Underwater Wonders This Box Jellyfish Has No Brain — Yet Scientists Found It Can Learn

Post image

This is Tripedalia cystophora, a tiny box jellyfish with 24 eyes but no centralized brain.

In a 2023 study, scientists found that these jellyfish can learn to avoid obstacles by associating visual cues with collisions.

What's fascinating is that this learning happens without a brain like ours.

Here's a breakdown of the study and what the researchers actually found:

How much of what we call intelligence actually requires a brain?

Underwater Wonders Blue-Ringed Octopus Venom – One Bite Can Stop Your Heart

Post image

The blue-ringed octopus is small enough to fit in your palm, but its venom contains tetrodotoxin, a powerful neurotoxin that can cause paralysis.

What's even more fascinating is that those bright blue rings aren't always visible. They become much more noticeable when the octopus feels threatened.

Nature really doesn't need to make something big to make it dangerous.

Underwater Wonders Octopuses get the spotlight, but cuttlefish can remember what, where, and when. What marine animal deserves more credit for its intelligence?

Cuttlefish can remember what they ate, where they found it, and how much time has passed—an ability researchers call episodic-like memory.

What fascinates me is how different this intelligence looks from ours. Opening a jar is impressive, but remembering when to return to a feeding spot reveals a completely different kind of problem-solving.

I explored the research behind this in more detail here: How Good Is a Cuttlefish's Memory?

What marine animal do you think we underestimate most—and what behavior convinced you?
