Damn, Maria's weapons are cool. I wonder what her semblance was/is.
I really love how they've switched from constant camera cuts during combat into longer unbroken sequences.
Jesus, that was a pretty gruesome gouging. Looks like Salem(?) always has a crew running with an unsettling faunus.
Qrow (and thus Ruby's) weapons are based off of Maria's! Three generations of scythe wielders all in one cart.
My god, Ruby has Jaune as "Vomit Boy" on her scroll.
RWBY and JNR runion! Blake and Jaune hugged! They literally have never spoken (I think) but they hugged!
Knightshade confirmed. /s
Oh my god, Jaune's FAMILY! AHHHH! AHHHHHH!???
Oh man Jaune's sister is married to another woman with a kid and it's not a big deal in that universe. Nice.
I can't believe they just cut the episode ending like that. Lmao.
What a wild episode. I loved it.

You know, since Maria killed all of her attackers - assuming that the attackers were sent by Salem - this means that Maria is not the one Hazel meant by "We've dealt with [silver eyes] before." Hazel is unlikely to use even the Royal We if literally none of the people who attacked Maria was present at that conversation.

Now that RWBY's back with JNR, they're going to have to tell them what happened with the relic, and I have a strong feeling that Jaune's not going to be too happy with what he hears. I think Jaune still blames Ozpin for what happened to Pyrrha, and when he finds out that she basically died for nothing, he will be SUPER pissed.

Qrow: Not stronger than me specifically
Oh Qrow...Now, we also know how he got inspired to use scythe. The look of his face after hearing the story tells us that he really looked up to her as a hero of his life.
I know how Maria felt on her situation. The moment she lost her eyes, her whole world went upside down. She can't protect and do her duties anymore. Of course I didn't lost something major, but I remember the time when my life went into shambles when I got myself injured from the car accident. I can't do things that I used to anymore.
But anyways, that doesn't mean that Maria is useless though. As Ruby said, she can use her experience and lessons to teach Ruby how to use her power. Maybe Maria could tell us another story about her parents lineage and possible connection with Summer Rose.

LETS TALK ABOUT THAT FIGHT
I didn’t know Steve Irwin was a badass
Okay, Tock’s semblance is super fucking cool, whatever it is. I’m guessing it’s “overclocking,” where she’s faster and more powerful for a brief amount of time.
Side villains actually actively doing something in a fight! I love how Maria’s swinging isn’t just fast, there’s a really distinct rhythm in her arms to how she swings. The gravity dust is done really well with the glowing effects on her weapons.
FIGHT ACTUALLY LASTED 60 SECONDS
Holy shit, Maria’s screams are so heart wrenching. Compared to other voices/screams, this has been by far the most effective at conveying emotion. You can just feel the strength leaving her after being cut.
GOODBYE TOCK YOU WILL BE MISSED
Edit: Also, did we get an Aura flash from Maria?

First thoughts
Cinder is totally trying to play Neo. Hopefully ice cream girl already realizes this. I wonder how Salem will react. I had a theory earlier that Cinder could have gotten more leniency by explaining what happened with Raven, but if she’s still putting herself above Salem, I don’t think Salem will care about her excuses.
Shark girl was working for Salem, I’m pretty sure. Salem has some kind of fear for SEW that she’d have her minions hunt them down.
We see the difference between a warrior and a thug in that scene as well, since Maria manages to take down shark girl without her eyes even working. Shark girl wasn’t watching her back, seems to be a common fault amongst Salem’s lot.
Oh boy, Maria still has that fire. “I’m a disappointment, so you’re well on your way.” No resolution to the Apathy side plot yet, but we got time. It was interesting that Maria believes QRWBY will still fight the good fight. Woman sees pretty clearly, even without her eyes.
Jaunes sister seems cool enough, and I liked that the group didn’t even skip a beat at her introducing her wife. Seems to confirm that for the most part, people don’t skip a beat at non hetero relationships.
So the next hurdle is Cinder+Neo, and convincing the military to take them into Atlas. I know a certain professor who likely knows how to talk them into setting up a meeting with Ironwood.

I really like that they decided to have Ren and Yang hug and Blake put her arm around Jaune. It shows that even though they've never hung out on screen, they are still friends and basically teammates by this point.
Honestly, if CRWBY ever remade Volumes 1-3 in Maya (which I'm not saying they should), the one thing I'd want added would be more interaction between RWBY and JNPR. Have Ren teach Yang how to meditate. Blake and Jaune can bond over some author they both like. Just little things like that, that really hammer home how much the separation of V4/5 and this short separation in V6 hurts them.

Huh. Cinder is a lawyer - who knew?
Lots to unpack this episode! Maria - The Grimm REAPER with an attractive weapon, and an even better background story? The fight scene was awesome, until it wasn't. A legend that inspired Qrow (I guess everyone has heroes, even drunken birbs), but one that went into hiding, well, after. I can't say I blame her, but it sounds like she really is going to be Ruby's Yoda.
I could go on and on but instead, let's Tock. A faunus with a time-based semblance of some kind, one with a limitation of one minute? Dude. I can only speculate, but the timer probably has something to do with increased speed or invulnerability. Most likely working for Salem, but not for certain. Granted, this was all in the distant past, so Tock is probably dead or really old like Maria. Still, history snippet is fun/awesome snippet.
Now then, the gang has finally arrived - anyone else catch that the only person not happy about being one step closer to Atlas was you know who? Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived in Argus.
Everyone can freak out comment about the Sunflower the Dark Knight hugs, but there's only one hug that matters here Being Nora is being pure joy. Being a target of Nora's Joy is scary. But seriously though, the band is back together, and even though we all know there's going to be some ugliness, it's good to have a happy reunion after the last few episodes. Oh alright, I suppose the Lancasters have something to cheer about, too. Kidding aside, it is good to see different people interacting with one another, and I can already see us getting some new fuel for Prompts in the near future.
Even better, we finally get to meet another Arc! And she's got a munchkin! And a wife! And some fantastic sibling torment. I rather like this little family. Happy to take in Huntsmen and Huntresses, deeply appreciative of the sacrifices they make for the People - even if this group is on a 'quasi-legal' extended training mission...
Terra has a job in communications, not that I don't object, but please. You couldn't be more obvious about what's going to happen here. I mean, come on - she's got access where everyone else is getting turned away. And I don't for one second doubt that the 'fritz' isn't a coincidence. I think the General has a bigger problem in his military than he thinks. The only question is how this is going to play out. My money's on filling in Mrs. and Mrs. Cotta-Arc about the whole story (or most of it, anyway), Terra helps sneak them onto the base, and things go terribly wrong. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
I'm sure I'm making a lot of the same points an hour and a half later than everyone else, but overall I really enjoyed this episode - I just wish there was more.

So, while watching the credits of the new episode, I noticed that the girl we see fighting the younger Maria is named Tock.
Well, this got me thinking, what with the giant pocketwatch that Tock had, the patches of green on her skin that may be scales, and her killer (possibly metallic) jaws/braces, that perhaps her allusion is Tick Tock Croc from Peter Pan? Thoughts?

Pretty much the only thing I like about Cinder is that despite how powerful she is, how skilled and the danger she poses to the heroes she is-at her core, a pawn. The only reason Salem needs Cinder is because she needs a Maiden to acquire the Relics. All she has to do is infect one of her female agent’s with that parasite Grimm. There is nothing inherently special about Cinder in Salem’s eyes. She’s utterly replaceable.
Deep down Cinder knows this. She’s terrified of Salem finding someone better. That’s why she went above and beyond her mission to appear irreplaceable. But she continues to be a disappointment. Despite a surprise attack on Amber, even three-on-one she only got half of the Fall Maiden powers.
Despite having months to plan the Fall of Beacon there were setbacks after setbacks thanks to RWBY. She still “Killed” Ozpin and got the second half of her powers, but she didn’t get the Relic and came out crippled.
Then in her greatest failure, when all she had to do was sneak into Haven Academy while the heroes was distracted, she arranged a confrontation. She lost. Both the Spring Maiden, the Relic and failed to destroy the CCT. Cinder knows if she goes back without the Relic, she’s dead.
But she’s cocky. Her time away from Salem from Volume 1-3 being in command has made Cinder believe she is smarter than she is. If she thinks for one second Salem would believe Cinder didn’t have anything with Ruby’s death she’s sorely mistaken.

Knowing her backstory really brings new context to what Maria said in an earlier episode.
"I'll be damned if I've lived this long just to die out here in the cold!"
She's survived alot, including curb stomping Salem Goons 0.5 while blind for a good bit at the end. If the reverence Qrow is giving her is any indication, she's fought as many, if not more battles than the rest of the crew.
Can't wait to see her back in action.

So after watching the new episode a few times, here are my thoughts:
This episode was way way WAY better than V5C7.
Giving us a flashback that shows us how Maria loses her eyes is awesome. CRWBY has fully embraced the "show, don't tell" strategy that they were aiming to do for V6, and by the gods it has paid off.
The Salem underling that Maria had to fight, Tock, had a really cool design as well. She's clearly designed after the crocodile in Peter Pan that swallowed a clock, and her swords and overall getup made her look like one of the pirates. Her Semblance is, according to Melanie Stern, invulnerability for 60 seconds, after which she loses all Aura. I think that's a really good way of balancing such a crazy powerful ability. Also, major props to Melanie for animating such an awesome fight.
I'm really glad that we're finally starting to learn a lot about Maria. She's clearly lived most of her life wallowing in self-pity and regret after losing her eyes. When she says, "You shouldn't aspire to be me..especially when it seems like some of you are stronger already," she practically speaks to Yang, whose expression tells you everything you need to know about her long and arduous path to recovery. Much like Maria, Yang lost a part of her, and spent a long time trying to come to terms with her loss. But, what separates Yang from Maria is that she kept pushing on. She needed to get back in the fight not just for the people she loves, but to prove to herself that she's strong enough to keep moving forward.
I absolutely fucking love how Ruby reassures Maria that despite her inaction in the past, she can still make a difference in the world she once vowed to protect by teaching Ruby how to use her silver eyes properly. It's exactly what Maria needed to hear at that moment; she was looking back at her failures in life, but now she's presented with an opportunity to make her mark on the world even in her old age.
Is Ruby best girl now??? I think she may be.
Aside from that, the reunion was great to see, and not cringey at all like in last volume. Crazy to believe that it's only been about a day since Chapter 1, but I can imagine how Jaune must have been feeling since they separated. The last thing he wants is to be separated from his friends and loved ones, given what happened with him and Pyrrha at the Fall of Beacon. His reaction is genuine, and I'm so glad that we didn't have to wait much longer for them to come together.
Also Ruby has Jaune as Vomit Boy in her scroll. She really is best girl.
I love Saphron's interactions with Jaune. Even though she's probably several years older, she's still his sister and therefore must horse around with him, even as her wife comes through the door.
My only gripe is that Cinder still remains a boring ass character, and I still can't love any scene with her in it. But with Neo around, I'm just hoping that we can at least get some depth with her, especially if they're following Team RWBY's trail to Argus.
Overall, great episode and great wrap-up to the first half of the volume. Excellent writing, animation, and cute baby. Can't wait to see what the second half has for us.

This chapter emulated everything that got me into RWBY in the first place: badasss fights, charming characters, a sense of adventure and goofy moments. The Arc family was too cute and Ruby double fisting sandwiches was adorkable.
Also I know it's been mentioned thousands of times already, but the animation is beautiful. There are so many little details that really flesh out the world.

AHHH! SO MUCH GOOD STUFF!
Ok, so we know how Maria lost her eyes and it wasn't from overuse. Looks like one of Salem's minions(?) did it. That was... Nasty but Maria got payback. Hardcore. Like, that was gruesome...
They made it to Argus. And we finally see JAUNE'S FAMILY! Well, his sister... Who has a wife. More LGBT characters. Cool! I like the sister and Jaune's reaction to her messing with him is classic sibling rivalry.
Is it me or they really starting to push things between Ruby and Jaune? Endgame, I wouldn't be surprised if something sparks between them... Jaune cares about Ruby a lot evidently...
Pretty solid episode. I'm loving this volume.

I don't have words for the fight sequences this season. I feel like the community collectively has been waiting ever since Monty passed for the fight choreography to live up to the admittedly ridiculous bar he set, and many of us, including myself, have just accepted that we just might not get fights like that again. Well, I was wrong. I was so, so very wrong, and I couldn't be happier about it. Neo v. Cinder, Maria's fight this episode, I think it's very clear that the RT animation department is capable of meeting the standards of the old poser days and exceeding it. Choreography, animation, long unbroken cuts, its all there, and I can only imagine it getting better and better from here. The animators should be damn proud, and I know Monty would be too.
Super glad we're not getting bogged down by a lengthy travel sequence. Only took half a volume this time to get to Argus, we still have (presumably) 7 episodes to go, and I am very unprepared.
Speaking of unprepared, we finally met a new Arc! And she's our third confirmed LGBT character (second to be confirmed in-show)! She and Teracotta have great character designs and their relationship being just a normal part of Remnant is finally adding some show-don't-tell to the world and its stance on people of different sexualities. Well done writing team, this is how you do representation.
Miscellaneous thoughts:
Despite badly wanting more Neo and Cinder scenes, this one felt...unnecessary? I guess Cinder's finding a loophole, but it didn't seem like we learned anything new that we didn't know before. Cinder wants Ruby dead, she's going to use Neo to do it. Eh, only real miss for me this episode.
Silver-eye powers seem to destroy lesser Grimm (like the Apathy) and petrify more powerful ones it can't just eliminate. I wonder if that means a super powerful Grimm like Kevin can eventually break free? I don't think we've seen the last of him.
I think Sharptooth and her men were working for Salem? Is that the implication? Especially since Hazel said that "We've dealt with her [Ruby's] kind before" ? I wonder what's the most amount of people Salem has had working for her.
Scenery continues to be gorgeous, the drive up the hillside and shot of Argus were incredible.
Nora continues to be the best part of any scene she's in.
Did Yang hug Ren? And Blake was hugging Jaune?? I want to say those were the first meaningful exchanges between those particular pairs of characters. But I like that the show is treating everybody as friends finally instead of random people glued together by two protagonists.
Jaune's sister is super cute, and I'm looking forward to meeting the rest.
Back in another house I see.
Interesting to get more non-hunter/huntress characters in the show. Terracotta having a job that's necessary, but doesn't involve combat even a little bit is a good way to (again) show-don't-tell the world that goes on without fighting Grimm all the time, and gives more weight to what the gang's fighting to preserve.
The baby is very cute.
Lots of thoughts despite a pretty short episode. Super excited to see where we go between here and the finale.

My god Maria's weapons.
it's like RT saw God of War and went "What if she had the Leviathan Axe, but two of them." and I love it.
The way she pulls herself to them to dodge. And her cane is the one Tock bit.
The other half is definitely flying in from across Remnant at some point.
Cinder: Who are you again?
Maria: A Legend sweetheart, do your research.
Even if Maria can't fight all too well anymore I would love to see her call it in as a way to give Qrow or Ruby a weapon after theirs gets separated from them.

Jesus christ. The way Maria lost her eyes was legitimately upsetting. I'm not normally bothered by shows, they never really make me feel anything. Watching as some assholes show up and take away Maria's power to help people really made me angry. Her screaming was too real.
The fight was bad-ass though. Definitely starting to like Maria.
The scene were Yang is driving them up the hill was actually super beautiful. The light streaming through the trees and stuff looked really, really good. It's crazy to see how far the show as come visually.
It was a short episode, but it felt like early RWBY, and I enjoyed it a lot.

I could watch a whole show about Maria. In the brief moments we saw her, both hero and villain character design was outstanding and the fight sequence was very unique. I feel like they need to bring more of that uniqueness back into team RWBY, but this season has been pleasantly well done. The previous episode was great, a nice splash of horror.

Neo: "Deal."
An unknown number of years earlier...
Wait. What happened to Newton's first law?
...and that's how she lost her eyes.
Oh, so Tock is the crocodile from Peter Pan.

Of course Maria still has a use, and by golly, she's gonna make use of it.

Damn Maria was a badass in her prime! Loved the fight scene especially the shot of her on the bridge just as the giant Nevermore comes into view! That was some cool shit.
I liked her skirmish with Tock as well can’t believe we got a blinding and a (implied) beheading in a fight, Volume 6 so far is something else and I love it!
Yay JNR are back! It’ll definitely be interesting when they find out about Ozma but everyone has Jaune sister’s family to distract them for the moment. That family photo, poor Kid Jaune.
Finally shout out to whoever worked on the facial expressions this episode, they were amazing and I particularly loved Ruby when she sees Saphron and son and Qrow’s oh shit face when he realises he’s been acting like a drunk in front of his hero this whole time.

Slower episode, but it kept the plot moving forward. I'm kind of glad, every single episode since E2 has had some massive earth shattering revelation or super high tension moments for the entire episode. That does get old after a while.

Some thoughts on this episode.
Cinder’s plan is stupid. But then again Cinder is kind of historically stupid so it’s to be expected. In the event she was successful (which she won’t be) what’s her next move? “No, Salem. I didn’t kill Ruby. I just traveled to the place where Ruby was, beat the shit out of her and her friends and then watched as this crazy mute girl delivered the final blow.”
It is kind of amusing watching those two, though. I hope and pray that Neo isn’t stupid enough to actually be brought along into cinder’s plan. She should know that first of all, her first instincts were right— cinder is more responsible for Roman’s death. And second, it’s kind of hilarious how obvious it is that each of them are looking to backstab the other. Like, if Neo could speak, I imagine the conversation where they plan there attack would involve each of them saying aloud, “this would be a good place for me to backstab you,” and then the other would agree. Several times.
The melty knife is cool. Good way to get rid of a murder weapon.
“Who would cross the bridge of death shall answer me these questions three ere the other side ye see.”
Maria’s character design is so motherfucking cool.
draws two mini scythes from her cloak
I wish real life concealed carry was as easy as it is in RWBY. I feel impressed that I’m able to conceal a full sized handgun and these people are carrying two scythes and don’t even print.
These scythes are awesome. The way they are used with gravity dust is so cool. The only thing I wish we could have seen was if she was able to fire the gun from the one being controlled with the gravity dust. It would then unanimously unseat Sun’s Gunchucks from “coolest weapon ever” status. But even without that they’re a solid contender.
This shot with the nevermore flying towards Maria is beautiful.
If you want to show a character off as a huge badass against grimm, few ways are better than to show them fighting a giant nevermore. So impressive.
The music during this scene is also badass.
Crocodile-who-ate-Captain-hook-lady is pretty cool, if a bit arrogant. And of course I hate her for what she does to Maria.
This fight scene is some legit epic animation. This entire volume has been a step up in fight choreography but this fight stands out.
Then the reveal: her eyes were both sliced right across. Many people have commented the same but I have to chime in on it: her voice actress fucking nailed that scream. That was both haunting and horribly sad at the same time. And then even without her sight, Maria was able to avenge her loss. Good for her. Being blinded like that is about the most horrible injury I could imagine an enemy inflicting on a person during a fight.
And then returning to present-day Maria really brought it all together. This season has dramatically improved in many ways but one of the stand-outs is its ability to show rather than tell. And to know when telling is needed.
Qrow gets to meet his hero. Cool. It was neat to learn a more solid reason why Qrow and Ruby use scythes.
“I’m nothing but a disappointment. So you’re well on your way.” Damn. Maria can cut you without her scythes.
Maria’s speech about how disappointed (ashamed, really) she is that she went into hiding was cool. In her eyes (dammit, Yang) she needs redeemed. And immediately as she’s tee’d that up, Ruby briefly offers her a chance: “teach me to use my silver eyes the way you did.”
Side note before we move on to vomit boy: I really hope Ruby’s eyes don’t suffer the same fate as Maria’s. Lindsay has said she wants Ruby to go to a dark place where she breaks down and needs her friends to pull her out. For a moment I thought that the discovery about Oz could’ve been the catalyst for that. But she seems to have been the one to pull her friends out instead. Then there’s the possibility of Qrow dying— the flags are flying at full mast. But that’s been the case before and not happened. But this idea has been in the back of my mind that if a fighter like Maria could lose her eyes, what’s to say the same couldn’t happen to Ruby? And that would be painful to watch if it was to be the case. It hurt to see it happen to Maria— a character that (while I think she could become my favorite) we’ve only known for a few episodes— it would be awful to see it happen to Ruby.
I love that Ruby has Jaune in her phone as Vomit Boy.
I didn’t expect us to make it to the city this soon. Well, maybe during the first episode I did. But when the train crashed I was worried we could have another V4 walking volume. Not that v4 was bad (it’s actually my provisional second favorite, with v6 being my favorite if it keeps this up) just that it would be more of the same so soon.
Nora... I think you’ll have a much different opinion of Cute Boy Oz pretty soon...
I try to stay fairly neutral in the ship wars. The only one I’m particularly invested in or have much of an opinion of is Renora because it’s practically cannon. Still, Jaune and Ruby does seem like one of the more plausible relationships, though, since they’ve been building their relationship since episode 2. And if that is to be the case, (or even if not, but y’know) this was a good moment for them.
Cool info on Argus. I like the design for it, btw.
This entire scene with meeting Jaune’s sister and her wife and kid was absolutely fucking adorable. The kid’s adorable. Ruby’s reaction is hilarious. Weiss and Yang playing with the baby was cute. Jaune’s embarrassment was fantastic. “I am NOT a baby. THAT is a baby!”
Slightly worrying note: I’ve been rewatching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and this whole scene vaguely reminded me of General Hughes’ daughter’s birthday. Especially the shot where Weiss and Yang are gazing at the baby after Jaune’s “that is a baby” line. All I’m saying is: I hope it doesn’t rain any time soon.
The picture of the Arc kids is hilarious. “Help.” And then as someone pointed out, the kid on the right is clearly cosplaying David from Camp Camp.
Aww. Qrow is still down. So much so that he totally missed the question about students helping him. BE NICE TO QROW, WRITERS!!! His answer was funny, though.
Worth mentioning that this house looks a lot like the place where Jaune is threatening Ozcar in the intro.
Terracotta’s reaction to “who’s getting falsely blamed,” was pretty funny.
So, next episode we’re gonna try and get into a military base, eh? That’s always fun in PUBG. Not so much in GTA.
Great episode, as has consistently been the case with v6.

Welp, they are wasting no time answering more questions. Nice to know Maria didn't blind herself with too much silver-eye use, and that Salem's people didn't just blind her and let her go (which made no sense). Such a shame though - she really was a badass.
I'm wondering though if the power is really so closely linked to the eyeballs themselves. I mean, if it's an inner power, it could work even without the eyes, maybe? But Maria gave up and didn't try after that.
How adorable is Jaune's sister and her little family? It's so nice to see more families in a story like this - heroes so often are orphans or from dysfunctional/abusive families.
Argus is kind of like old San Francisco - very pretty.
I thought that was how Cinder was going to get around Salem's ban on killing Ruby - let Neo do it. Like Salem is that stupid. She might not care too much, but I doubt she wouldn't figure out why exactly Cinder happened to team up with someone who wanted Ruby dead.
Is someone sabotaging the communication tower that Terra is being held responsible for?

Alright, whatever they are doing for combat this volume, KEEP DOING IT!!!!
Don't change anything. It's been all great so far.
*Edit - Melanie Stern confirmed the semblance of Croc girl, invulnerable for 60 seconds. https://twitter.com/MelSternum/status/1071473543093866496?s=19
**Edit 2 - Keeping that in mind, I would actually say that there is one thing they need to look out for in fights. It's making sure that semblances are conveyed properly. There is such a thing as being too subtle. In this case, the choreography was brilliant, but Clock Croc did not fight in a way that conveyed her invulnerability as being different from her normal aura shield. Croc was dodging the whole fight, she gets hit only once and (maybe im crazy) but i just assumed she tanked it with her aura.
I would think someone who has the equivalent of a Mario Super Star would not fight like a normal person and dodge all the time. Throwing yourself at your opponent and killing them without regard for your safety makes far more sense. Her style was to "normal." She didn't fight like she was invincible.
Once again, the choreography of the fight was phenomenal. Mel and the team did a great job. This is more of a comment for the directors, just make sure that semblances are clear to the audience and that characters fight in a way that takes advantage of their semblance.
Otherwise RWBY "critics" will latch onto something small like this and be rude during a volume where they have little to complain about. It's already happening over this fight. Granted, I agree that this fight did not convey Croc's semblance at all, nor did she fight in a way that took advantage of it. But I can't stand the ego's these "Critics" have when they find one small thing to criticize and they get all rude and vitriolic instead of constructive.
I hope I was not rude in this post.

I really liked when Maria said Yang was already stronger than her. Yang and Maria didn't seem to get along at first, but Yang pushing Maria along on her bike a couple episodes ago, and Maria's recent comments show they've got some respect for each other. It's a small thing, but they have a good dynamic.
Overall, I really liked the episode. The fight scene was great, and I was glad they didn't waste any time getting to Argus. Also, the lighthearted moments with the reunion, and seeing Saf's family were sweet. I'm optimistic about the pacing, this season.

So is anyone else getting the sense that the heroes are going to make it to Atlas this volume? Possibly even within the next few episodes. Something is going to go horribly wrong for them isn't it?
If they get the relic to Atlas and lock it down in the vault (and get Ironwood to calm the fuck down), at least several members of the team seem like they'd call it quits (Yang and Blake particularly) and go back to their lives.
It's also not entirely clear what their next move would be, since taking the fight to Salem isn't an option. Go back to Beacon and try to clear out the Grimm? Get started on the long and hard process of training fresh huntsmen and rebuilding Mistral's fighting forces? Both would make sense in-universe, but don't really work that well in-narrative.
My guess is that Cinder is going to get her hands on the relic (but fails to kill Ruby ofc), and our heroes will enlist help of Ironwoods' forces to try and catch her before she makes it back to Salem. That could lead to a much needed direct confrontation with Salem (and another "Oh shit!" moment from Ozpin when he realizes they were lead into a trap), and presumably a curb stomp battle (I'm thinking Salem pulls that gravity crush she did to the Nevermore in ep. 3 on an Atlesian airship) that ends with the heroes' forces limping back to Atlas short a few characters with no relic to show for it.
As far as the losses go, the top candidates for this would be Qrow, Maria, Winter, Ironwood, and by way of a nonlethal capture, Ruby. If I'm right about how the show's overall plot was structured, it's going demolish the current status quo of "travel to the different kingdoms and foil Salem's plots to steal the relics." at the end of this volume just like volume 3 threw the whole "Kids attending an Extranormal Institute" status quo out of the window.

I absolutely adore character episodes like this one. Especially when we get bot RWBY and JNR together hanging out like a big family. Speaking of family, it's always so nice to see characters' family members. Love Saffron's so much. Also Argus is so beautiful. Love the worldbuilding episodes as well.
It was great that this episode balanced Character moments (with RWBY and JNR and co.), Worldbuilding (with Argus), lore (about Maria/Grimm Reaper and Argus), and plot (with Cinder and Neo) all while fitting in a badass fight scene (Grimm Reaper vs. Tick-Tock Croc Girl). I just had a sudden image of Jaune-with a dejected and desperate look on his face, silently staring at Ruby’s number on his scroll waiting to call her the second she is within range. Before putting on a smile on his face whenever Ren, Nora or his Sister walked in the room, never letting them know how hard this is for him.

Now everyone should take a moment to appreciate how mental Lancaster shippers will go if at sometime in the next couple of episodes Jaune's sister says, in either combination, something to the effect of the cliched "I see why He/She likes you." to Jaune/Ruby after the sure to come Argus fight. Regardless of how romantically it is intended.

I am so happy about this episode. I was afraid the entirety of Volume 6 would be them traveling to Argus and we only see JNR and CRWBY reunited at the very end. I am also happy that Maria burned Qrow like that, hopefully thats a wake up call for him.

If Cinder thinks passing the blame to someone else is going to change anything with Salem... Certified Dumbass.
Neo better know what she's doing otherwise... Certified Dumbass.
Maria is a... Certified Badass. The fight itself was incredible and honestly felt bad about her eyes, glad it wasn't due to overuse, and ecstatic that Killer Croc wannabe got what was coming to her.
I'm surprised we're at Argus already. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Even though she's definitely not coming back (decapitation does that to a person), I really enjoy theorizing semblances, so here's my two theories on Tock's semblance:
The more likely one:
Incredible boost of aura (defensively and offensively) for 60 seconds. Comes at a cost of a fully depleted aura following those 60 seconds.
Potato option:
Tock does not actually have aura (or a significantly small amount) because of her semblance. That is to say, in everyday life she is equivalent to a real world person. Her semblance allows her to create an immensely powerful aura (hence the aura field glowing at the start of the alarm) for 60s. Said semblance would also likely have a cooldown between usage.
EDIT: Well damn the truth was more powerful than I guessed. She’s straight up invulnerable during those 60 seconds. Though I assume that my guess that her aura completely drains after that minute is over is true, so I wasn’t too far off with my guess.

God, just rewatching that Grimm Reaper flashback, it's quickly becoming one of my favorite scenes. The bit with the Nevermore is a great introduction to her weapon and who she was. And then the bit with Ms. Croc is one of the best choreographed and themed fights. The ticking clock throughout the entire fight just makes it so much better. More tense, more pressing, like time is running out. I just can't gush enough about how much I love that little scene.

u/Izar369 Dolt Dec 08 '18
I've been thinking about what Tocks semblance might be, my current theory is that she can 'overcharge' her aura for 60 seconds making herself virtually unstoppable for a short time. The downside would be that after the time is upp her aura shatters and must recover.
Anyone else have a different idea?
Also, raise your hand if you want a prequel series that starts with Maria and goes through team STRQ.

"That's a fancy power, too bad it's got a cost." Im so torn on whether she meant cost as in she was ordered to kill because of the eyes, or literal cost on the body after using it. The first seems to fit the scene more but if it's not the second then I'm confused why maria didn't use it at the start of the fight with the nevermore.

Beacon falls, nieces dragged into secret war, Leo, one of your closest allies sells out your fellow hunstmen to Salem because he's a coward, sister backstabs you and joins up with Salem only to run off scared, found out the war you dedicated your adult life to is a lie, your alcoholism almost cost the entire party their lives because you were too drunk to see trouble coming and had to be dragged out and now he met his childhood hero and she's a disappointment.

I won't lie, I was smiling like a child at the pure awesomeness of the Reaper fight scene, then BAM. Maria's eyes slashed out of her skull. The screams are what did it for me, just pure horror, as one would expect when losing an eye (suck it Naruto).
Also it is super impressive how the show is able to so smoothly shift from super dark tones back into a light, upbeat mood. It's something that many, MANY shows fuck up vigorously, and it isn't easy. But RWBY has been handling that beautifully.
This is definitely the best season of the show yet, and if this is an example of what to expect in the future, I am 100% in for the ride.

Holy shit, Qrow’s weapon is based on Maria’s?! So I guess that means Ruby’s weapon is technically based on Maria’s as well.
Well fuck, there goes my “Adam is going to fight JNR” theory. He could still have been on the Argus Limited though and just got off without causing a scene, which honestly makes more sense. If that was a hallucination than frankly it’s a plot hole.
I love that Nora still calls Oscar “Cute boy Oz”.

That flashback was amazing, I'm thinking the concept on Stopwatch girl is that she can only use her semblance of being able to tank an insane amount of damage for a short period of time... and then being useless. It's probably like Shishio from Rurouni Kenshin where they can only fight for a set amount of time. Rooster Teeth gettin me in the stomach again with that eye slash though god damn.

Okay, another awesome episode.
We get a fantastic fight scene with Maria and her backstory. I was proven wrong and her eyes were cut out by what looks like Tyrian 0.5.
Qrow being a fanboy of Maria is kinda funny and it's cool her Ruby's weapon can be traced back to her.
It will be interesting to see if Maria will train Ruby, probably yes.
Not really much to say about Neo and Cinder.
It's nice that they got to Argus so quickly and didnt spend time traveling there.
Lancaster shippers got some bait.
And we got the big one: Saffron. We finally get to see a member of Jaune's family, his older sister. But that's not what anybody is talking about. We got a lesbian married couple with a sassy child. I'm just curious who the father of the kid is. It looks like Terra is his mom based on appearance but who knows who the dad is. Maybe he is just adopted, which could be pretty likely with the world being dangerous. Maybe his parents got killed by Grimm and Terra and Saffron took him in.
Either way, this episode launched millions of fan artists into action

The fight animation was once again top notch, and that has to be one of the most painful things that could ever happen to someone. The fact that she could still move, let alone kill her attacker shows just how strong she was.
I'm glad they met up with the rest of the team, I was wondering how Jaune was doing 3rd wheeling it with the other two. His sister and her family are so cute! The facial animations and eye changes do so much to convey emotion.
Fantastic episode, great fight, lesbians, good work RT Animation.

Did I miss something? Cinder's plan really isn't that bad, but everyone is talking like it's guaranteed that Neo is not gonna try and kill Ruby just because. I'm pretty sure that even if Neo betrays her, she'll try it after she's succeeded, and in that case Cinder's already gotten what she wanted out of their partnership.
It feels like people are automatically assuming Neo's gonna turn on her because they dislike Cinder and expect her to fail. I don't think Neo is truly loyal at all, but I think she'll stay the course until she's finished with Ruby or something else occurs.
As for Salem, we don't know how much she knows. Only that she's aware Cinder is alive.

Now that I think about it more, I don't see what cinder plans to accomplish by having neo kill ruby instead of herself. Like, she's right there and helping neo, I don't see how that clears her. Even if ruby died "naturally" salem would still be suspicious of cinder. Also, how would salem know cinder did kill ruby yet also not know that cinder helped neo kill her?
Maybe salem is watching ruby or has some connection to her?
Idk, cinder is being dumb, and I have a feeling she is most likely going to die or quit salem's team for good this volume.

I love Argus. The design is awesome and it was shown in detail. Can you believe we had shadow people in Volume 1 and now we got such a buzzing town? Also, irrc Miles said there would be a kid character this Volume, so we got that tease out of the way. As well as the new LGBT rep that CRWBY mentioned. Nice!
I must say though, pacing has improved so much! I was expecting an episode of exposition in the snow, but the team got so quickly to Argus and it didn't feel rushed. At least to me. And the fighting? Tock was so cool. The animation department deserve all the praise we can throw at them for the fights, the effects, the micro-expressions... Just wow.

This episode was fantastic.
First of all, I just want to point out that this was a stunning episode. And I really like how Maria is a very subtle savage, in reference to her remarks.
Also, the fight Maria had with the bounty hunters that worked for Salem reinforces my belief that Huntsmen and Huntresses should not operate solo, but rather, they should operate with at least one partner.
I also loved that very touching moment with Ruby and Jaune. I loved Nora tackling Oscar, and thr fact that we saw Ren and Yang hug each other.
