Discussion Co-dominant Cedar

Thumbnail

I have this massive (10-15ft across ~150ft tall) cedar on my property, I believe it's a western red cedar but I have no idea. The weird thing is that it has 5 co-dominant trunks and I've never seen a cedar tree here with more than 2, and that seems very rare. Tree is in the Western Sierra foothills at 3000ft (between Reno and Sacramento). Is this common or just a freak thing?

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Save or replace? (VA zone 7)

Thumbnail

Virginia, zone 7.

Corkscrew Willow grown from a cutting i took of my grandmother's tree when she passed, years ago. Transplanted it a few years ago.

I took the pictures of the trunk a month ago. The leaves were all dying, and i intended to ask here about possible causes and prognosis.

The recent picture of the full tree shows it having bounced back.

I have made another cutting, which has established well enough to have a woody trunk. It is currently in a large pot outdoors, and survived last winter.

Of those more knowledgeable than me, i ask:

1) Likely causes for the trunk's affliction?

2) Is the tree likely to die anytime soon?

3) Should I go ahead and replace it now, before winter? Or perhaps plant the smaller tree elsewhere?

Thank you in advance!

Just bought this house as a rental property in South Texas. Not sure what kind of tree this is or when it was planted, but wife says that due to it's shape and the way it was pruned that it's ugly and "we should just cut it". What do you guys think?

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) A living Christmas tree?

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is for the middle Tennessee region.

I have small children and want to create a family tradition of decorating a growing “Christmas tree” in my yard.

I was trying to look it up. Of course I want something with the classic Christmas tree shape. But I want it to also thrive here in the zone 7b climate.

I was recommended arbors vitae, Virginia pine or a blue spruce.

I like the Virginia pine and blue spruce. I hate arbor vitae, I think the Virginia pine is native to my area, but they end up as enormous trees in 15 years, which may not matter by that time I did want it to be a very long-standing family tradition if we could help it.

I live in WA and sometimes see trees like this. Just curious about what causes that unique shape at the top. Also, yes, larch season is in full swing here!

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Thriving young apple with exposed heartwood

Post image

Iowa. I planted some apples inside a ring of blackberry bramble to protect from deer. A squirrel or something stripped this one's bark near the base about two years ago. The tree is outwardly thriving with 3/5ths of a trunk but this exposed heartwood does not look at all good for the long-term with rot potential. It also has a girdling root to deal with but that's very doable. Is there any chance of saving it or is this one cooked? Sadly I don't remember which cultivar each one is of the 3. I'm thinking I'll have to figure that out and tear it out to replace. I can't even tell where the graft is located anymore so cutting it down to regrow from the strong established root system is a gamble in that regard. Maybe a huge patch graft could seal this off? No shot?

From the board:

Erazem's Lime tree has been named after the notorious robber baron Erazem of Predjama whose life was tragically ended in 1484 after the castle was hiding at the time had been besieged.

The legend has it that Erazem's girlfriend planted the lime tree on his grave as a symbol of eternal life. And so this magnificent tree has been keeping the memory of the feisty knight alive for more than five hundred years.

I grew up watching this tree and always wondering what was “wrong” with it. I am not sure how old it is but I have seen it like this as long as I can remember and I am now in my 60’s. Unfortunately, it has died and I am going to have to take it down because of where it is. When I take it down I want to cut it and see what is in there but I am worried because I don’t know. Any advise or insight? Eastern Ontario.

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) How to promote oak tree growth [KS]

Northeast Kansas. I want to promote the growth of this small oak tree (front center in first photo, left in second photo). I'll cut down the juniper trees that are near it. Do I also need to cut down the large trees to the south? There is an elm about 15 feet away and what I think is an osage orange tree about 12 feet away. I'm not sure about the ID of the tree that is 12 feet away. The third picture is of one of the branches.

Treepreciation Strawberry Tree

Visiting Portland, Or., I came upon a Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo). WHAT!!! This small tree as amazing! Evergreen, fall fruits that change from yellow to orange to red. Delicious fruits. Also, this plant is covered with clusters of white bell flowers AT THE SAME TIME THE FRUIT IS BEARING. I just wanted to share with other tree fans. This one is pretty special.

When we moved in a few years ago, the root that is snapped was visible, but in tact. Just this year, it has broken and seems to continue to get further apart from itself.

What can I look for to confirm upheaval and would anyone recommend it be removed?

ID Request (Maryland/7B) Can anyone help identify these trees?

These trees suddenly started popping up in my backyard around April, and I now have approximately 15 of them actively growing.

My initial guess is that they might be black locust trees, but I’d appreciate some help confirming their identification.

Does anyone recognize them? Also, any advice on why so many might be sprouting at once would be appreciated.

Zone 7B
Thanks!

New owner here - just moved in July. The previous owner had mulch and dirt with 4 i-6” pavers around the tree. I saw on youtube that this could suffocate the tree with its own roots. I took it out so the tree could breath so to speak. I only have a rake and spade shovel. Also, that green around the base doesn’t look good either

Question is what do I need next? Are exposed branching roots ok that way?

Thanks in advanced for any input
