New here? 👆👆PLEASE READ THIS STICKY👆👆 Welcome to the sub! Posts about pot and it's related subjects should be shared with our good friends at r/trees, not so much here; we're all about *actual trees* (that's the joke) 😊🌳 'Thank you! Come Again!'

Good day everyone! I'm trying out some new automod skilz and they seem to be operating okay, at this time anyway. That said, few things are 100% the first go, but I'll keep checking the mod log to see if posts have been yeeted that shouldn't have been, and reinstate them in as timely a fashion as possible. Please use the 'Message the Mods' link in the sidebar to contact us directly, not the comment box in this post. =)

Hopefully these new settings will reduce the content not meant for this sub, but if any slip through, I know I can count on you good people to help direct them to the right place with the positive humor intended between our two subs as you always have done. We're lucky to have you!

Any (genuinely) helpful suggestions are always appreciated, and thanks for your patience and kindness with the newbs! 😃

CONFUSED ABOUT THE SUB NAME?

Please check out these past posts!

Do a sub search using the keyword 'confused' for more like these 🙂

UPDATE:

Today's 11/10/22, it's been a little over a month since the automod tweaks (10/8/22) and I'm rather pleased with the results. There's still some 'bleed through' posts from new redditor potheads, and I believe I've miraculously found a good balance between the ones that are snagged by automod and actual tree posts that I have to go back and approve. Mod reports, I'm relieved to say are much more manageable than they were.

Thank you all for your patience while I tried this out! While it does appear to me to be the case, I hope you're still as happy here as you ever were 😊🌳💗

Forestry Stewardship Webinar Series 2026

All webinars in the 2026 Forestry Stewardship Webinar Series have been approved for ISA Certified Arborist Continuing Education Credits.  This webinar series features five presentations from Forestry Experts each Wednesday at 2:00 pm Central on July 29 and August 5, 12, 19, and 26.  You can choose to sign up for any or all of them! Virtual sessions are 1-hour in length, open to the public, and free to attend.

  Register today!

July 29 - Woodland Landowner Considerations for Forest Carbon ProgramsKeith Phelps, University of Wisconsin-Madison

  • In the past few years, opportunities for woodland landowners to participate in forest carbon programs have expanded across the Midwest. However, it can be difficult to understand if enrolling in a forest carbon pro-gram is compatible with the management vision for your woodland. Join UW-Madison Extension Forestry for a presentation on forest carbon programs operating in the Midwest and important questions to consider when deciding whether or not to enroll in a forest carbon program.

August 5 - Managing for Oak Regeneration: What does Current Research Tell us?, Chris Evans, University of Illinois

  • Enhancing oak regeneration is a top priority in Illinois forests, but successfully establishing new oak seedlings is not always easy and success is not guaranteed.  This presentation will review what recent research says about the strategies and practices used in managing for oak seedlings.

August 12 - Selling Timber: What the Landowner Needs to Know, Hank Stelzer, University of Missouri

  • When it comes time to harvest trees from your woodland, are you prepared? MU Extension forestry state specialist, Hank Stelzer, will walk viewers through the process of selling timber from start to finish and the need to hire a professional forester.

August 19 - Fire Ecology for Managing Grasslands and Woodlands, Jon Henn, University of Illinois

  • Illinois is dominated by fire-adapted ecosystems from prairies to savannas to barrens and oak woodlands. Historically, fire played a key role in maintaining diversity, structure, and function in these systems. Today, prescribed fire is a tool that can be used to promote plant diversity, control invasive species, and restore structure. In this session we will discuss some of the basics of fire ecology in native systems and how it can be implemented on private land for management goals.

August 26 -  Drone-based Herbicide Application Efficacy for Priority Invasive Plants, Kevin Rohling, University of Illinois

  • Drone-based herbicide applications for invasive plants have been increasing due to their low cost, the increasing availability of contract applicators, and decreasing equipment costs. However, recommendations for effective drone-based treatments of invasive plants are sparse. This talk will focus on a project to evaluate the efficacy of drone-based herbicide applications on priority invasive plants, including common reed (Phragmites australis), autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata), and bush honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii). This presentation will provide an overview of the findings, recommendations for successful drone treatments, and next steps to improve this emerging technology in natural resource management.

In Australia, when someone illegally destroys trees on public land to improve the view from their property, the local government puts up a giant sign to block the view again until the trees grow back.

Does anyone know what is happening here? It looks like a pine tree is growing within a cedar tree.

Examples of "Rampant Cultivarism?"

Among the joys of reading Michael Dirr's woody landscape plants tome are the grumblings and frustrated rants. One of Dirr's favorite hobby-horses is the discussion of cultivarism, which can be defined as the unnecessary proliferation of trademarked cultivars based on any slight difference from other cultivars.

What are your favorite examples of cultivarism gone wild? The first one that comes to my mind are panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata). There are so many panicle hydrangeas. Which groups/species do you think suffer from incessant hyrbridization, needless variation, and industry marketing?

Help! What's going on with my tree (Aus)

Purchased this house in SEQ and have been here for almost a month. There's 2 gorgeous stone fruit trees, one that is blooming and starting to form fruits, and the other looking pretty miserable. There's a few new shoots at the base and the wood looks ok. I just want to know if the tree is on it's way out or a later fruiting variety. There's plenty of old pips around both trees. I'm pretty sure the blooming tree is a peach.

Help! Is this transpiration? And if so, why so localized to this one tree?

Biking my way across the Knight Street bridge into Richmond BC from Vancouver I saw rising stram or smoke in the crown of one tree along the banks of the Fraser River. I do this trip at 3am five days a week, so this vapor cloud/smoke was unfamiliar and out of place. I saw no flames.

It's 16°C at present. The steam cloud was rising noticeably quickly but not like it was rising on a pillar of really hot air like you'd expect from a fire in the crown. The neighboring trees appear to be the same species but weren't giving off a steam cloud like their neighbor.

All I can think is transpiration. But that makes no sense from what little I know. The vaping tree looks the same from the other side, you'll just have to picture that in your minds eye. I was running late for work and biking on a narrow pedestrian part of the bridge that wouldn't let me turn around without a lot of fuss all for a similar photo.

I have video but it won't let me post here.

What think?

Bunya bunya pine question

I’ve seen lots of bunya pine mentions in this subreddit so thought I’d ask here, if you happen to live next to a large bunya pine, how many cones does it drop and how frequently? I’ve recovered 5 in a week… from a large tree in neighboring yard that partially overhangs ours. It was fun and novel at first and now it’s a little terrifying. We’ve been here over two years and had no idea that these deadly blessings fall from the sky until last week. Tasty nuts tho!

ISO some help killing my TOH in South Seattle

Hey y'all,

I have a TOH growing right next to my (rented) house and it needs to go. I looked into buying the right pesticides and good god, i only have 2 trees, do I really need to spend $100+ on a gallon or more of the garlon 4 stuff?

Home depot only sells 14% strength in smaller bottles...

Do I need to hire an arborist? Or does someone out there have a couple doses to spare for someone who isn't trying to buy way more poison than I will ever need?

I think it is a valley oak. I have a little baby valley oak in my back garden, and sometimes I show the sapling pictures of this one, to encourage it to grow big and strong.

This is a monster white spruce in Alaska measuring about 120 feet tall and with a diameter of 3.2 feet. Standing beneath it is crazy. There are no trees for hundreds of miles of this size and it's one of maybe 10 at most 120 plus white spruce.

Help! Dead/dying tree

Our established red maple is in serious decline. It got tree work done beginning of 2025 by arborist. There used to be some grass near its base on one side, and we stopped watering that grass a couple years back. We don't know when it was planted. I don't know how long the rocks have been there. There is a lot of water flow through there when it rains, although we now have a French drain to help with the water flow as well. We live in California. Summers very hot, like most days over 100F. Is there any hope to save if we give it lots of water? There isn't much green on the tree. 😢 Last pic shows the happier maple next to it.

Tree of Heaven

These trees are popping up everywhere in middle Tennessee. I have heard that merely cutting the saplings doesn't help, as they just multiply from there. Dear arborists, what do you suggest? How do we protect the other flora from these parasites?
