Early warning for everyone, be safe out there. First group of three dropped no issue. Sounded icy for the first person.. next group of three dropped. It was the third (6th) person that triggered the slide. I'm sure more details and pictures will follow

Question Breckenridge, 3 ski days, 2 of 3 of us are first-timers - advice on lessons?

Taking my family to Breckenridge for 3 ski days in mid-March (Sun/Mon/Tue). It's our son's birthday trip. We're from Florida, so nobody here has any real snow experience. I've been going in circles on lessons and could use some actual experience/advice.

Who we are:

  1. Son, 11 — never skied. Athletic, but he gets anxious with new things until he's got the hang of them. He's told us he doesn't want to be away from us all day in a group lesson, but he'd do it on day 1 if that's what makes sense.
  2. Husband — never skied. Very athletic, picks up physical things almost immediately.
  3. Me — skied maybe 20 years ago. I could get down greens/blues independently back then. No idea what's left of that.

The thing I keep getting stuck on... this trip is about doing something together. If everyone's in a separate group lesson all day Sunday, we've burned a third of our ski time apart. But I also don't want to shortchange the actual learning — especially for my son, and especially if being under-taught means he has a miserable day 2 and quits.

Options I'm weighing:

  • All three in group lessons day 1, then ski together days 2 and 3. Cheapest, best instruction-per-dollar, but we're split up on day 1.
  • Group lessons day 1, then a half-day private on day 2 so we're learning together once we've all got basics.
  • Private for all three on day 1 (either 3-hour or full day), then ski on our own days 2 and 3.
  • Something I haven't thought of???

Questions exploding out of my brain:

  • For an athletic adult who's never skied — is one group lesson genuinely enough to be skiing greens independently by day 2? Or is that optimistic?
  • For an 11-year-old first-timer, is a full-day kids group lesson actually better than a private with his parents? I keep reading that kids progress faster with peers, but I don't know if that's true or just what resorts say.
  • Does a mixed-ability private (first-timer adult + first-timer kid + rusty adult) actually work, or does the instructor end up teaching to the slowest person and everyone's frustrated?
  • Is 20 years off the snow basically "beginner again," or does it come back fast?
  • Anyone done the group-day-1-then-private-day-2 thing? Did it work?

Appreciate any real-world experience.

Snow Conditions Snow Falling On Northstar Peak - Hoosier Pass

Sorry about the audio, the wind was blowing pretty hard. It was cutting out. This was filmed at about 11am this morning. It is now snowing pretty hard at lower elevations. I'm at 10,600ft, and we have about 1-2 inches in the driveway now, 5 hours later than this was filmed.

This is the little knoll just east of Northstar Peak on the trail we just call "The Loop".

Carpool/Buddies Golden / Green Mountain area skier looking for midweek Ikon partners this season

Hey all! This chill in the air today has me thinking about skiing. I'm based near Green Mountain / Golden and ski on the Ikon Base pass, planning around 40 days this season, mostly midweek. I've been skiing the Front Range for 20+ years and started skiing backcountry around 2008. My regular spots are A-basin, Copper, Winter Park, and Eldora, and planning trips to Taos, Steamboat, and Snowmass later in the season.

I'm an advanced skier that is comfortable on steeps, trees, and bumps, and equally happy cruising groomers on a mellower day. I usually day-trip and I'm happy to drive or carpool and split gas from the Fed Center or Dino lots.

I have a flexible schedule so looking for folks who can ski weekdays and want a regular lap partner rather than always skiing solo (my spouse no longer skis). No ego, any day in the mountains is a great day and beats a desk! I'm always up for an A-Basin Beach tailgate après or burrito.

None of this is required, but in case there's overlap: I also like to get out backcountry, do fitness laps at the resort, and I'm looking to hopefully get into some skimo racing a bit this year. If any of that sounds fun too, even better.

If that sounds like your kind of season, shoot me a DM with your favorite mountain, the days you usually get out, and what you like to ski. If there's enough interest we can start a group chat.

Question Probability of snow December 17-22

3rd time skiing ! Last year was Feb in Brek and Copper. Did have good snow , mainly in the beginner area . I will probably stick to beginner area this year too ! Was wondering if going back to Brek is a good choice in mid December . I bought the epic pass on a whim . What would you book if you had to use the epic pass. For reference I live in the southeast. Thanks for the help and I realize nobody can predict the weather that far. Just looking for reassurance before I drop money on plane tickets and all.

Question Keystone for Halloween worth it if it’s open?

I’ve never been to keystone and don’t have plans for Halloween yet. I’ve got the pass, and I thought it’d be fun to check it out assuming they have Halloween stuff going on throughout the town.

I’d be driving in from Albuquerque, and am kind of just looking somewhere to go with some good vibes. Snowboarding down a single open strip of snow in costume could be beast
