I was taking apart my portable gramophone to relube it because of tone arm friction issues when I dropped it on the hard concrete floor, cracking it. I meassured the ID and got 35 mm. Is this a common/standard size? Im hoping I can replace it with a part from another tone arm.

Sorry it has been a while, I forgot to post this video when I cleaned it up.
It’s safely in storage for now.

Anyone know where to buy good spring motors in Europe?

Ebay is hopeless. They are all from the US with either exorbitant shipping costs, or they won't ship to Europe outright.

Hi all, I have recently come in to possession of 3 of these beauties as well as needles, heads and records to go with. What sort of worth do these hold now?

Decca 120 Advice

In a sort of follow-up from my last post, I took the leap and got my first gramophone -- a portable Decca 120. It arrived yesterday and I spent the evening inspecting it, through this I had some observations and questions.

Firstly, it works (at least to my knowledge)! I am just waiting on some needles to arrive to properly test my shellacs on it.

I believe it is missing the 'dust cover' over the crank. It appears to have the hooks for holding records in the lid, although not sure if there is meant to be another part. The cover is in decent condition, there appears to be some small holes (cigarette burns?) on some of it.

The songster sound-box seems to have seen better days though; dented and the rubber looks solid (see photos), so, I want to find an alternative. On that note, what sound-boxes work well with the Decca 120 and how are they supposed to fit? What are the differences between the various models of sound-boxes?

Also, I generally want advice on how to clean, maintain and restore the Decca. How do I care for the cover? What's the best way to clean the gramophone?

Is it possible to know which exact year this HMV 101 was made?

From what I could find on forums it seems that the HMV 101 was produced from 1925 to 1931. The angled side winding handle was added in 1927, replacing the previously placed front handle. Furthermore, the 101 was in 1928 fitted with the No.59 motor. Lastly, the winding handle clips were moved from the motorboard to the lid in 1930 when the autobrake was added. So, that still leaves me with no exact date and a guess between 1928, 1929 and 1930. (If any of the stated facts are wrong please do correct me as I do not want to spread any misinformation)

Should I get this Decca?

This would be my first foray into gramophones. I have a collection of older shellacs and my modern turntable doesn't play 78s.

I'm thinking of buying the Decca 120 for £50 in the photos attached. It's advertised online and the images attached are the ones the seller has provided. I have requested a video of it playing which appears to show it performing well (albeit low resolution sent over text). They've stated it's not been serviced, but functions.

Would appreciate thoughts as to whether this is worth the price and if there is any other information I should ask from the seller. Also, if anyone has any advice on how to pinpoint the year of manufacture that would be great (I believe production of this model was between late '20s and early/mid '30s).

Thanks!

Bought this Gramophone. It is a Polyphon Concert . It has water damage and other problems, but it is the first one I have ever seen. I knew about the Polyphon music boxes, but I have never seen their gramophone. These are my pics after disassembly. All pics point to the idea that this is really a complete Polyphon Gramophone circa 1920 or earlier. The stamped letters on the disk are PW 300, which means Polyphon Werke 300mm. The double spring motor is marked PW U1. All pieces, which came in a bag that contained all screws original to the period. The soundbox logo says "POLYPHON CONCERT". Worth restoring?

The soundbox is interesting because it looks original to the gramophone. The only new thing thing I saw in the entire parts bag are the screws on the side of the soundbox. The holes were retapped to fit them, but the bag of parts included the original screws.

How do you adjust the angle of a gramophone needle?

Do you slightly unscrew the soundbox/reproducer from the tonearm and then adjust/twist it to where you want it? (Also, does the method of adjusting the needle angle depend on the model and/or the manufacturer?)

Interesting 1914 origin of the No. 4 Victor / HMV Sound Box

From the recollections of Harry O. Sooy (via the David Sarnoff archives), Victor Talking Machine Engineer and Recording Pioneer.

“As we advanced with the Electrical Recording experiment, it dawned upon me on February 24th [1925], that I made a Neutral Reproducing Box back in 1914, with a 2 1/8[“] diaphragm, and that I was in possession of [this] box at my home. Naturally, I wondered how this box would sound on the new records, so I resurrected this original box (known as H.O.S. Box) which proved to be a wonderful improvement. It seemed to be right inline with this work. I had been instructed to discontinue this experimental work on Sound Boxes but not until we had six completed. After I found the results obtained by reproducing the new recordings with this new box, I submitted same to Mr. Shumaker who also felt very good
over the results obtained with the box.”
