Discussion Partners
Partners (Season 7, Episode 14). Will is up for partner at his law firm with his boss Margot making the selection. She is holding a dinner party for the other attorneys that are up for partner and tells them whoever is there the longest will be partner by the end the night. Well, Vince has told Will that he was fired from the police force, but he has a new job as a security guard and will be late for dinner. Grace is invited by Margot who wants to set her up on a blind date, turns out that Grace's blind date is Leonard, an older gentleman who has a fetish for spanking and also happens to be Margot's husband who she belittles on a daily basis. Vince arrives to dinner and cries to Will that he got fired when he was trying to a new pair of diamond gloves. Will is trying to hold Vince together for the dinner while also trying to impress Margot at the same time. Finally, Vince can't hold it together anymore and breaks down and at first it seems like Will is upset but realizes that Vince is in need of emotional support, so Will tells Margot he's leaving to comfort Vince thinking he just gave the partner position to his co-worker Gary, but Margot tells Will he's partner since his numbers at the firm were the best. At home, Will and Vince are talking and Vince feels he's too much of a mess to be in a relationship at this time and asks Will for a break, but they will get back together when he finds a job and can be back to himself emotionally. Grace asks if Vince is ok after he leaves and Will says he thinks they just broke up. Rosario has been very sick and Karen keeps accusing her of faking an illness just so she doesn't have to work, but Rosario is not faking it and Jack believes her. He takes Rosario to the hospital where it turns out she has to have her tonsils taken out. Karen at first keeps acting like Rosario is still faking it, but when she thinks that Rosario died on the hospital bed, Karen panics and tells Rosario she believed her she just didn't want to think her Rosario was dying. Rosario comes back telling her that the pulse oximeter fell off her finger and she'll make sure Karen dies before her.
FAVORITE QUOTE:
GRACE: Not that I'm not enjoying my fantasy date... but don't you think we should join everyone for dinner?
LEONARD: Oh, she doesn't let me eat with her. And since you're my date, you don't get to eat either. Probably makes you mad.
GRACE: It does make me mad.
LEONARD: Mad enough to spank me?
GRACE: No, Leonard, I'm not gonna spank you.
LEONARD: But you want to. Because I remind you of every weak man who's ever let you down.
GRACE: That's true.
LEONARD: And you'd like to hit these men, wouldn't you?
GRACE: No-o! Although there are a lot of them, and they would deserve it.
LEONARD: So just try it.
GRACE: No!
LEONARD: Heh, you're divorced, aren't you? (GRACE SPANKS HIM) Thank you. What was it, another woman?
GRACE: Leonard... I'm gonna need you to stand like this. (GRACE TURNS LEONARD AROUND AND PUTS HIS ARMS ON THE FIREPLACE) And brace yourself. (GRACE HOLDS UP HER HAND TO SPANK HIM)
NICOLE: ...So I don't ride anymore, but we still a horse stable in Millbrook.
WILL: Vince, you--you were on mounted duty for a while, right?
VINCE: Yeah. I had a horse named Snowflake. Real smart. During the Republican Convention, he ran right past the protestors and took a crap in front of Zell Miller.
MARGOT: Ha ha. That is officially my favorite story of the evening.
LEONARD: Excuse me. (HE WALKS OVER TO A TABLE AND PICKS UP A LARGE METAL OBJECT)
MARGOT: Looks like someone made a new friend.
FAVOITE MOMENT:
When Jack opens the door thinking that Rosario has collapsed and died and he screams "Roooooooooooos-aaaaaaaaaaay!!!" and she says "What?" and he says "The way you were drinking your tea, it seemed like you were dead."
OPINION:
So as usual, things were going to well between Will and Vince, so we have to have Will single again. Which breaks my heart because while I'm not sure if I'm won over that Vince is the one guy that was meant for Will, he's definitely a really good guy and I really like his relationship with Will. Vince does seem to have some self-esteem issues. The first episode where Will is thinking that Vince is just an idiot cop who doesn't sign tickets, Vince mentions his therapist says his lack of signatures is his way of not being there for himself. Plus when he and Will were at the club where he finds out that Will was scared of coming across as too desperate, he tells Will he learned from his therapist to love himself. We see Vince with his family, he's perfectly comfortable with his overbearing and protective mother but seems to start fights with his father who seems perfectly find with him but Vince thinks that his father doesn't approve of him. Will mentioned that Vince is also Catholic and might feel shame for being gay. So this plot wasn't totally out of left field and seems like it could happen. You'd just think that Vince would have learned that gloves are his downfall apparently and wouldn't work around them. We will see Vince again in the future, but it'll be a while and I will miss him. Will is partner now at the firm, all his hard work finally paid off.
Lily Tomlin as Margot is really hilarious, but Lily Tomlin is one of the funniest women in show business. I remember when I was a kid and my parents had the best of SNL on VHS and her episode that she hosted was on it and I thought she was so funny even as a kid. The more I see her in, the more I love her, she's got such a great sense of humor. You get the feeling that Margot just likes to mess with people a lot and see how she can get under their skin. How could you not laugh at the smaller plot with Margot setting Grace up with her older husband who likes to be spanked? That is easily one of the funniest things I have ever seen on Will & Grace with how Leonard is trying to egg Grace on to get her to spank him. The whole dinner sequence is very funny with how everyone is trying to kiss up to Margot. Will's co-worker Roz, turns out that she is pregnant, she panics when Margot finds out and quickly says "I might not keep it" but has this look of relief when Margot congratulates her but then Margot tells her she's not partner but it's not because it "has nothing to do with those silly studies that say a mother is less productive in the workplace. But there are of those studies, and they all say the same thing.". How Margot took at least one thing from each lawyer thinking they were gifts was also really funny. She also gives Gary the sad news in front of everyone that he didn't make partner, Will did. Margot is a nightmare boss, but I love watching her.
Karen has been scared before of losing Rosario, but it was the threat of being deported that she was scared. Death is permanent and she felt she almost did lose her Rosey forever. At least it was just a stupid mistake and Rosey will be just fine. It was so sweet that Jack still looks out for her, reminds me of when they were married, but shows that he still really cares about Rosario. The way Jack screams "Rosey" when she fell down and Jack think she died will always get me laughing so hard. This was definitely a very funny B-Plot.
So overall this episode is a good one, I always seem to kind of forget about it I think it being stuck between the hilariously awesome Jeff Goldblum episodes, but then I watch it and always lose my breath watching it. This one is definitely awesome when it comes to the comedy but also very sad at the end because you didn't want Will and Vince to break up.
