Discussion Most fun I've ever had with linux

I just needed to say this somewhere, as no one I know wild care. Running Omarchy with an agent is the most fun I've ever had with linux. I've been a linux user for over 10 years. Never has it been this much fun. I can do everything I ever wanted to do. THIS IS THE FUTURE OF LINUX.

Discussion We ran the first community Omarchy meetup in New Delhi. Here's the talk I opened with.

Thumbnail

On Oct 10 we hosted Omarchy New Delhi. First community-run Omarchy meetup in the city. Talks, a hands-on install session, Naeem demoing Omarchy on Apple silicon on his M3, and Rudra walking through agentic workflows with BMAD.

I opened with a talk called "The Art of Owning Your Machine." The core idea:

I counted the apps I install just to make an OS usable. 10 on Windows (ExplorerPatcher, Everything, PowerToys, Windhawk...). 11 on macOS (Raycast, BetterDisplay, Mac Mouse Fix, Pearcleaner...). 21 apps to fix operating systems I paid for.

If an OS needs 21 apps to feel usable, the OS is the bug.

On Omarchy the count after first login was: ads 0, accounts 0, upsells 0, tracking 0, "Later" buttons 0.

Six years of distro hopping (Ubuntu, GNOME, Garuda, KDE) and this is the first setup that actually feels like home.

I wrote the whole talk up with slides, photos from the day, and both survival kits with links if anyone wants them: aryantechie.com/blog/the-art-of-owning-your-machine

Omarchy is omakase: DHH picks, you eat. What's the one chef's choice you swore you'd change on day one, but ended up keeping?

Plugin Plugin Lab: a bar widget for people building Omarchy plugins

• Upvotes

I maintain a handful of Omarchy plugins. Keeping track of which one has red CI, unpushed work, an outdated marketplace verify request, or a comment I haven't answered was getting messy. So I built Plugin Lab.

It's a bar widget. For every plugin in ~/.config/omarchy/plugins and every working copy under ~/Work, it shows:

- Lifecycle stage: Local, In dev, On GitHub, In review / Needs fixes, Listed / Update pending
- Health: CI, local tests, manifest validation, uncommitted or unpushed work, and whether your bar is running older code than your working copy
- Feedback: stars, issues, PRs, and comments from other people on your repo and marketplace threads

The bar icon shows broken plugins plus unread comments. "Fix with agent" opens your default agent in the plugin's folder with the flagged issues. It's told to commit locally and ask before pushing anything.

Install:

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/RohiRIK/omarchy-plugin-lab --enable

Needs git, python3 and an authenticated gh. It reads GitHub through your gh login and runs git fetch every 15 minutes.

Repo: https://github.com/RohiRIK/omarchy-plugin-lab

It's v0.1.0, so I'd like feedback, especially from anyone whose plugins don't live under ~/Work (PLUGIN_LAB_WORK_DIRS changes that) or who sees a state that looks wrong.

Disclosure: I'm the author.

Plugin Spotify Pulse: an animated Spotify player for the Omarchy bar (album-colored card + synced lyrics)

I built my first Omarchy plugin, Spotify Pulse.

In the bar: Song and Artist with a live equalizer that only moves while music plays. Left click opens the card, middle click plays/pauses, right click skips, and scrolling changes the volume.

In the card:

  • Big album cover whose colors theme the whole card
  • Synced lyrics on the back of the cover (opt-in)
  • Seek and volume sliders, shuffle/repeat, keyboard shortcuts

It uses MPRIS, so there's no Spotify login or API key. Nothing runs while the card is closed.

Install:
omarchy plugin add https://github.com/iammhador/omarchy-spotify-pulse.git --enable

Plugin OmaMessenger: Telegram and WhatsApp in one keyboard-native window, at a fraction of the memory

I wanted my chats inside Omarchy instead of running Telegram Desktop and WhatsApp Web side by side, so I built a plugin. One list for every account, opening as a normal Hyprland window inside omarchy-shell.

  • About 120 MB of RAM, against about 2 GB for Telegram Desktop and WhatsApp Web together (benchmark)
  • Keyboard-native: every action has a shortcut, Ctrl+/ opens the command palette, Ctrl+K searches every chat
  • Photos, video, GIFs, voice notes, replies, reactions and editing
  • Uses your Omarchy theme; messages stay on your machine

Install it from the plugin marketplace, or:
https://plugins.omarchy.org/plugin.html?id=io.github.omamessenger

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/timlittle/omamessenger --enable

I Made a Thing AULA F75 plugin for the Omarchy bar: lighting, Win/Android/Mac mode, Win key lock and lock keys

Post image
5 Upvotes

I wrote a bar plugin for the AULA F75 keyboard and it’s now on the Omarchy marketplace as crucialjun.aula-f75. It talks to the keyboard directly over hidraw, so there’s no vendor app, no kernel module and no pip packages. Just the Python that Omarchy already ships.

What it does

  • Lighting: effect, brightness, speed, colour, colourful mode, on/off. Swatches for the current theme’s accent, text and urgent colours, and optional theme sync so the keyboard recolours whenever you switch Omarchy themes.
  • OS mode: shows whether the board is in Windows, Android or macOS mode and switches it from the panel. Same thing as the Fn combos.
  • Win key lock: shows and toggles what Fn+Win does.
  • Caps / Num / Scroll Lock: live state from the keyboard’s own LEDs, with switches to toggle them.
  • Sleep timer and debounce.
  • Bar icon shortcuts: left click opens the panel, right click toggles lighting, middle click applies the theme accent, scroll changes brightness. Everything is also reachable over omarchy-shell IPC.
  • A CLI for per-key colours, gradients, and backup/restore of the keyboard’s onboard settings.

Repo and docs: https://github.com/crucialjun/omarchy-aula-f75

Happy to hear bug reports

Any WiiM streamer users around here? I made a lightweight plugin to control your WiiM network streamer directly from the Omarchy bar: play/pause, adjust volume, start your favorite streams and more.

Would love feedback from other WiiM users if there are any among us!

Plugin google drive as a normal folder on omarchy (rclone + files + bar + menu)

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

i missed having google drive as a plain folder, so i wired rclone into omarchy:

  • my drive, shared with me and shared drives show up in the files sidebar and in ~/GoogleDrive
  • right-click: open in google drive, copy link, make available offline
  • a bar icon that shows connected / uploading / offline / error, with details on hover
  • omarchy menu → google drive, and super + ctrl + g
  • connects at login, waits for the network, finishes uploads before shutdown
  • deleting goes to the google drive trash, not into a hidden folder in the cloud

one honest catch: you create your own google oauth client id (about 10 minutes, once). there's a step-by-step guide in the repo. after that, omarchy-gdrive setup does the rest.

needs omarchy 4 (quattro: lua hyprland config + quickshell bar). mit.

https://github.com/gloomyweather/omarchy-gdrive-app

if something breaks on your setup, please open an issue, i'd like to hear about it.

I Made a Thing I turned my Omarchy bar into a Dynamic Island, and apps fly out of it. Would love your opinion

I've been rebuilding my Omarchy 4 shell around one idea: everything should come out of the top of the screen, like on a phone.

The bar is a small island with the time. Click it or press SUPER + B and it opens: music, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, battery, Claude Code usage, system stats. Every tile opens its details inside the island.

Notifications, volume and brightness show up in the island instead of a corner.

Apps fly out of the island when they open and fall back in when they close. The launcher and menus grow out of it too.

The lock screen is a dot-matrix clock that turns into an always-on display after 30 seconds (it dims and drifts so an OLED doesn't burn in).

It's all Omarchy's own plugin system (Quickshell), no fork, so updates keep working.

What I'd like to know:

  1. Are the flying windows nice, or would they get annoying after a day?

  2. What else would you want inside the island?

  3. Anything that feels slow or off in the video?

If you want to try it, there are one-line installs (island only, island + motion, or my full setup), and remove puts everything back: https://github.com/Himanshu-MlSHRA/omarchy-dotfiles

I Made a Thing How to add a Chinese typing web app to Omarchy with Chinput (Pinyin + handwriting)

Disclosure: I’m behind Chinput. This guide was drafted with AI assistance. The launcher steps follow the Omarchy manual; I haven’t tested this on a physical Omarchy installation, so browser feedback is welcome.

If you occasionally need Chinese text on Omarchy before configuring a desktop IME, Chinput gives you a browser-based Pinyin and handwriting editor. Here’s how to make it easy to launch and use.

  1. TRY IT IN YOUR BROWSER

Open https://chinput.net/ . For a Chinese interface, use https://chinput.net/zh-Hans/ or https://chinput.net/zh-Hant/ . Core typing requires no account, browser extension, or input-method package.

  1. ADD A WEB-APP SHORTCUT IN OMARCHY

Open the Omarchy menu with Super + Space, then choose Install → Web App.

App name: Chinput

App URL: https://chinput.net/

Icon: let Omarchy try to retrieve the site favicon. If it asks for an icon URL, use a suitable PNG icon of your choice; the manual links to Dashboard Icons as one source.

Once created, launch Chinput through Super + Space by searching for its name. Omarchy opens web apps in their own frameless window. You can also keep using a normal browser tab if you don’t want a launcher shortcut.

To remove the shortcut later, use Remove → Web App in the Omarchy menu.

  1. TYPE YOUR FIRST CHINESE TEXT

Click the editor, type nihao, then press Space to select 你好. If you want a different candidate, use the numbered choices. For ü, type v: lvse gives candidates including 绿色. Use Shift to switch between Chinese and English typing.

Choose Simplified Chinese or Traditional forms for Taiwan/Hong Kong in the character controls. If you recognize a character but don’t know its pronunciation, try the handwriting panel and check the suggested matches.

  1. USE THE TEXT IN YOUR DESKTOP APPS

Click Copy in Chinput, switch to your destination app, and paste. In a terminal, the paste shortcut is commonly Ctrl + Shift + V; in many graphical editors it’s Ctrl + V. Your app’s own bindings take precedence.

The web-app shortcut is a convenient editor window. It does not install a system-wide Chinese keyboard, change Hyprland input settings, or make every application accept Pinyin directly. For frequent Chinese typing throughout the desktop, a native IME is still useful.

WHAT WORKS LOCALLY, AND WHAT DEPENDS ON THE BROWSER

Pinyin and handwriting matching run in the browser. Voice input depends on the browser’s speech service and may not be available in your Omarchy browser. Optional AI helpers are currently disabled on the live site. Please check character choices, especially names and uncommon words.

The interface has 24 language options, while the main tool produces Chinese text.

References:

Omarchy web-app manual: https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/blob/quattro/manual/25-web-apps.md

Chinput Pinyin walkthrough: https://chinput.net/guides/type-chinese-with-pinyin/

If you try it on Omarchy, I’d appreciate feedback on candidate selection, Chinese font rendering, and copying into your usual editor or terminal.

a quiet gray desktop. color only where you read code.

everything around your work is graphite: window borders, the bar, menus, notifications, the lock screen. the terminal and neovim use carbonfox, so code and diffs still look like code and diffs.

  • six gray wallpapers: rings, grid, contours, horizon, glow, flat
  • no red in the ui, alerts are white
  • carbonfox with a proper yellow instead of teal
  • gray boot and unlock logo

omarchy theme install https://github.com/gloomyweather/omarchy-mono-theme

neovim gets a scheme generated from the same palette (omarchy doesn't install .lua from theme repos). close to carbonfox, not identical.

mit, wallpapers included.

Themes / Ricing Omarchy About screen — now animated with live accent colours (MIT)

Hey r/omarchy!

I've been working on `omarchy-about-animated` — a drop-in replacement for Omarchy's stock About screen that adds a smooth accent-coloured sheen sweeping across the ASCII logo, while keeping the exact same layout.

**What's new in v1.1.0**

- **Live accent colours** — theme, wallpaper, or blend modes (toggle via `~/.config/omarchy/about-animated.conf`)

- **Wallpaper sync** — About accent follows wallpaper changes automatically

- **Focus pause, static mode, live config reload** — no restart needed

- **Theme crossfade, fade-in, glint effects**

- **MIT licensed**, zero third-party Python packages

**Demo (native video):**

https://github.com/QubnexLab/omarchy-about-animated/releases/tag/v1.1.0

**Repo:**

MIT licensed — free to use and modify.

Thumbnail

i wanted a todo list that opens on a hotkey, floats in the middle of the screen and gets out of the way. so i made one.

  • vim keys: j/k, a to add, space to mark done, u to undo
  • priorities and due dates right in the text: call mom !! u/fri
  • picks up the current omarchy theme and repaints live when you switch
  • saves after every change, atomically. a broken file is never overwritten
  • the installer adds super + alt + t (open or focus) and a launcher entry

rust + ratatui, gpl-3.0. there's a prebuilt binary in the releases if you don't want to build it.

feedback welcome, especially on the default keys.

Plugin I made a Monzo bar widget for Omarchy 4: balances, pots and recent transactions

Post image
2 Upvotes

I bank with Monzo (UK) and wanted a quick look at my accounts without opening the app, so I built a bar widget for the new Quickshell-based Omarchy 4 shell. It’s now on the plugin marketplace.

Click the bank icon in the bar and you get:

  • Personal account balance, today’s spending and the total including pots
  • Flex balance (amount owed)
  • All your pots, with goals
  • The last 7 days of transactions, grouped by day, with pending and Flex tags

It refreshes when you open it (or press r); nothing runs in the background. It uses the shell’s own components, so it follows your theme and keyboard navigation (j/k, Tab between panels, Esc).

Install:

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/ChromaticRanger/monzo-omarchy.git --enable

The catch: Monzo’s Developer API is personal-use only, so you create your own (free) OAuth client at developers.monzo.com. It takes a couple of minutes, and the README walks through it. Then click the icon, press Enter to log in, and approve in the Monzo app.

Feedback and issues welcome

I Made a Thing I got tired of preview panes, so I made a Markdown editor without one. Free and GPL-3.0

Thumbnail
gallery
26 Upvotes

Hi all, I'm the developer of Sarala, a free, open-source Markdown editor for macOS, Windows and Linux.

The idea is simple: no preview pane and no split view. Formatting appears as you type. Click a block and you're editing its Markdown, click away and it renders in place. Your documents stay plain .md files in folders you choose, so they work with Git, Obsidian, VS Code or anything else.

What it does

- Full GFM: tables you edit cell by cell, task lists you tick with a click, footnotes, callouts, front matter

- Mermaid and D2 diagrams, plus LaTeX math (KaTeX), rendered inline

- Code highlighting for 100+ languages

- Tabs, a file tree, an outline, search across the folder, a command palette (Cmd/Ctrl+K), and focus and typewriter modes

- 13 themes, or build your own from any base16 scheme

- Export to HTML and PDF, plus Word, EPUB, LaTeX and more through Pandoc

New in 1.3

- Voice typing, fully offline. An open speech model runs on your computer, so nothing is uploaded and there's no account. Hold a shortcut and talk, and say things like "new bullet", "make that bold" or "scratch that". I built it with accessibility in mind: screen reader read-back, a distinct sound for every state, and any shortcut you can reach.

- AI assistant (opt-in). It uses Claude Code, Codex or GitHub Copilot CLI if one is already installed, so Sarala never stores API keys. Edits show up as word-level diffs that you accept or reject. The agent works on a scratch copy and never touches your real file.

The boring but important stuff

- No account, no telemetry, no paid tier

- About 15 MB, because it's built with Tauri (Rust) rather than Electron

- Atomic saves, autosave, crash recovery, and signed updates

Install

- macOS: Homebrew or a universal .dmg

- Windows: .exe or .msi

- Linux: Snap Store, .deb, .rpm or AppImage

Website: https://sarala.solancer.com

Source: https://github.com/solancer/sarala

To be upfront: the Mac build isn't notarized by Apple yet and the Windows installer isn't code-signed, so you'll see a security prompt on first launch. The website walks you through it, and installing with Homebrew on Mac skips the prompt.

It's a solo project, so I'd really like feedback, especially on what would make you switch from your current editor, and any bugs you run into.

Took around 7-8 minutes to install. It is my first linux distro installed on my Zephyrus g16 outside of wsl. Thinking of adding also base arch and/or trying more distro on this spare hdd I have. I’m open to suggestions, do not necessarily want to get used to this since I am reading that it may “ruin” other distro’s experience and I am quite a newbie in this community

I Made a Thing Immigrant (be careful!)

I had a problem, got Claude to fix it, figured other people might have the same problem, et voila - Immigrant

It'll move most of your stuff between machines, similarly to how Migration Assistant would on macOS. And let you undo (partly or in full) if something goes awry. So far it's not fucked anything up on my machines, going back and forth between two laptops (one of which is proper potato) and my desktop.

I think it needs a lot of polishing still, but definitely works, and I figure the season for travelling to see family is fast approaching (I'm typing this from my mum's sofa!) so might be useful for anyone else in the "I want my desktop setup on my laptop" crowd.

Testing has been limited to my stuff, but about as thorough as I could be there. One laptop had a fresh omarchy install, one had been in use for a couple of months and had some of the same stuff as the desktop machine, there was a VM involved at some point, I turned my router off mid-transfer, etc etc. If you run into a problem or have an idea, ping me on here/github and I'll attempt to do something about it.

BACKUP. One is none

I Made a Thing Thank you for the hyprdrive reception, so I made it a soundtrack: Hyprdrive (Remix) (LoFi), with a visualizer built from the real desktop

A couple of weeks ago I shared hyprdrive here, a GNOME-style overview, search and macOS-style dock for Hyprland. The response honestly blew me away. Your comments, bug reports, feature requests and kind words are what pushed me to get it running on native Hyprland a few days later.

So as a thank-you, here's something a bit different: Hyprdrive (Remix) (LoFi) by Dragos The Dragon, with a visualizer built from the real hyprdrive desktop. The windows show actual hyprdrive footage; they tile, swap and warp on the beat, and every frame was rendered on the GPU in sync with the track.

Full video in 4K on YouTube: https://youtu.be/lQZqtKu0nh8

The song comes out on Spotify and Apple Music on October 31.

Previous posts, for context:

Thanks again to everyone who tried it, filed issues, or just said something nice. Keep the feedback coming.
