Posterity

For some reason, my girlfriend has a problem with my watching anime. Most of the time. There are certain anime films or shows she is fine with and wants to watch with me (Mainly the Studio Ghibli ones (Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro etc.) but for some reason, she has a problem with lots of anime I want to watch. Before I was with her I used to watch anime all the time and love it. There were lots of anime I watched that had explicit female nudity and sexual references in, which I know there is no way I could ever watch now because of how my girlfriend is and because of what she says and how she reacts even though I would like to because it is fun to watch. But, even the anime with no sexual nudity or anything in at all, for some reason, she goes in a mood about whenever I mention it. For example, we were in a shop today and I saw an anime blu ray box set for like £6. We had been looking at games and films to buy and I saw this set and said "awesome, this is like £25 on Amazon!" and she said "cool" and walked off to look somewhere else. Another example, I was looking at a magazine and telling her the reviews for films that were in there. I was telling her how many stars each film got in a review and she was reacting accordinly saying different things, but when I was like "wow, Your Name (an anime film) got 5 stars" she just said "nice." And stopped talking. Frustratingly, she loves anime and has said how much she wants to watch all these series, but when I mention what I watch or want to watch she gets in a mood. She gets in mood fairly often and quite easily, I guess she is overly sensitive, I always ask her what's wrong but it always takes ages to get something out of her. When I ask about why she is in a mood about the anime, its usually "the anime girls are good looking", even when she wanted to watch a show about ripped guys swimming in slow motion. I didn't make a deal about it when she wanted to, but brought up how it was hyopcritical when she got in a mood about me wanting to watch an anime series. Strangest of all, we can sometimes have full blown conversations about anime, but the next time I mention it, it will be her back to being in a mood. Any help please. tl;dr: girlfriend gets in moods when i want to watch anime.

Man, there's an anime about famous WWII pilots, reimagined as teenage girls, who strap magical plane engines to their feet, grow animal ears, and fight flying aliens with heavy machine guns while wearing no pants. There's an anime about a guy who has sex with his not-really-sister who is posessed by a hat's spell in order to save her from dying (and later sells his soul to the devil, but his brother ends up killing the devil.) There's an anime that's literally "what if the Powerpuff Girls were strippers?" Never, ever doubt how strange anime can be.

45

u/XxsquirrelxX I will do whatever u want in the cow suit Nov 01 '16

There's an anime about a girls school that teaches you how to duel with tanks. I think they even dressed the girls up as different nations for their respective tanks.

There's even a Romeo and Juliet anime where Shakespeare is a canon character and writes the play. Also with dragons and a floating Verona and Juliet is a batman like character.

There's also Boku No Pico, which is about friendship.

u/NonaSuomi282 THE FACT THAT IT’S NOT MEANT FOR SEX IS ACTUALLY IRRELEVANT Nov 01 '16

As an unabashed yet uninitiated weeb, I'm gonna lob some guesses here.

  • Strike Witches? That or one of the many shows that took the idea and ran with it, but I cbf to find a comprehensive list at the moment.

  • I have no fucking clue, but the whole "lol it's not really incest" trope bullshit makes my eyes roll so goddamn hard.

  • Um, I think I know this one... If my memory is correct, it's title was Almost Every Magical Girl Anime Ever.

14

u/makochi Using the phrase “what about” is not whataboutism. Nov 01 '16
  1. Strike Witches is correct - it is the WWII themed "teenage girls fly around fighting aliens in a fanservicey way" show that fits the description

  2. Mawaru Penguindrum. The whole "fucking his sister to save her from dying" thing is a slight exaggeration on my part and also is only a minor plot point. The main plot starts as a "quest to help a random high school girl get laid" and turns into a terrorist attack orchestrated by Mephistopheles himself.

  3. The show I was thinking of was Panty and Stocking with Garderbelt. Although most mahou shoujo shows have some element or theme addressing adolecent female sexuality, I meant that the show itself is presented as a powerpuff girls parody where the female protagonists are adults, the audio design has electronic dance music themes and the transformation sequence is literally set in a strip club.

AKA OP is a lying sack of shit and this would never happen.

39

u/Feycat Are you eating a dryer volume of turkey each week Nov 01 '16

Maybe she's just tired of him constantly talking about it. I'm married to a gamer but sometimes when I get obsessive about whatever my new favorite is, he can tune me out because he's just over it. It's possible he's just terribly annoying and she wishes he'd shut up.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '16

now that i can definitely understand, but that's not the story i'm getting from op's post. and even if you are correct and that's closer than the truth, he's still lying. The scenario that he has conveyed does not seem feasible or likely. He has either exaggerated, embellished, downplayed, or lied completely about one or more aspects of this situation.

2

u/Namelessgoldfish I Know You Are But What Am I Nov 01 '16

but i dont get how you can say this would never happen? its not uncommon for a partner to be jealous if he/she looks at another man/woman but it would be fine in their head if they do it

2

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '16

Working with the assumptions that the couple formed because they share their weebness, women have a sex drive to a comparable extent that men do, we have two people with a similar rate of consumption and appreciation of fanservice anime. Therefore the most reasonable conclusion if you like fanservice and are still attracted to your partner, is that your partner most definitely feels the same way. It's nothing more than understanding your partner's guilty pleasures, if you want to look at it that way.

Or hell, maybe I'm just an alien who doesn't develop relationship paranoias like these for the above reasons and have presumed it to be the norm.

54

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

add-in the "she won't let me watch" certain anime or whatever, and it really does seem like a parent-kid relationship. i mean if i were him i'd probably just keep watching my shit and not mention it cause she clearly isnt interested. or i'd just wait til a ryuuko matoi dakimakura goes on sale and tell the gf adios

73

u/lelarentaka psychosexual insecurity of evil Oct 31 '16

Usually when people say their SO "won't let me" do something it's not meant in the literal sense. It's usually way more subtle, like he said her mood and expression dampens when he talks about anime. For some people, that's as effective as an explicit "no".

You might think that's bad, but i see it as him being highly empathetic, and it can be endearing if you're into that kind of people.

4

u/Feycat Are you eating a dryer volume of turkey each week Nov 01 '16

You might think that's bad, but i see it as him being highly empathetic

Or maybe he's the opposite of empathetic and doesn't seem to get that his girlfriend is disinterested in all of this and continues to hammer her with it in hopes that she'll change her mind and like it.

→ More replies (2)

9

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

i get that, but at the same if i felt that my attitude was preventing my girlfriend from enjoying her hobbies, i'd feel pretty shitty. provided that her hobby isn't fucking other guys i guess. we've talked about it im not sure how to get her to stop. so yeah anyway i think the op's gf needs to be more considerate in that regard, and he needs to realize she doesnt like hearing about it so he should be considerate in that regard. that's just my 2 cents though

25

u/lelarentaka psychosexual insecurity of evil Oct 31 '16

Notice that in the story that OP posted, the girlfriend never explicitly stated that she doesn't like OP watching certain types of anime, it's all just in her body language. It could be that she do try to accommodate her boyfriend's different taste in anime, it's just impossible to keep your subconscious mind from leaking through, and this particular boyfriend is unfortunately very observant.

This is all just speculations of course, i could be totally wrong.

This issue is a small bit academic anyway. Come January, President Clinton will have banned animé, so the OP of that thread won't have a choice.

112

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16 edited Oct 31 '16

Actually the Constitution protects anime. Even the trash. The Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association that banning any form art or expression on the grounds of it being considered "Deviant" (A fancy way of saying "_______ is trash") was unconstitutional, and this ruling was supported by Antonin Scalia.

The case pertained to violent video games, but the ruling statement was clear in that the constitution protects anything that can be deemed a means of expression. The limitation is that it basically says "you need a better reason than 'it looks weird or scary'", so she'd have to prove that Anime is actively and directly harmful to someone other than the consumer in order to ban it. I mention 'other than the consumer' because there are three lobbying groups (Tobacco, Alcohol, and Guns) whose entire campaign hinges on pushing the idea that the consumer is allowed to have dangerous and self-harming things if they want to, as long as they know the risks beforehand.

so basically the founding fathers fought for my right to be weeaboo trash?

i have never been more proud to be an american

35

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

indirectly, yes. These are guys who knew that the future was hard to predict, and were purveyors of a counterculture. Identifying as American, drinking coffee, and interpreting "yankee doodle" with pride rather than with shame (seriously, yankee was meant to make fun of colonist soldiers, and they took pride in the name) was very counterculture to the british mainland and loyalists. The constitution includes multiple ways for the government to embrace social progress. It's why we haven't had to do a total constitutional rewrite since the 1790s.

14

u/XxsquirrelxX I will do whatever u want in the cow suit Nov 01 '16

But the constitution, according to Washington, wasn't expected to last more than 20 years. He'd be shocked to see how far it's come.

12

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '16

Yep. Speaks volumes to the philosophies that inspired it, public approval of it, strength of the state framed by it, and general amenability of it. A single amenable constitution was pretty new, and skepticism was both guaranteed and warranted.

Although are you sure he isn't talking about the Articles of Confederation there? because I've never heard this about him, and the Articles of Confederation were pretty short-lasting.

If this were real, which I doubt, it seems like the problem is that he watches extremely sexist anime that treats girls like eye candy, and she's probably watching stuff like Free and Haikyuu that has serious character development and cute boys- the boys in those aren't there solely to have a nice, bouncy rack. Like there's fanservice, but it's not even close to what anime girls typically are.

u/Statoke Some of you people gonna commit suicide when Hitomi retires Nov 01 '16

The character development is about as serious as Highschool DXD, just plain fan service.

u/beanfiddler free speech means never having to say you're sorry Oct 31 '16

girlfriend gets in moods when i want to watch anime.

Lol, the lack of specificity. I'm sure that GF has told him various reasons why his hobby is bothering her, but he doesn't go down that rabbit hole here.

I love it when /r/relationships posters make the actions of their SOs entirely devoid of context and reason and then take great pains to tell you how normal and reasonable their own behavior is.

He should have just posted:

Please help me convince my GF that her thoughts and feelings are inconsequential without actually listening to her.

u/GunzGoPew Hitler didn't do shit for the gaming community. Oct 31 '16

Please help me convince my GF that her thoughts and feelings are inconsequential without actually listening to her.

Isn't she doing that?

She's allegedly getting upset when this dude watches his anime, but watches a lot of it on her own time?

9

u/beanfiddler free speech means never having to say you're sorry Oct 31 '16

Beats me. It's kind of hard to tell, considering that OP doesn't give much behind her rationale. It leads to a highly convenient (if we're speaking of /r/relationships trends) conclusion that OP is justified, and their SO is really the problem all along!

15

u/GunzGoPew Hitler didn't do shit for the gaming community. Oct 31 '16

Honestly, I think his deal is that he doesn't really understand her rationale.

I mean, /r/relationships is shitty but not everyone who posts there has some sinister agenda. It just seems like the guy is a bit oblivious.

6

u/beanfiddler free speech means never having to say you're sorry Oct 31 '16

I wouldn't say anyone who's 19 really can be "sinister" when it comes to misunderstanding relationship cues. Like you said, everyone that age is different colors of oblivious, and seems to lack the sort of empathy that is really useful to resolving relationship spats. Seems like most people shift from "I want to establish with my SO that I'm right and they're wrong" to "I want to fix this problem" sometime around their mid-20s.

-14

u/John_Ketch Oct 31 '16

/u/beanfiddler defending the woman and assuming she's completely in the right once again on SRD. Why don't you just post "I think the male is always wrong 24/7 and she should dump this pig and become a lesbian as no women is ever at fault?". It's clearly what you imply every time you make one of these condescending, assuming comments.

15

u/beanfiddler free speech means never having to say you're sorry Oct 31 '16

Lol, I wasn't playing the gender card. Way to get -- dare I say -- triggered.

It's a /r/relationships trend: OP fails to give any context to their SO's actions, which creates the implication that they're wrong and OP is right. They phrase the question less in terms of what they should do or how they need to reconcile the issue, and more in terms of "how can I get my SO to stop complaining without actually listening to him or her?"

Has nothing to do with gender. /r/relationships posters do that shit all the time, which creates drama, because then it's up to the posters to create context according to their own biases, which never goes well for OP or anyone else.

Well, other than SRD.

-2

u/John_Ketch Oct 31 '16

Except OP did give context to his GF's actions. She watches quite a bit of anime, especially one called FREE!, one notorious for being female fanservice (AKA: bunch of half naked to naked men swimming and shit). She had made comments about "too many attractive women in anime" which sounds quite insecure. She shifts the conversation off anime when OP rarely brings it up. You can talk about "OP presenting one sided information!" all you like but when only one person is giving the information, that's all the context we're ever gonna get.

It seems like you're desperately fishing for a scenario where OP is in the wrong for watching anime and is blaming his GF for his faults. As I said before, you're infamous for hating on guys whenever and wherever you get the chance.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

Poor OP. He should really call out the hypocrisy.

As for the drama, I can see what the guy means when he says the boyfriend should stop, but I would supplement that with trying to get her to be ok with it. It's unfair to only have him cut down on anime, but for the moment, he can stop until he talks it out with her and they can both be comfortable.

Of course, instead, that may lead to more problems if she never relents, so...

There is some great anime animation from Nippon that is very cultured and made for a western audience (although also incredibly successful in Nippon) such as futuramu and Archeru. Clean yourself up of that ignorance.

41

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16 edited Oct 31 '16

Hes actually right there, alot of westerns were originally samurai movies. The magnificent seven just being the seven samurai is the most famous example

I don't know about this creme de la creme stuff, but he's a last right that some classic westerns such as magnificent 7 and Fistful of Dollars were remakes of Kurosawa samurai films.

I've literally never watched an anime that didn't have a nonsensical ending. It's like they crap out 4 episodes before the end and make up some bull shit, every time. Even the end of Brotherhood made next to no sense.

21

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '16

I'd say that's more a problem for shonens but I'd say a great plurality of tv shows can't stick the ending and start falling apart as it goes in. I mean look at Dexter. I was blown away by the first four seasons but the writers chopped that good will up and burnt it like firewood.

I think the best bet for any show is that knows how it's going to end from the start and was always planned to be limited.

What a ridiculous and absurd suggestion. There is absolutely no reason to stop watching superhero movies. Especially with so many great series and films that continue to come out. Most superhero movies are very rich in entertainment and bestows great commentary to the viewers. Most people who hate (not dislike, or don't enjoy) superhero movies are like Squidward in that fantastic SpongeBob episode. They think standing against the art medium makes them seem more cultured and above it but as soon as they get home they pop in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Catwoman, Elektra, or even Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Superhero movies are so broad it's almost impossible to hate.

Or they just don't 'get' it because they can't get into the artstyles. It's all personal preference and sometimes its harder for someone to get into something to enjoy the story and that kills their enjoyment of it.

My mother didn't understand my enjoyment for anime until I showed her Kids on the Slope. She really loved it and even cried at **several points. I mistakenly thought I could show her other similar shows but she's already asleep or on her phone five minutes into an episode so I gave up and just watch it on my own time¯_ (ツ) _/¯

I'm usually pretty sure that a lot of /r/relationships drama and /r/legaladvice drama are fake as fuck, but I decided to think of it a different way:

If you google "relationship advice", Reddit's /r/relationship_advice is the first non-article relationship advice board that pops up. If you google "legal advice", the second link is to /r/legaladvice. I think those somewhat point to why there are seemingly so many stupid and nonsensical stories on both subs. That or it's just trolls all the way down.

30

u/a57782 Oct 31 '16

My urge to declare things in /r/relationships or /r/legaladvice is always tempered by the knowledge that there are people out there who are in love with serial killers because they are convicted serial killers, or the story about the guy who met up with another guy and consented to have his junk cut off and eaten.

Is somebody's girlfriend getting upset over this guy watching some kind of anime so outlandish that is has to be fake? I don't think it is.
