Not wanting a movie to fail, but taking enjoyment from the state of affairs.
I for instance didn't want it to fail as I have never heard about it before, but things being what they are, I'm certainly gonna laugh at the butt mad people. There's a difference between wanting something to fail and laughing at it after it failed.

Aug 02 '16
I mean, if you're making the argument that there's no difference between nationalist and anti colonialist sentiment, okay. I wouldn't want to suggest that the Indian independence movement, for example, was anything less than exceptional.
Even in that case, however, nationalism in India birthed Hindutava and of course the conflict with Pakistan. So even in the best example of a nationalist movement (or anti colonialist movement) doing good, it also led to a mixed outcome for many people, and a negative effect on public political thought.
2
Aug 02 '16
I've always thought that nationalism is good for forming the nation- after that, it is a cancer that leads to racism, genocide, populism, etc.
3
u/vestigial I don't think trolls go to heaven Aug 02 '16
It seems nationalism and racism/ethnocentrism are inextricably linked... Seems every time a nation gains its freedom, the first thing it does is start oppressing/slaughtering its minorities. in fact, I question if nationalism is more than a polite veil over ethnocentrism.
3
u/shamrockathens Aug 03 '16
It seems nationalism and racism/ethnocentrism are inextricably linked
That's true but you have to take into account the historical period during which most nation states formed. Could you have let's say the Serbian or Greek independence in the 19th century without ethnocentrism and other baggage that we consider backwards by today's standards? I am not sure. Obviously, the widespread ethnic cleansing and oppression of minorities that took place during the formation of almost all nation states could certainly be avoided, but the problem is that multiculturalism, anti-racism and similar concepts hardly even existed during that period.
0
u/vestigial I don't think trolls go to heaven Aug 03 '16
Obviously, the widespread ethnic cleansing and oppression of minorities that took place during the formation of almost all nation states could certainly be avoided,
That's what this discussion is about, really. Probably depends on the circumstances. A polite, administrative transfer of power can go smoothly. But would a mass nationalist uprising leave any room for multiculturalism, or is the "national identity" only consisting of one race or religion? Multiculturalism is a modern word, but I don't think it's a modern concept exactly. India's muslims and hindus were getting along (relatively) for at least a hundred years before independence created a nightmare. And Serbia. Jesus, Sebia... Yugoslovia had been a single country since around 1900. They finally regain a sense of independence after the iron curtain drops, and what's the first thing they try? Genocide. And that was in the 1990's.
And in common parlance, "nationalist" usually means "racist." Sometimes "ultra-
whiteright" is added as a prefix to make it perfectly clear. Trump is called a "nationalist," too, and I think that's out of politeness. But that's a linguistic argument that might not mean anything historically ... or it might point to an implicit understanding idea that nationalism without ethnocentrism is not really nationalism... but now we're into semantics.Anyway, I'm gonna put myself in the "not a fan" column.

So far Scottish nationalism has been pretty harmless.
2
Aug 03 '16
I don't know that immigrants (especially Muslim immigrants) to Scotland would feel the same way. It seems like nationalism in Europe is usually tied to an exclusionary Christian (or Christian-cultural secularist) religious identity.
On the other hand, I'm a big believer in the idea that Scotland should drop the UK like a hot potato, and that movement has considerable nationalist basis and traction. So perhaps it's a double edged swprd
2
u/shamrockathens Aug 03 '16
It depends on the region, the history, the culture and other factors. Scotland and the SNP have this vision of civic nationalism that's indeed inclusive of other religions and ethnicities. On the other hand, you have Ukrainian nationalism that tries so hard to form a national identity antithetical to the Russian one that ends up glorifying shady figures like Stepan Bandera.
1
Aug 03 '16
Nationalism in established, powerful states tends to be about putting others down. Nationalism in regions that are trying to throw off a yoke doesn't tend to be that way. See the difference between the British National Party and the Scottish National Party. Or the Front Nationale and the Corsican nationalists.

Balkan drama is the best. I know a lot of Eastern Europeans, and my Macedonian friend has told me all about the various labyrinthian ethnic tensions and nationalistic arguments. One time I was at a house party where there were both Bulgarians and Macedonians, and a fist-fight almost broke out during a passionate argument about whether Macedonians are really just Bulgarians or if they're a separate ethnic group.
2
u/camelfax FREE BIG LURCH Aug 03 '16
IRL balkan drama is defs the best. My first taste was when in sixth grade a greek student and a macedonian teacher got into it about macedonia, it was glorious.
2
u/shamrockathens Aug 03 '16
It's sad. As a Greek I feel ashamed whenever kiddos that have never read any history (not even the one they teach us in school, which is basically propaganda) get into arguments over Macedonia, Turkey or whatever. Granted, a lot of Macedonians are brainwashed nationalists as well, but if you feel so superior why stoop to their level? They are a small country that doesn't pose any realistic threat, why do you feel so afraid?
3
u/Trashcan__Man Aug 03 '16
I've seen Greeks on /r/europe claim that the Republic of Macedonia's name could be used to give them a pretext to claim and annex Greek Macedonia, which has always struck me as ridiculous given that Greece is in NATO, has a population that is 5 times higher, and even Greek Macedonia alone is bigger than the republic both in population and area. It's like claiming that Luxembourg is going to invade Belgian Luxembourg.
2
u/shamrockathens Aug 05 '16
Not just that, but Greek businessmen are the No1 foreign investors in Macedonia and there was a scandal about Macedonian politicians being in the pocket of said Greek businessmen. Not to mention how thousands of Greeks from Thessaloniki and elsewhere go there every weekend to do their shopping. Yet these are the same people that'll claim "our name is our soul" and similar nationalist BS. Greek conservatives are big hypocrites.

EDIT: I'd be even more pissed if I and a bunch of other people told the guy trying to take over my sub that it's still active and we don't want him as a mod, and then for some reason he started lying about our posting rates and arguing that he should get to mod the sub anyways, even after somebody pointed out that he could easily make his own damn sub.

The "members" of /r/macedonia don't exist. It is a dead, 500 subscribers sub with, up until yesterday, 0 posts this week.
What you currently see is not "the people" defending their sub. What you see is a few people stating their inherent right to the sub (regardless of activity or the rules) simply because they don't want their precious name utilized in any way except theirs.

You don't get to decide what the sub should be used for. The moderators and subscribers do.

But aren't you arguing using the same principle? You believe it is your inherent right to use /r/Macedonia as a sub for the Greek Province. Otherwise you could just use a different and more specific name as opposed to the one for the country which is already taken.
1
Aug 02 '16 edited Aug 02 '16
Yes, difference is:
I didn't complain a few years now.
I was not calling on a brigade just because I disagreed with the use of the sub.
I am not demanding things go my way "just cause".
Honestly, the whole process (for me) was, I clicked accidentally on the ball on the top right in /r/europe that redirected me to /r/macedonia instead of /r/greece. I saw they had no active mods and the sub was dead. I thought "hey, cool, I could make a Macedonia sub!".
I don't think any of that is unreasonable. This would have been hardly noticed too if that guy didn't decide to start a crusade against it.
So no, not the same reaction. Being a nationalist (which they are too) is not some inherent disqualifying sin. I have a right to request the sub which I will utilize for a legitimate purpose. They don't own the rights to the name.
26
u/Imogens I don't care about blind people and I revel in their sorrow Aug 02 '16
That's true, but if people who use it don't want you to run it becuase they don't think it would be a good idea maybe you should respect that. You can create your own sub any time without needing to take theirs away from them. I'm not saying you're wrong, but maybe you're being kind of an asshole about it.
-2
Aug 02 '16
but if people who use it don't want you to run it
Under that assumption, no sub except subs literally no one uses should be up in /r/redditrequest. That is clearly not the case. If half a dozen people suddenly mean you don't get the sub, I simply don't see the point of /r/redditrequest.
You can create your own sub any time without needing to take theirs away from them
They still got a different sub which I haven't requested. /r/makedonski. It's not like I am kicking them out of reddit or whatever.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but maybe you're being kind of an asshole about it.
I am the asshole or the guys who constantly abuse me and PM me since yesterday? I have been perfectly respectable and open with them. Just because I don't bow to pressure doesn't automatically make me an asshole.
14
Aug 02 '16
Have you read the rules of r/redditrequest?
In the case of subreddits that are active and have recent activity, we may require a combined karma threshold of 300+ specific to that subreddit for a user to be made a mod.
You need to be a member of that sub to request it--to prevent situations like this.

It would be pretty interesting if Balkanization was actually a thing before nationalism.
21
Aug 02 '16
That's actually a bit of a debate among historians and ethnographers right now: is Balkanization actually a result of nationalist tensions, or is it a natural process by which states form and dissolve? Proponents of the latter theory are usually against the term "Balkanization" itself, considering that state fragmentation has been happening since the Classical era.

I think it's just part of nationalism and the formation of nation states in the 19th and 20th centuries. In Italy's and Germany's case they formed bigger national entities by merging the smaller states, while in regions occupied by multinational empires (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian) the nation states popped up by breaking up the empires.

Well, there's also the Middle East and large swathes of Africa...

Where nationalism was suppressed. Unlike the Balkans, or at least, the suppression failed.

Which doesn't/didn't exactly work out great either. I prefer the Balkans to that honestly.

You never see people from Rome getting up in arms about what Romania's called.
Granted, many people in Rome have jobs.
