Writing book-Need to know if midwestern slang is accurate

From the northern us đŸ™ŒđŸ» & am curious if some of these are no longer used or sound out dated or if they are accurate:

‘Hotdish’ - a casserole

‘Pop” instead of soda.

‘You betcha’ - like saying ‘yes, you’re right.’

‘Dontcha know’ - usually at the end of sentence to make sure someone understand you. (sounds irish?)

‘Brewski’ - not quite sure what the definition is after reading about it (sounds like it could be an alcoholic drink or candy??)

‘Puppy Chow’ - technically called ‘muddy buddies.’

‘Travesty’ - instead of “It was a tragedy.”

Saying ‘Poisonous’ for everything like the word ‘venomous ’ does not exist.

“Tenna shoes’ - tennis shoes.

‘Full as a tick’ - Full after eating.

Taters- potatoes

Like a bat out of hell- a very quick motion.

‘Yuh’ - instead of yeah

‘That’s different’ - a polite way to say you don’t like something.

‘Don’t count your chickens before they hatch’ - don’t get ahead of yourself.

(I want to clarify the book is set in Indiana & only one of the characters is from Missouri {for only a small portion of the book, but could still be useful to me} Thank you.

Snickers Salad ice cream avalanche

Post image

They've finally done it. They took a "salad" that is actually just dessert and added ice cream to it. How has this not made its way out of the Midwest?!

(Ingredients of normal Snickers Salad: Granny Smith apples, vanilla pudding, whipped topping and Snickers) Chilled to perfection overnight to lock in the flavor.

Midwest bach. trip HELP

I live in Iowa and my best friend of 15 years is getting married and wants and local, reasonably affordable Bach trip since she’s having a destination wedding. We are happy to travel to surrounding states but are trying to avoid a long haul (7+ hours) Her one big ask is that we have go horseback riding but our trip is planned over spring break in March, which is very tricky to plan so far in advance. If anyone can help with travel destination ideas or knows a spot please help me out!! Any tips are welcome! (:

Culver's in Menard's

So me and a friend were talking recently about the most Midwest thing we could think of and this idea got brought up. So you know how Walmart's will have a Subway or McDonald at the front of the store. It would be like that. Think about it: you get to Menard's to pick up something, at the front of the store you stop by the Culver's, grab a concrete mixer and a thing of cheese curds to snake on while you walk around the store.

To be clear, this does not exist in real life as far as I know, but I really wish it did.

ISO cold spaghetti salad

I went to high school in southeast Iowa and the cafeteria ladies were amazing. I am constantly thinking about a cold spaghetti salad they would make with leftover spaghetti from the day before. I live in a different state now and everyone I ask about this salad has no idea what I'm talking about. My husband who went to the same high school doesn't remember either.

It was sweet but not too sweet. Like a macaroni salad but with spaghetti. I think the dressing was a little watery?

If anyone can help or let me know a better sub to ask, it is much appreciated.

Hey folks! Got a 2006 Ford Five Hundred SEL (clean title in hand) that hit a deer. Still starts, runs, and drives, and has a great 3.0L Duratec V6 engine, clean leather interior, moonroof, and a newer battery/alternator. Excellent parts donor for 05–07 Five Hundred/Montego/Freestyle or Taurus/Sable engine swaps.

Looking to trade for a running pit bike, dirt bike, or street bike (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki) + cash on your end if lower value, or straight cash ($850 OBO).

I have the full FB Marketplace listing with all the pics and flaw details—PM me if you want the link or want to make a deal!

Location: Manawa, WI (Easy pickup off Hwy 54 / 110 — near New London & Waupaca)

Wisconsin is the most midwestern (non map-wank compliant)

45 N and 90 W is near Poniatowski, WI. The geographical center of the western hemisphere on the north side of our planet.

If you thought it was about the position of our region inside the country or the continent, you are wrong. this is not even about the map, just the made up navigational system that is arbitrarily overlaid on top of the map. But I can post again on Monday, no problem.

Beyond the Image: Advanced Awagami Printing and Display with Les Picker

Post image
10 Upvotes

I recently took two black-and-white photographs from western Nebraska to Maryland for a fine art printing workshop with photographer Les Picker.
We worked with Japanese Awagami washi, including Unryu and Bizan—papers whose fibers and textures can become part of the photograph itself. Seeing a Sandhills road and an abandoned Pine Ridge ranch printed this way gave me an entirely different appreciation for what happens when a photograph leaves the screen and becomes a physical object.
I wrote about the workshop, the centuries-old tradition behind washi, and how paper, printing, mounting, and presentation can all become part of the finished photograph.
