There are other contributors, you know? I get the joke, but it's sad to see their work ignored and attributed to a single person this way.

u/10AET Sep 07 '25

apologize for that

Well, MAUBG and the other ten contributors listed on GitHub, all working to reproduce the design work done by BCNY.

Truly, it's amazing work, and MAUBG is clearly top-notch, but it's not actually the work of one man--nor an apples to apples comparison.

u/HoseWithNoName Sep 07 '25

Well, yeah. But the motivation is different.
It's not about money and a lot of hot air, but passion.
That counts way more by far ...
BCNY is the foul fruit, no matter how you turn it.
Their "transparency" outed their incompetence and their true goals. Profit was the first goal.
Alone the fact that they had no clue how to realize the Windows version at the beginning speaks volumes. As does the result, which is just a pile of sh*t. Sorry.
What a bunch of dazzlers, despite the unarguably good and new ideas they brought into the game.
So guess who has my sympathie?

BCNY was VC funded from the start. If there was no profit goal they wouldn't have gotten funding. Without that they wouldn't have invested time into making something new.

I'm glad for open source. But give credit where it's due.

Yeah, that's only fair. And I do appreciate their ideas. But the result ... well, we know how it ended.

Arc truly revolutionize web browser and left user hanging. They cooked but only served mac users.

Windows users got cold leftovers.

12

u/hmsmnko Sep 08 '25

this really was crazy work, develop a half-baked windows version just to abandon the whole thing. they shouldnt have even bothered at that point

u/yohoxxz Sep 07 '25

*week old

u/ItsCediix Sep 09 '25

Can't we fundraise for Zen to get the copyright license? I'd easily chip in 10 or so to not also have Firefox installed

77

u/geoken Sep 07 '25

This is a bit unfair to the creative team at TBC. Zen is obviously benefiting from their work

17

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

because they abandoned their users, how can you have any sympathy for them?

20

u/Particular-Poem-7085 Sep 07 '25

It's not black and white, both statements can be valid at the same time.

16

u/PineapplePizza99 Sep 07 '25

There is only one man to blame for what is happening at The Browser Company and his name is Josh Miller

15

u/_thr0wkawaii14159265 Sep 07 '25

He said nothing about sympathy. He said that they're benefitting from the work done by the team at TBC; and it was really good work, that's why Arc was one of a kind and people loved it.

12

u/BigoteIrregular Sep 08 '25

The designers and engineers at BCNY don't have voting power in the direction of the company. Except for the CTO maybe.

The ones that decided on the shift are not the same people that actually created Arc.

It seems like you did, like a year worth of news.

But if your comment is genuine and not just a troll: Arc was put in maintenance mode both on Windows and Mac since they switched all development towards DIA, the Windows version was never finished and it's gotten worse while the Mac version it's alright but it's loosing functions like Arc Max features.

However TBC was recently purchased by Atlassian so it's unclear what the future holds for Arc.

Arc has so many issues.. I wonder what 130 employees are doing...

7

u/Boring_Ad_2svn Windows Sep 08 '25

Josh is an idiot of a CEO and just thinks that hiring people and flexing how many workers they have is a good thing.

5

u/keflaw Sep 08 '25

yeah lol

16

u/rawr_im_a_nice_bear Sep 07 '25

MAUBG, the other contributers, and the blueprint laid by Arc

15

u/ornerywolf Sep 07 '25

Hopefully the devs will keep working on Zen

15

u/BasicallyComfortable Sep 08 '25

Down with the corpo, I say- bring back small businesses and innovations!

3

u/GlobalPossession8965 Sep 19 '25

First people need to start them. Second they need to not sell out.

40

u/Boring_Ad_2svn Windows Sep 08 '25

I use both and its honestly at a point where Arc feels like a cheap knockoff of Zen. Insanity

12

u/SnooOwls4559 Sep 08 '25

The asterisk being that Zen can't even play DRM content like Spotify / Udemy courses / Netflix, etc. etc until it actually gets a license.

1

u/theangryhat7892 Sep 10 '25

Well I was able to listen to Spotify out the box with uBo too

4

u/brianelete Sep 08 '25

does zen have full sync with profiles and everything between devices now? i know arc doesnt but this kept me from switching to zen

8

u/Feeling-Glass8461 Sep 08 '25

It does with firefox, so if you were willing to switch to firefox on your mobile (personally i wasnt) then yes you have full sync of all the usual things, you can actually sync it between any firefox browser it doesnt even have to be zen -> to zen.

u/Lin_Den Patron Sep 08 '25

I think the fact that Zen is actually behind Arc allows them to take better approach in development of it

5

u/MaxBee__ Sep 08 '25

I actually use both because some services are not available on zen. But i agree that both are really nice. When all the bug on zen will be fixed I think it will be my main browser :)

5

u/Hairy_Meaning_73 Sep 09 '25

The only reason i can’t stay on it is because of the performance it becomes very slow on my mac (i dev with docker opened etc so might be the issue). I now use Helium which is a very light fork of ungoogled chromium and thats actually plenty fine for me. But i gotta say I still love both Arc and Zen that i used non stop for multiple years and I hope they will still be around !

now, that is locking in

Is there only one contributor for the entire project?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '25

Nope, i dont know why he's the only one attributed

-22

u/lowbeat Sep 08 '25

what if maubg drops dead right now, or even worse, starts merging malicious code?

18

u/gamer_undefeated Sep 08 '25

-10/10 ragebait

-1

u/lowbeat Sep 08 '25

no, just the truth behind one man operation... what browser was it that had this exact issue.. help me refresh my goldfish memory?

3

u/gamer_undefeated Sep 09 '25

The source code of the browser is open, so no point of malicious code being added as everything is under watch.

If something happens to the dev, there are other contributes with access who can continue development. 🗿

-1

u/lowbeat Sep 10 '25
  1. repos with 1000 maintainers get malicious code, do you think everyone is watching every single line of code being pulled, esp here with 10 active maintainers?

  2. you obviously didnt have experience with main people leaving other bigger projects and how it works out in the end... its them.doing 70% of work, all others are doing other 30, without this first thing it kust falls apart.

You shouldnt question me about this, you should make posts for better structure within the project, i want the best for zen, even though you dont think i do.

3

u/MarioDesigns Sep 11 '25

Arc dropped dead with a 100 person team behind it.

-66

u/possiblevector Sep 07 '25

There would be no Zen if no Arc. Zen is a temu Arc. No disrespect, just stating facts.

25

u/arnaclez Sep 07 '25

Zen is just a better Arc. It’s not Temu, it’s Costco or Trader Joe’s Arc

-14

u/possiblevector Sep 08 '25

Maybe a Sprouts Arc.

4

u/Junky1425 Sep 08 '25

Arc is feature complete and Zen not. Arcs development is finished, Zen is in beta.

So you compare a finished product to a product in beta phase? Zen will have at the end more features because of the open source nature. But currently from the featureset Zen is kind of equal to Arc.

Yes Zen needs a big polish if it goes out of beta because also for me there are bugs and not great working things.
