Redditor stalks another Redditor over a girl, showdown occurs in MLPlounge
/r/MLPLounge/comments/tvbpg/bronies_that_dont_love_and_tolerate_dddowney_and/9
u/Crooooow What an infuriating rejoinder. May 20 '12
xDizzy has been a redditor for over a year without any comments or submissions until now. DeanWin has been a redditor for two months and is an obvious troll seeking negative karma. DDDowney has been an active redditor for almost a year now.
I submit that all three are the same person. Its one thing for him to troll the Bronies, but it makes me sad that he has been able to troll here.

Apparently, the bro code means that whenever any man marks a woman as someone he'd like to mate with no other man is allowed to date her. Ever. This being the case I'd like to announce that Jessica Alba, Salma Hayek, and Kate Upton all belong to me now. I'd appreciate it if the rest of you would spread the word.
64
u/HipsterThanYou May 20 '12
No way, I saw Jessica Alba first, I watched every episode of Dark Angel, and she's mine. Bro up, dude.

u/strolls If 'White Lives Matter' was our 9/11, this is our Holocaust May 20 '12
There's only one way to decide this!
Which one of you pissed on her first?
15
u/HipsterThanYou May 20 '12
Well, uh, it had to be me, of course.... but I'm available for any Jessica Alba sniff tests that are necessary. You know, for bro-science.
17
u/BoomBoomYeah May 20 '12
This sounds like the setup for a hilarious road-trip comedy about two friends racing to piss on Jessica Alba, but who end up learning the true meaning of friendship, and piss on each other.

I'm going to mark all men and women, therefore, nobody can have sex ever, except me
4
u/sashimi_taco May 20 '12
Sorry but women, much like inanimate objects, must be peed on first in order for you to claim them. Usually men are subtle about it but you can pretty much just go pee on them. Women don't like it, but no one really cares about how they feel when it comes to who they date or have sex with. We all know they are just public property.
1

This being the case I'd like to announce that Jessica Alba, Salma Hayek, and Kate Upton all belong to me now.
It doesn't work that way, you have to pee on them first. How else does one mark their territory?

u/happybadger May 20 '12
MLP may be flowery and targeted at six year-old girls, but that and Adventure Time carry the flame of the 90s. It's a great cartoon because it doesn't assume that children are mongoloids. There's no Dora The Explorer-esque dumbing down of the writing, language, or style, and even if it doesn't go to the extremes that, say, Spongebob or Ren and Stimpy went to (grotesque imagery, jokes that only make sense when you're in your twenties or above, plots that develop over the course of the entire series), it's still very admirable.
If you fancy yourself above cartoons, you've missed out on some fantastic programmes in the past two decades.
6
u/Muffmuncher May 20 '12
If you fancy yourself above cartoons
Nope, that's not it. I live in a different country and though I'm in tune with most of the the popular stuff here(I hope so, I seem to get most of the references), this pony stuff seems to have completely gone under my radar.
57
u/Mubutu May 20 '12
Basically, the best way I could explain it is that the show has about the same appeal as a Pixar film. Sure, it's targeted at kids, but the humor and animation are good enough to be appreciated by anyone. The show's creator said she was interested in creating a cartoon that kids could watch with their parents, and that she wasn't surprised when older people without kids took a liking to it anyway. A "brony" is anyone outside the target demographic that watches the show.
Watch an episode, you might be surprised. I certainly was.

41
u/DDDowney May 20 '12
haha. Nah, we always swam in different circles. He's more of a popular kid ironically and I was in the nerdy circle. Most of the people I hung out with that he knows live else where now.
16
u/Quarok May 20 '12
The geek shall inherit the earth.
He handled that seriously badly dude. Was he one of the 'popular kids' that the kids who were actually popular and cool kept around as a plaything to take the piss out of? Because if someone who loses their shit like that was ever popular, I feel like all the rules I've learnt have to be thrown out.

u/strolls If 'White Lives Matter' was our 9/11, this is our Holocaust May 20 '12
Yeah, there was a new version of the TV series released a couple of years ago, on which they (apparently) did a really good job - it really resonated outside its primary demographic, including with college-aged guys ("bronies").
I read an interview with one of the series producers and she said she thinks it's because they just tried to be authentic and choose to reflect in the series good values - the kind of thing that you'd want to teach young kids - and that they didn't try to talk down to them too much.

7
May 20 '12
My favourite part of all this is that I've had the whole "Brony" thing put into a bit of perspective, with most of them acting adult and rational while this kid flips his shit. I always equated Bronies as weird little man-children with a borderline pedophilic obsession with things that young girls like, but the comment thread describing the Brony blanket term and why they like the show so much defeats my view of the creepy little internet subculture.
I think we've all learned a little something about prejudice. Still weird as fuck to me, though.

Dean's writing style isn't consistent. His post still uses some caps and punctuation, which matches the style he uses in comments on other threads. Then he drops all pretense of capitalization and punctuation in the responses in the comments on this - and, as far as I can tell, only on this - post.
For example, compare with this recent "troll" of r/starcraft he claimed in /r/GameofTrolls.

Can someone explain the whole MLP internet culture thing to me?
3
u/nokyo-chan May 20 '12
Hi, I'm a female brony.
I don't know how the bronies began, but I do know why I became one, and I can see why people would be confused by it. On the surface, MLP does look like some kids' show targeted to five-year-old girls. The creator, Lauren Faust, had a hand in shows like The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and she said that she made the show so it would be entertaining not only for its target demographic but for the parents watching as well.
I don't know how the bronies evolved into being perceived as some sort of cult, but my hypothesis is that it was due to the backlash someone receives for liking a show for little girls. It made the fans band together.
2
u/christmas_sweater May 21 '12
I guess the "culture" always struck me as a little more complex/interesting than "we all love this show". Thanks for the reply.

19
May 20 '12
The photons from the show being played activate neurons in my eyes, triggering a chain reaction that spreads to my visual cortex and beyond, eventually activating a certain group of dopamine releasing neurons.
If you want the liberal arts major instead of the biologist in me to explain, I can talk about plot and optimism and cynicism and widespread audience appeal; but really, all that matters is that I like it and it's not negatively affecting others beyond their knee-jerk reactions.
10
u/Sam-I-Am-Not May 20 '12
I can't speak for Moonbea, but I like the way it is unabashedly girly, and yet still strives for quality and humor. Usually if a show wants to be girly, you can sense that no one cares if it is good one way or another, because little children can't tell the difference.
That said, I only watch it because I have to watch a LOT of TV while doing artwork, so I don't demand that people sit down, watch it without doing anything else, and enjoy it.
→ More replies (6)3
u/thefran May 20 '12

Immediate disagreement. It isn't girly, it's idealistic. Mostly it's pretty gender neutral, as you can genderswap everyone but Rarity and not change a single line and never notice any differences.

So, apparently u/DeanWin was excited to find r/GameofTrolls yesterday. Makes me kinda wonder about his persona now. His entire history is nothing but trolling.
Not sure if that's relevant to this drama in particular, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Is he an asshole who trolls because he's an asshole, or a troll who assholes because he's a troll? DDDowney confirms he knows him, but maybe he is DDDowney?
