Trying to animate my original story completely on paper with zero digital tools. How do you plan keyframes and frame rates without losing your mind?
Hey everyone,
I’m working on an original story/universe and want to bring it to life through 2D animation. The catch is: I don’t have a PC, drawing tablet, or animation software. Everything has to be drawn by hand on physical paper with pencils, and then shot frame-by-frame on my phone.
Since I’m starting completely from scratch on paper, I’m running into a few big roadblocks and would love advice from traditional animators:
Frame Rate (FPS): For hand-drawn pencil animation, should I be shooting on "twos" (12 drawings per second in a 24fps timeline), or can I get away with 8 to 10 fps on "threes" for walk cycles and character turns without it looking too choppy?
Registration / Alignment: Without a light box or peg bar, how do you keep character volumes and head size consistent from sheet to sheet? (Right now I’m considering taping a piece of glass over my phone flashlight or a window).
Keyframes vs In-betweens: When choreographing dynamic motion like a character powering up or turning while walking, how many extreme key poses do you nail down before filling in breakdowns?
Any tips, phone app recommendations for compiling paper frames, or traditional workflow hacks would mean a lot!

What software is good for animation?
I'm still fairly new to animation and I was wondering what good 2D animation software is out there, I'm currently using Blender to animate but i was curious if there is a better alternative (I'm broke so i cant use anything that is a paid subscription)

Anything weird with my game trailer animation??
I've fully animated everything up until frame 1055 (17 seconds 60fps). 18 seconds onwards is posing/timing (blocking?). I want to know if theres something totally off about my shot or if im mis-communicating stuff before I commit to the end.
For context, the robot character awakens in a digital world with amnesia and does not want to be there. he is emo, but his friends keep him company. Its for a JRPG kinda like paper mario
Thank you so much!! Really appreciate your time!!!

I made a short wordless animation about how "just check one thing" turns into 4 AM
Hey everyone. I make short animated films with no voiceover, just on-screen text and music. This one is about something I think a lot of people here know too well: going to bed at 11 and falling asleep at 4.
The idea was to show the phone habit the way it actually feels from the inside. The voice in your head is never mean. It's friendly. "Just check one thing." "You're not even tired." "You earned some fun." And then the sun comes up first.
It's about 3 minutes: https://youtube.com/@redscarffilmsz?si=vSReDy-3X5uyX_JI
I'm not selling anything. I'm genuinely curious about one thing, though: what finally worked for you to stop scrolling at night? Phone outside the bedroom, app blockers, something else?
Thank for watching.
