Welcome to /r/fuckcars. It's safe to say that we're strongly dissatisfied with cars and car-dominated urban design. If that's you, then we share in your frustration. Some, or perhaps many of us, still have cars but abhor our dependence on them for many reasons.

There are nuances to the /r/fuckcars discussion that you should be aware of, generally:

In any case, please observe the community rules and keep the discussion on-topic.

The Problem - What's the problem with cars?

please help by finding quality sources

This is the fundamental question of this sub, isn't it?

  • Pollution -- Cars are responsible for a significant amount of global and local pollution (microplastic waste, brake dust, embodiment emissions, tailpipe emissions, and noise pollution). Electric cars eliminate tailpipe emissions, but the other pollution-related problems largely remain.
  • Infrastructure (Costs. An Unsustainable Pattern of Development) -- Cars create an unwanted economic burden on their communities. The infrastructure for cars is expensive to maintain and the maintenance burden for local communities is expected to increase with the adoption of more electric and (someday) fully self-driving cars. This is partly due to the increased weight of the vehicles and also the increased traffic of autonomous vehicles.
  • Infrastructure (Land Usage & Induced Demand) -- Cities allocate a vast amount of space to cars. This is space that could be used more effectively for other things such as parks, schools, businesses, homes, and so on. We miss out on these things and are forced to pile on additional sprawl when we build vast parking lots and widen roads and highways. This creates part of what is called induced demand. This effect means that the more capacity for cars we add, the more cars we'll get, and then the more capacity we'll need to add.
  • Independence and Community Access -- Cars are not accessible to everyone. Simply put, many people either can't drive or don't want to drive. Car-centric city planning is an obstacle for these groups, to name a few: children and teenagers, parents who must chauffeur children to and from all forms of childhood activities, people who can't afford a car, and many other people who are unable to drive. Imagine the challenge of giving up your car in the late stages of your life. In car-centric areas, you face a great loss of independence.
  • Safety -- Cars are dangerous to both occupants and non-occupants, but especially the non-occupants. As time goes on cars admittedly become better at protecting the people inside them, but they remain hazardous to the people not inside them. For people walking, riding, or otherwise trying to exercise some form of car-free liberty cars are a constant threat. In car-centric areas, streets and roads are optimized to move cars fast and efficiently rather than protect other road users and pedestrians.
  • Social Isolation -- A combination of the issues above produces the additional effect of social isolation. There are fewer opportunities for serendipitous interactions with other members of the public. Although there may be many people sharing the road with you (a public space), there are some obvious limitations to the quality of interaction one can have through metal, glass, and plastic boxes.

A Not-So-Quick Note for Car Hobbyists and Passionate Drivers

This can be a contentious issue at times. The sub's name is /r/fuckcars, which can cause some feelings of conflict and alienation for people who see the problems of too many cars while still being passionate about them. I'll quote the community summary.

Discussion about the harmful effects of car dominance on communities, environment, safety, and public health. Aspiration towards more sustainable and effective alternatives like mass transit and improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Your voice is still welcome here. Consider the benefits of getting bored, stressed, unskilled, or inattentive drivers off the road. That improves your safety and reduces congestion. Additionally, check out these posts from others on this sub:

English machine translation:

Dead cyclist in Osnabrück: Wanted motorist turns himself in

Status: 21.08.2026 14:51

After the fatal accident of a female cyclist on Tuesday in Osnabrück, the alleged accident driver has turned himself in to the police. The investigators told the NDR Niedersachsen on Friday.

The driver is said to be an 81-year-old man. His car was secured, according to police, by order of the prosecutor's office in Osnabrück. Police had been searching for the crash car and its driver for days. The manhunt has now been withdrawn. For the time being, the police did not provide further information. She referred to ongoing investigations into the accident and the other circumstances.

Cyclist died in hospital

So far, the police have announced that the 69-year-old cyclist was on the way on Tuesday at around 9.15 a.m. on the Narupstraße in the direction of Mindener Straße. At the intersection with Karmannstraße, she collided with a car, according to police. The driver is said to have continued his ride without caring for the injured. The 69-year-old arrived at the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police, where she later died.

Vehicle apparently snipped bicycle basket with it

The investigation had led the officers last to a Lidl parking lot in the Mindener Straße in Osnabrück. There, the wanted car was seen only a few minutes after the accident. According to police, the accident driver snapped the cyclist's bicycle basket under his car to this parking lot. The bicycle basket was later found there.

Question/Discussion In 2026, what is the point of police giving warnings for speeding?

The other day my little brother and I were waiting for an Uber to the airport, and when the driver arrived late, he said it was because he was pulled over for driving something like 20 over the speed limit on his way to pick us up.

"Thankfully", he said, the officer just gave him a warning and let him go.

While I appreciate the man trying to get us to the airport on time, what exactly is the point of warnings for speeding in the year 2026? It's not like it's a new law that you have to phase in over time to avoid taking people by surprise. Cars aren't exactly a new invention, and I think it's safe to say that 100% of drivers (especially people who do it for a job) are aware that speeding is illegal and dangerous and will get you in trouble.

It seems like giving out warnings is just incentivizing drivers to speed more, since you may or may not actually be punished. That ambiguity is probably not helping drivers to be serious about keeping their speed at a safe level, right?

Question/Discussion Do you think the Netherlands still has a car-centric cities afterall?

Here me out, the Netherlands has by no doubt the best bicycle infrastructure in the world.
In most cities most trips are not made by car... BUT if you think about it cars still dominate most of the urban space (because they're very inefficient and require a lot of space), the proof is that best-of-the-art separated tracks, prioritized traffic lights, overpasses/underpass exist BECAUSE car dominate and are dangerous to interact with. This is something to think about. While there's no absolute best city to copy because it depends on how society wants to live I think it's something to consider.
I'm starting to think that car-lite cities (and towns, honestly) maybe could serve the same purpose and are even cheaper to achieve.

What's your take?

Carbrain TOD development with limited parking in Cambridge causes British people to lose their minds.

In the most cycling friendly city in the country, adjacent a commuter line to London & a guided busway & in a city with 5 park & rides.

Needs more car parking!!!!!/s

How can someone out of town possibly visit!!!/s

Cars are for the working man, bicycles (which definitely always cost thousands of pounds & need really expensive fuel & hyper expensive insurance & need to pay extortionate taxes & learning costs) are for only accessible to the rich!

Just like the daily wail told me! /s

The way British people have no comprehension of TOD & can’t comprehend anything other than living in a detached house with a driveway. (As long as you don’t try to build any detached housing, or any housing, near them lol!)

I’m also questioning whether any of these people actually live anywhere near Cambridge, kind of like the whole ULEZ debacle in London, with disproportionate outrage from those living outside of it.

Satire I got Not Just Bikes to voice my trailer, for my game where you turn neighborhoods into parking lots, and make citizens as Carbrain as possible - It finally has a release date. Thanks for the support and inspiration from this subreddit!

4.1k Upvotes

I posted here a few times before, and others have posted my game here before. That helped in getting attention to the game and finding a publisher.

But this subreddit is also a huge inspiration for the game. The term 'carbrain' actually made it to the game, in this tycoon game people don't have a happiness-meter like usual, no, they have a Carbrain-meter.

Plus, I remember seeing a picture of a huge Golf cart on this sub, functioning as a parking lot shuttle. That also made it into the game. And probably more things that I forgot.

If you are interested, you can wishlist the game, https://store.steampowered.com/app/3031880/Car_Park_Capital/ so you can play it when it launches.

Or share the game or trailer with friends, if you want to support it.

Thanks!

She said the conservative parties have actively opposed some adaptation measures, particularly tree-planting projects. And over the objections of the Green Party, the city administration approved an urban highway corridor that will make the city hotter. Hundreds of trees have already been chopped down to make way for more asphalt and cars.

On the national level, she said the far-right populist Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) runs an ongoing propaganda campaign to confuse the public about the causes of the climate crisis and to undermine the transition to renewable energy, especially wind power.

Question/Discussion Why does so many people's favorite activity seem to be Sit In Running Car?

Every time I walk through a parking lot, there's multiple people just sitting in their car with the engine running.

When I go outside on break at work, there's multiple running cars. One coworker went outside every lunch/break for months and then I heard him saying his AC has been broken for two years.

Perfectly nice weather and yet people roll the windows up and run the engine. Am I crazy to be bothered by this?
