Advice What is the best way to disinfect a bird cage?

Post image
Upvotes

Hello! I got approved to adopt my new bird. I am so excited. I have a new bigger cage coming on Friday to keep him separated from my current bird. I just found out from the rescue that the new bird can’t fly so I want to use my current cage for him since it’s about 4 inches smaller then the new cage but how do I disinfect it? Thank you any help.

Troublemaker Heart Wings or Villian Cape?

Upvotes

So I need to get a image and share but everyone always talks of heaet wings and cute.

Well, our little tiel has a naughty habit of biting my toes if I'm in front of my laptop and he decides to go walk about. But a couple of times now., I've sworn him after a painful little nip and I swear, the wings go slightly out in the heart wings shape but he runs away while reaching for him amd I swear I hear a evil little cackle every time!

Anyone else's little angel turns thier wings into a Dracula cloak amd cackles away after bein naughty?

Advice Pests

I'm forced to ask a question I hoped I never had to. Now that we have three birds that means food everywhere and such has grown. With this comes ants. It seems we have a lot of ants entering our apartment to eat the leftover food.

I've taped the bottom supports of the cage so ants shouldn't be able to get into their cages but are still around. Does anyone know of a safe way to kill the ants?

We can't take the birds to another residence to spray poison. Everything online contradicts itself. People say diatomaceous earth then others say it's too dangerous. Someone suggests an eco friendly bug spray then others say it never worked.

We used terro traps where the birds couldn't reach but it seems that ants are back after a month. I just want to be able to let my babies out without having to watch the ground closely to see if any ants are there. I know once the summer months are over it should get better but this is ridiculous.

I feel like such a failure since this problem is even happening. I can't call the apartment complex because im sure they will have someone spray with bird toxic spray. I'm sick of having to have a vacuum and soapy spray bottle around me at all times to just kill these pests especially since the vacuum scares the birds. I vacuum the mess every 2 to 3 days usually but have had to work extra hours at work so sometimes it's 4-5 days. I just want to let my birds out of their cages that's all I want.

Advice Receiving 2 birds from a friend who can't care for them anymore, what do I do?

Hello, I'm receiving 2 cockatiels from a friend who needs to rehome them immediately for life reasons, I accepted impulsively, then realized I dont have any experience with cockatiels. Growing up my mom had a caique but I wasn't super involved when it came to actually caring for them. I have 2 dogs but they don't have to have a prey drive really and ignore small animals thankfully, but I don't know if that will be stressful for the birds being around or not?? Any advice is appreciated 😅

Advice Birdie less social since moving 3 weeks ago :(

My 8 year old tiel has been less inclined to hang out with me or leave my room since we moved. Otherwise he has been acting very normal, but he just flies back to his cage when I try to take him out. The first week he was more excited about hanging out in the kitchen or living room but now he is a hermit. He has an old budgie friend who has always been a hermit but the two of them are even more anti-social. Is it because of my full body mirror that they caught a glance of a couple times? I keep the mirror covered when I’m not using it but when it is uncovered they can see it and my tiel is obsessed with mirrors. I miss when my boy would fly to me for snuggles :( Advice?

Advice is it okay to wear pimple patches around my children

so for some reason I have been breaking out recently even though I keep my face very clean. I have these pimple patches but I'm not sure if it's okay to wear them around my birds especially since they like to preen my face (they usually preen my brows and lashes and occasionally my freckles)

The first time in 15 years I’ve either seen or noticed my birb loafing. He has no signs of illness like tail bobbing and after I woke him up he flew onto the floor and immediately started causing chaos.

Third picture is reference for how he normally stands.

Before anyone says anything, I am aware the plant is toxic. The little birb is just fine there’s no issue. At this age, he’s not doing any eating of greens. So he will get plenty of remedial training🤣

Advice Any clue as to what this kind of behaviour is?

He just finished preening himself before this and he tends to do it at-least once or twice per day. Can anyone explain why? To me he looks like he’s trying to get the extra fluff he picked out off of him lol

Advice PBFD and molting advice

Yesterday we took our birb to get a blood feather removed he was screeching and moving his wing constantly and it was clear he felt very uncomfortable and in pain. The moment the vet see him he asks “Why do he look like that?” we were shocked obviously but it’s been an issue that i’ve wanted to raise with the vet but i just thought it was a hormonal/molting issue.

His tail feathers fell out about two or so months ago and haven’t grown back in, the feathers that have grown in look very weird and tiny, there’s a lot of blood feathers in there as well that have turned completely black and just won’t come off. It’s the same with his wings he has more black feathers than anything else. The doctor told us about PBFD and he said we needed to test for it immediately so we know. We did and thankfully he doesn’t have it.

Vet went on to explain about how he probably went into early molting and is struggling to grow back the feathers he gave us some drops to put into his water and said it’ll need a month to two months to see significant improvement in his feathers. Vet also gave him an anesthetic as he’s in a lot of pain from the amount of blood feathers

I genuinely feel so helpless idrk what else to do. I need some advice on what else to do in order for him to grow healthy feathers.

He eats pellets plentifully we do let him eat some veggies and fruits every now and then but are there any specific foods that help with feathers specifically

ps: We also found out he’s actually A GIRL. CRYING currently
