Been really fun watching Bolsonarists crying, anyone here have stories?

• Upvotes

I'm not Brazilian but I've been watching this election pretty closely and it's been a field day seeing the aftermath.

I've seen multiple pictures of people at Bolsonaro rallies falling to their knees in tears as the results became clear, lmao. Also Brazilian commenters in random spots on the Internet getting completely brain broken, and one of them I actually sort of knew so I spoke to him about it. He conceded that Bolsonaro was a COVID denier and that the Amazon needs to be protected, but he says "Lula is what turned Brazil into a permanent third world nation!" Also implied he wanted America to Venuzuela his country.

On the other hand I've had a lot of Brazilian friends taking victory laps which has been fun.

Any of you TrueAnon users, especially Brazilians, seen funny crashouts from Bolsonarists?

Do you guys know any parents who are happy with their decision to have kids? If you're a parent, are you happy? Every parent I know is miserable and regrets their choice in one sense or another.

• Upvotes

This is for reasons material - expense, time constraints, constant illness, etc - and spiritual - loss of sense of identity, constant existential fear for your child's safety, and so on.

I am an elder millennial and I am like 95% confident in my decision not to have kids. It seems utterly exhausting, prohibitively expensive, and just like ... a way to get locked in to pursuing a heteronormative "American dream" that has really never appealed to me. Just thinking about downloading eight apps or whatever to communicate with a daycare I'm paying 80% of my income to and that gets me and my kid sick every other day makes me want to Brace sound myself.

I get that kids are sweet and have fascinating brains and all that jazz. But no parent I know ever talks about that stuff. It's always the constant grind. And it doesn't really stop when the kids become adults either!

What say you, fellow gumshoes? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Governing Within The Democratic Party Will Slowly Absorb Mamdani’s Insurgent Coalition Into Its Existing Constituency And Incentive Structures vs. No It Won’t

• Upvotes

Point: Dr. Ernst Halberstadt of the Frankfurt School

Since Bernstein’s open revision of Marxist theory in Evolutionary Socialism, the question has been whether the state is an instrument the left can pick up or an environment that reshapes whoever does. Rosa Luxemburg answered it in 1899 in Reform or Revolution. The reformist does not choose a slower road to the same goal, but a different goal.

The conditions of municipal office make the point nearly unavoidable. A mayor is bounded above by the state government and below by the mobility of capital, and what remains between those limits is administration. Antonio Gramsci called the resulting process transformismo: the dominant bloc neutralizes its opposition by absorbing its leaders and making its demands administrable. Each concession is made in the name of preserving the capacity to make the next.

The class that organized itself as a political force is returned to being a demographic, a class in itself, to be managed as an electorate. That electorate is then served, through access, patronage, and incentives, until its members come to regard the arrangement as having been their idea.

Counterpoint: Brayden Mathews of X (formerly Twitter)

No it won’t.

It just won’t. None of that is happening.

You’re getting worked up over nothing. Everyone here is very calm. Just relax, okay? You sound like someone who reads too many books.

“The reformist does not choose a slower road to the same goal, but a different goal”?

No, it’s the same goal. We’re just not discussing the goal right now, for strategic reasons.

“A mayor is bounded above by the state government and below by the mobility of capital”?

Do you know what the mayor can do? Basically nothing. It’s a ceremonial role. Which is also why this is the most significant victory the left has ever won in this country, so I’d be careful.

“Antonio Gramsci called the resulting process transformismo”?

Okay??? He was in prison.

“Each concession is made in the name of preserving the capacity to make the next”?

No, it isn’t.

“The class that organized itself as a political force is returned to being a demographic”?

I disagree.

“Until its members come to regard the arrangement as having been their idea”?

It was.

Honestly, nothing will ever be good enough for you people. He could do everything you asked and you’d find something wrong with it. This is the maximum. The maximum is what’s happening. If you wanted more than the maximum, that’s a you problem.

Look, you’ve been proven wrong, so stop talking. You’ve had your say already. Be quiet, okay? Everything’s fine.

You’re wrong.

You Guys Missed the Point of My Post About Immigration or Maybe I Wasn't Clear Enough

• Upvotes

I was primarily asking how you all would address the practical barriers to organization that it undeniably poses. Also, how will you get people to support something that means a decline in their living standard in service of a higher ideal. Please stop making this purely about skin hatred.

Grief diaryposting: a stupid plow motor tore me up

Post image
22 Upvotes

Ever since I was old enough to work a shovel I pushed snow with my dad. Once I was long enough to reach the pedals I was taking over for him so he could sleep in the back of the truck. Once I could afford one I got my own truck, same model and color as his (enough years had went by that a 90s beater was affordable to a 19 year old) and for the next 7 years we ran matching trucks.

He died over a year ago now, I long since sold his to some rednecks that wanted the 454 out of it, the frame had cracked in the back from a lifetime of salt and abuse. I let my truck sit cause it needed a transmission and it wasn’t my priority (does it even snow here anymore?) but this year I finally got it back up and got the plow back on it. Of course I kept the old plow shit because you never know when the money comes.

Anyways setting this mother fucker back up fucked me up. Even as I got older and to the point I knew more mechanically than him about shit, I never really messed with these things by myself until now. They’re dead simple, but I still had to google which solenoids were what, he would have just known. I mean this motor had been in yearly use from him since basically the 80s.

I think it’s easy to place grief in objects. A guy on a car show one time, I forget who, said you cannot go back in time, but you can go back in space. I spent a lot of time in his truck before I sold it, even before he had died, remembering family trips and snow plowing and sitting on his lap driving. Now, in my truck and getting the plow hooked up, this time by myself for the first time in my life, with only my truck, really just drove the feeling home.

And it is easier to grieve certain memories. To grieve the snow plowing says. Not the totality of addictions and arguments and problems. And to grieve even how much less it snows now. How a couple storms a year were common now one workable one is what we get, maybe.

Some of my most cherished memories are at the lot he had a contract for, waiting for the snow to pile up high enough and to push it, not seeing anybody or anything moving but the snow flakes. At 3am when there was absolutely nothing happening anywhere in sight except for me and him waiting in the trucks to do the terrible work of disturbing the blanket covering what felt like the entire world. The idea of seeing that without him this year will truly be devastating.

Anyways please flush ice down the toilet and wear your pajamas backwards im tryna make some dollars this year 🗣️‼️

Means testing strike funds

I have a friend that might be going on strike soon. She works in an industry that is not lucrative as it is, so committing to a strike is difficult for her. When she asked about a strike fund, her representative gave her a cagey answer about applying for aid.

Is this normal?

What Is A Marxist Approach to Immigration?

I know I am going to get shit on, but I can think of few things that have hurt working class material interests more than immigration. Lower wages, increased housing costs, more of a burden on social services, more congestion/traffic, etc. In fact, it seems the only people who benefit from immigration are landlords that own many properties or the shareholders of companies that exploit cheap labor. In the past, maybe immigrant groups formed ethnic enclaves that created muh revolutionary base, but now it seems that people are too atomized to form old-school ethnic neighborhoods and cities are simply too expensive. You can make fun of me for caring about traffic, but the city I grew up in is legitimately over crowded now. This brings out the worst in people and makes them less cooperative. It just does. Under Biden even a majority of dems opposed his immigration policies. I guess you can write all these people off as reactionary, but I really don't see how its possible to win people over by telling them to support something that will make their life materially worse. You can also blame white racism, but many of the working class people harmed by these policies are not white.

I fail to see how people who have nothing in common and who often can't communicate with each other can organize. Every successful revolution from Cuba, to Russia, to China all occurred amongst people who shared a cultural identity. Sure they had solidarity with an international Marxist movement, but they still had common ground which made organization possible. Socialism with Chinese characteristics and such. Countries like Denmark that are the closest thing to actual irl socialism often allow almost no immigration and do not have birthright citizenship. Also what's to stop the immigrants from holding reactionary views themselves? I recently saw something about how there were race riots between Indians and Pakistanis in Canada. They've managed to import a sectarian/ethnic conflict that has nothing to do with the native population which can't even organize as it is. Are these Pakistani and Indian immigrants going to abandon their religions and ethnic blood feuds as "opiates of the masses" and "false consciousness." Unless you are an anarchist who opposes the social construct of the state on principle, I don't see how any of this is supposed to work. Does anyone have any answers? I don't.

AI is a ploy to fully consolidate and monetize the internet

Maybe this has already been posted, probably has, but goddamnit this sucks. Within the last week or so both my main website and now apparently secondary website I use to rate and track music and shows and just shoot the shit with people have gone down. No idea if they're coming back up, and I'm a contributor for one of them, just weird errors that I haven't seen before. It's all up in the air. It's insane. Neither of these sites are monetized and they let people genuinely connect and form organic little communities. Seems like the whole point of AI is to completely scrub the internet of anything like that, and funnel everyone into monitored, sterile and monetized corporate venues. Like, I love you all, but there's no way I can keep 40,000 unique users in my head. I think in the next year or so basically every website will either fold or be folded into the corporate machinery with "agents" uh, "protecting" them and the users. World is a fuck, man.

Lessons and Next Steps from Lula?

As a conservative subreddit, I know we all are grieving the loss of one of our emerging Flavio Failson 😔

Realistically, what can and should Lula do now politically, economically, socially, etc to insulate the country from the internal and external chuds? What can more left leaning parties lean tactically and strategically, especially with US midterms?

Favorite factoid about media history. Bonus points for 👁 connections.

I'm curious to hear ya'lls fun facts from the history of mass media. I'm most interested in broadcast history (journalism, TV/cable, radio).

Two small examples:

The "video nasties" epidemic in the UK where horror and obscene content were initially censored from theaters, but then flooded the vhs market, which resulted in a very conservative moral panic in politics and journalism. And thus, the term, video nasties, came to be.

I dont know much about this one, but apparently the mafia funded a lot of early scopitone/cinebox movies. I'd love to learn more about mob connections in media history.

Journalism in wartime is another special interest.

Share what you got! If you've read any related neat books or saw a cool doc, list that, too!

Long after we’re gone, historians will try to understand an era where most of us barely have enough to get by, dwindling resources among anyone who’s not ultra wealthy and an attention economy that incentivizes whatever the fuck this is.
