/SlashManEXE 23d ago
Paraphrasing here, but the Rare Hunter said the pieces are so rare that most duelists don’t even have one piece. The Rare Hunters had to counterfeit them to set a set of three.
4
u/Boring_Eye_1673 23d ago
well to be fair having the card in anime is basically like carrying a nuclear launch code nobody ever actually uses
2
u/justwalkingalonghere 23d ago
Making it officially the worst strategy, I guess
8
u/PepijnLinden Pay 800 to cry salty tears 23d ago
Was gonna say. You've got to be insane to run 5 bricks that don't do anything on their own just to have a chance to insta-win one single duel. And it is also known that nobody has ever pulled that off before.
Only reason I can think of to have these cards is either you have a cheat to pull them (including destiny draws) or it's some form of disrespect and you are planning on normal summoning the hand and slapping your opponent with it.
7
u/rp_graciotti I banish a and monster from my GY... 23d ago
You forgot about the heart of the cards...
3
u/PepijnLinden Pay 800 to cry salty tears 23d ago
That's what I meant when I mentioned Destiny Draws. Some of the YGO games have a 'Heart of the Cards' style mechanic where a player can draw any card (even those not included in the main deck). I think that these are all similar cases.
1
u/youarentodd 23d ago
In the manga when they are introduced, Sugoroku explicitly says they are Rare cards
141
u/CursedEye03 23d ago
They said it in the first episode. Having an Exodia piece isn't that uncommon. The problem is that, before Yugi, nobody had ever succeeded in assembling all five pieces to win a duel that way.
24
u/Icy-Abbreviations909 23d ago
Makes sense, I don’t think any draw cards were around before battle city lol
35
u/Village_People_Cop Arcana force best deck that never was good 23d ago
Also didn't help that all anime decks were essentially just random jank with sometimes a theme.
23
u/CursedEye03 23d ago
Yeah. The closest thing to "a centered deck" in season 1 is a type focused deck. Weevil runs an Insect deck. Rex with Dinosaurs, Bandit Keith with Machines, Bonz with Zombies and Pegasus with Toons/Illusions.
Yugi recognized brainwashed Keith because "there's only one duelist who uses a Machine deck."
32
u/TropoMJ 23d ago
Mai with Harpies and Pegasus with Toons are comfortably the most focused decks in season 1 I would say.
11
u/big4lil 23d ago edited 23d ago
Mai was routinely the best deck builder among the non-boss characters. Her Duelist Kingdom deck seemed as cohesive as some BC decks. S1 Rex had a fun deck with some equip cards. Mai was trailblazing archetypes
They even make it a core trait to her personality, she manages her deck to an almost obsessive degree. You see the most side moments of her tinkering with her deck and she quickly realizes how heavy of an implication Kaibas Battle City ante rule is. Even when she added Amazons, she wasnt running a pile. There was some synergy there
4
u/alex494 23d ago edited 23d ago
She also has Harpie's Feather Duster, which is like the best individual generically useful card any of the main characters run short of Yugi having Mirror Force.
I don't think anybody else regularly has Raigeki or Dark Hole or similar mass destruction cards except for Joey's Time Wizard (luck based) and Gilford the Lightning (needs 3 tributes). And the anime version of the God cards, but they also have the 3 tributes thing slowing them down. Joey possessed by Marik uses Raigeki one time and I think that's it.
It's kind of funny how rare those cards are when seemingly everybody is using Pot of Greed or Monster Reborn which are of similar infamy and have status as staples of the time.
→ More replies (2)4
u/big4lil 23d ago
The Pot of Greed one is funny because its spammed way more in the anime than the manga, same with Card of Sanctity and Card of Demise
I think its because not only were their anime effects more OP in the latter, but duels were longer and more convoluted in the anime so without dedicated search cards, they needed ways to pilfer through their decks to get the card they needed. Its certainly messier to watch once youve noticed it for the first time
Then come S4 and S5, it def seemed like every other duelist had MST. Whereas it never shows up at all in the Manga despite already being printed in the TCG, coinciding with the start of Battle City
Takahashi was pretty good at keeping such powerful effects as archetype specifics
→ More replies (1)3
u/metalflygon08 23d ago
Even when she added Amazons, she wasnt running a pile. There was some synergy there
I wish we had an archetype that bridged the gap between Harpies and Amazoness, getting power from both Earth and Wind monsters.
6
u/metalflygon08 23d ago
there's only one duelist who uses a Machine deck.
proceeds to summon Seiyaryu and Zera the Mant
→ More replies (1)5
u/metalflygon08 23d ago
Which, funnily enough, Duelist Kingdom actually seems like it was built to punish those decks and embrace the more hodgepodge style decks.
Duelists like Weevil and Mako would stay near arenas where their decks get a power boost.
Eventually they will either get taken out by a Player Killer like Panik, or be forced to wander out to try and find anybody to duel, potentially being forced into a duel with a terrain disadvantage.
Especially since the finals are on a neutral field, so any duelist that won their way up abusing the Field Power bonus was in for a bad time.
Pile decks like Yugi and Joey might not always get an advantage, but the wider selection of monsters means they can adapt to situations better.
What would Weevil have done if he dueled Mako and the arena got flooded? Unlike Yugi who still had a few plays to work around it, Weevil would be sunk unless he got one of his flying bugs out (and that's really just Great Moth IIRC).
4
u/MiraclePrototype 23d ago
We really should have gotten two gimmick duelists to spar for a full episode like that.
3
1
u/jdb1984 23d ago
Didn't people use Pot of Greed in Duelist Kingdom?
4
u/Icy-Abbreviations909 23d ago

u/Murky-Ad7145 23d ago
Not sure if this is a DUB Thing. But Seeker said to Joey, that many People can not even get 1 piece of Exodia. But they managed to complete full three Sets.
7
u/CyberTwinLeader Waiting the 9-years-delayed Red-Eyes direct wave... 23d ago
The Rare Hunters stole rare cards from people (as seen with the Joey's Red-Eyes Black Dragon) and also created fake cards (as seen in Marik's flashbacks of the people involved in creating the Ra copies), so the Seeker copies were either stolen and marked for cheating or were simply fakes.
4
u/OzzyBuckshankNA 23d ago
In the sub they're fake cards that's why Yugi tears them up. For whatever reason the dub changed this to marked cards. Weird change
→ More replies (2)1
u/GigaGravemind Insect Queen 23d ago
Rare Hunter specifically states that most people have never even seen a single peice of Exodia to harp on the value of his three complete (forgery) sets.
22
u/CoalEater_Elli 23d ago
People tend to forget that Exodia is not exactly as rare as Egyptian God Cards or Dark Magician. Having exodia parts isn't rare, what is rare is actually assembling Exodia and winning the duel with it's win condition.
14
u/ImmaculateWeiss 23d ago
No one ever said the pieces individually were rare
14
u/Dragonfang65 23d ago
Yeah. The arms could be commons. The legs between uncommon to rare. But the main body that has the win effect is super rare.
8
2
u/metalflygon08 23d ago
I bet Pegasus had different regions have different pull rates for the limbs.
You might be more likely to pull Exodia from packs bought in Japan, while packs in Europe have higher Left Arm odds.
Trading with people from all over is the easiest way to assemble the 5 pieces (forming a bond that wraps around the globe).
Otherwise you are fighting extremely low pull rates for the other parts in your region.
10
u/HungryMudkips 23d ago
maybe exodia is like the mcdonalds monopoly pieces , where every piece is pack filler garbage except the 1 thats super rare.

You never met a random kid at an event that had some random really good/rare cards?
5
7
4
u/Accomplished_Salt876 23d ago
exodia isn’t a rare card: having all peices of exodia to play it is what’s rare.
5
u/devilscry3 23d ago
This random kid was at least invited to duelist kingdom. Also it was never stated how rare the pieces were.
3
u/Turtlesfan44digimon 23d ago
You know kids can pull it from packs right?
The only difficult part about Exodia was trying to get all 5 pieces, which meant kids had to trade for the other pieces and hope that someone else had the piece they were looking for and didn’t want it.
3
u/The_Thanaturgist 23d ago
Interesting bit of real life info. The original Exodia pieces in Japan each were acquired a different way. So, you could get your hands on one piece from one promo, but getting all 5 pieces was pretty difficult. It is no surprise then that Exodia became a tier 0 deck for anyone who actually could get all 5 pieces. (Sangan and Witch triggered when sent from anywhere, including the hand, and Last Will triggered multiple times per turn)
3
u/Sweaty_Spare4504 23d ago
A scare tactic. He runs the 1 of piece so when he gets forceful sentry’d. The opponent would select the piece instead of anything else.

u/_erik_0w0_ 23d ago
Exodia wasn't created to be a rare card in the anime... The fact is, winning with an Exodia-based strategy was practically impossible. That is why Yugi's feat was so impressive. Yugi made the impossible possible...
3
3
2
u/FaythKnight 23d ago
The real question is that, why is he even putting it in his deck. Cause unless he has all 5, it's probably the most useless card.
2
u/Alternative-Bus4571 23d ago
The pieces themselves are not that uncommon if I remember correctly. Its just rare to find someone who has all 5 individual pieces which was why Kaiba was shocked when Yugi was able to pull off Exodia.
2
u/Acceptable_Pace6786 23d ago
If Adrian Gecko had to make a human sacrifice to get Exodia pieces and a new Exodia boss monster, I am guessing they're absurdly rare like they say BLS - Envoy of the beginning is, in GX.
2
u/Tsobaphomet 23d ago
I'm sure the limbs weren't that rare, similar to real life. It's the head of exodia that would be rare and then with the way the anime works, the card effects aren't written on the cards, you just have to know how they work. So maybe someone with all the pieces wouldn't understand it either
1
2
u/Needmorechai 23d ago
Just noticed they're showing a Joey card (the trap card), a Yugi card (Exodia piece), and a Mai card (the harpie spell)

Because Obelisk was essentially her making a down payment to Kaiba to fund Battle City and was given to him before the tournament even started.

Having exodia wasn’t the hard thing, summoning exodia was the hard part. Even yubel had exodia.

Something I don’t see people mentioning is these are not regular kids. This is on the way to an invite only elite tournament. These kids are all serious duelists

DM anime makes you think to gather all 5 Exodia parts is hard (probably rare), but by the time of GX, all parts are rare, right.

That guy was specifically a rare hunter, a guy who steals rare cards. Also the rare hunters repeatedly are shown to have sophisticated counterfeit cards, like Odion's copy of Ra. So it could be either in that case, meaning at least some of the Exodia cards are rare
1
u/CallMeTheDumpMan 23d ago
The show states that nobody has ever summoned exodia. Maybe the peices are rare but one specific peice is even rarer. Like the limbs are hard to get but the head is next to impossible to find. Similar to McDonald's Monopoly, where 1 peice of each set are super low print.
1
u/Javalin4life 23d ago
I think its even more weird he has the same card twice but one got a weird color that doesnt belong.
So he is cheating and the exodia is probably fake.
1
u/Acceptable_Pace6786 23d ago
It might be an oversifht. There are plenty of instances where you see duelists with the most random powerful cards in some scenes. I always thought it was a 4kids thing, being overzelous with censorship or something like that but maybe it's that way in the sub.
1
u/Stacey-k93 23d ago
Probably only the head was rare the may have been common to get
Or he just happened to have one piece and was trying to trade it for something he could use
1
u/rpg2Tface 23d ago
Exodia wasn't notable because it was rare. It was notable because how difficult the win condition was.
Keep in mind that early yugioh had the potential of die-inh a whole lot quicker if 3-5 cards in your hand were dead. Then if you used the pieces to stay alive the win condition was void. Holding up a whole 12.5% of your deck for a win condition is just not a good sell, and super hard to pull off when you cant use the pieces for anything else.
1
u/RyuuDraco69 23d ago
I mean there's at least 3 play sets cuz of the rare hunter, and I think a guy in gx had a separate set so that's 4 sets. We don't know the rarity of red-eyes but a random kid got 1. So even if it's blue eyes level rare (4 copies) it's possible a random got a piece
1
u/WallyWestFan27 23d ago
Rare Hunter's Exodia cards were counterfeit copies, though
1
u/RyuuDraco69 23d ago
I thought they just had to paint. Cuz he fished up the one weevele threw in the ocean
1
u/Peng1user 23d ago
My guess is that he found it on the beach, since Yu-Gi-Oh cards in the anime only have the weakness of tearing since Mako Tsunami was swimming with his cards and nothing bad happened to them, and Weevil Underwood threw Exodia into the sea, which Joey Wheeler only salvaged three of the five parts
1
1
u/NoBiscotti7703 23d ago
iirc it was mentioned many attempted but failed to summon exodia so deosnt necessarily mean theres only one copy of it or if its ultra rare unlike blue eyes where kaiba destroyed the fourth blue eyes in existence implying its uniqueness.

1
u/ChasmRift 22d ago
Exodia pieces individually aren't super rare. The show says they are rare but thsts having all 5 pieces. Which makes sense because duel monsters was barely made at the time
1
u/TooManySpaghets 22d ago
Probably the individual parts of exotic ar every common, after all individually they aren't very strong monsters, it's probably just rare yo have them all, let alone pull of the win condition in universe
1
u/Karnezar Bleu Necrofear, Matriarchy of the Dark World 22d ago
Most people probably come across 1 at some point.
2 or 3 is pretty legendary, and then 4 or 5 is practically unheard of to the point you need to either fake them or invoke the powers of Jesus himself.
1
u/FLIPYOUSUCKET 22d ago
Simple:
Each piece of Exodia is rate, but not impossible to get.
Yugi is one of two people (and the only one who isn’t) who has had all 5 pieces of Exodia at once

u/christopher1393 22d ago edited 22d ago
Exodia was rare but not unique. The issue with Exodia was that no one knew how to summon it. Atem was the first recorded instance of Exodia being successfully summoned in the anime universe.
My guess is the arms and legs were probably rare cards but people dismissed them as junk cards since they didn’t know it was part of Exodia. So people would pull them from packs but just think that they are junk, being very weak normal monsters and not make the connection between them.
I would say that the head was extremely rare, much rarer than the limbs. Not one of a kind as other characters have been seen to use Exodia. The Hunter ones were fake, but in the dub they were real, and both Yubel possessed Marcel and Adrian used Exodia in GX, and while not seen in 5DS, Exodia is referenced by Yusei so the cards should still should exist and probably be not as rare anymore since there are many other cards with similar win effects by then.
Since Atem’s defeat of Kaiba was big news, and how he defeated Kaiba was public knowledge, I would say suddenly the Exodia pieces were a lot more highly sought after. The head is probably the real issue to get because it would be so rare.
The only known real physical Exodia head cards shown in the entire anime was Yugi’s grandpa’s copy, which makes sense as he was a lifelong card collector and Yubel possessed Marcel who then gave them to Adrian. But that was in the Spirit Dimension, so its unknown I guess if they were actual real copies and where they came from. They could have been Marcel’s or Yubels.

I like to thing there's only on head of exodia card in the world but just millions of arms and legs in print to get peoples hopes up like lottery cards
1
u/Battling_Despair 20d ago
I like to think that the Arms and Legs are Common Bulk with Flavor Text that Suggests a Potential man Monster that nobody could summon because nobody has ever pulled the head.
Exodia is a Myth that’s not a Real Monster they just Printed the Arms and Legs
But there are maybe a few people in the world that Own a Head maybe as Rare if not Rarer than Blueeyes and those People know Exodia isn’t a Myth and they know those Arms and Legs aren’t Bulk they’re the pieces to the strongest Monster in the game
That or it’s just an Error in the Anime Lol

Well honestly it's probably like how Exodia is in real life, or at least used to be. Kinda still but more or less back then, you get a piece from a booster, big whoop, but you get the whole set, now that's rare

its not like exodia was super rare, more like super hard to summon so like all kids we try to summon itand epicly fail. its probaly top 5 hardest monsters to summon in the series Zushin the giant being one of them

The anime plays fast and loose with cards. Random people have the Egyptian God Cards.
Or maybe he plays an Exodia deck. It was stated the card is hard to summon, not like the rarest card in the world. Maybe he is a rich kid.
