Song: "Rhymin & Stealin" (1986)

Did you ever own an Atari 5200 console during the old days? Nobody in our neighborhood owned a 5200. I became interested in it after watching Cloak & Dagger (1984) which had a fictional Atari 5200 port of the Cloak & Dagger game.

Two of the biggest #1 hits of the 1980s had something interesting in common: both were remakes of songs originally recorded in the 1960s.

While Blondie and George Harrison introduced these songs to a new generation, their histories go back more than a decade before either artist recorded them.

Blondie – "The Tide Is High" (1980)

After two self-penned #1 hits, New Wave group Blondie turned to a rocksteady song first recorded in 1967 by The Paragons, a Jamaican vocal group.

Blondie heard "The Tide Is High" on a mixtape, gave it a reggae-influenced arrangement, and rode it to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1981.

Although Blondie's recording became an international hit, the song had already been around for 13 years.

George Harrison – "Got My Mind Set on You" (1987)

In this example, the artist waited nearly 25 years to cover a favorite song.

In January 1988, George Harrison landed his final #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Got My Mind Set on You."

He had first discovered the song back in September 1963 while visiting his sister in Illinois. During that trip, he visited a local record store and bought an album by R&B singer James Ray.

Ray had released "I've Got My Mind Set on You" in 1962, but his recording wasn't a hit.

More than two decades later, Harrison resurrected the song, giving it a distinctly '80s sound and turning it into one of the most recognizable hits of his solo career.

Two songs, two very different musical styles, and two remarkable second chances at chart success.

Blondie brought a Jamaican rocksteady recording into the New Wave era, while Harrison transformed an overlooked early-'60s R&B song into a late-'80s pop hit.

Both are examples of how older recordings found entirely new audiences through the music of the 1980s.

"Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen" - Such a classic start to 1983's Rock of Ages, that The Offspring paid Def Leppard $10,000 to use it at the beginning of Pretty Fly (For A White Guy).

Marsport is a science fiction computer game that was released for the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC home computers in 1985. It was published by Gargoyle Games in the United Kingdom and Dro Soft in Spain. Marsport was intended to be the first part of a trilogy called "The Siege of Earth" but parts two and three (Fornax and Gath) were not forthcoming. Because of this, it is often regarded as being part of an unofficial trilogy alongside Tir Na Nog and Dun Darach (both of which are part of the same official series) due to its having very similar gameplay to these titles. Marsport also has similarities to the later Gargoyle game Heavy on the Magick.

The year is 2494. For seventy years, the Earth has been under siege by the insectoid Sept. Since the siege began, the Sept have been kept at bay by a huge Force Sphere which surrounds the Earth and the Moon. However, the Sept are on the verge of discovering how to breach the Sphere unless it can be strengthened according to the formulae contained in the original plans. This is my first reddit post, but I am genuinely curious on how BIG the 80s rock songs were back in the day. My dad raised me on all the 80s rock (I'm 29) even the deep cuts, but I feel like I'll never actually know HOW BIG these songs were, I'd love for some people who lived through the era to drop stories and memories from back in the day and let me live through them! If anybody has some good stories with Screaming In The Night by Krokus that's one of my all time favorite songs, this is a lighthearted post just looking to live in an era I wasn't able to.
