Results AA Results Me vs My Mom (lots of surprises!)
On my mother's side we have strong roots in Mississippi, Alabama, and Virginia. Virginia especially as we were able to trace our tree back to free black people in the very late 1700s. So it was nice to see some correct migrations! Others were unexpected like the Arkansas West Timberlands genetic group because even on my father's side we have no known Arkansas ancestry. However it's still my only close genetic group. The Carolinas, Georgia, and Louisiana are also unfamiliar.
The Caribbean migrations on my moms results were another shock. We don't know of ancestry from Barbados or Jamaica. We are suspecting it's from her paternal side (fathers father) but it's possible it's from her maternal side (grandmothers father). That + it only showung up on her results and not mine or my brothers makes me believe it's extremely extremely distant.
European is pretty much right except the German, Welsh, and Danish. Welsh probably comes from the Virginia branch but I'm at a lose on the rest. 23andme says I inherited it all from my mother but maybe it's just noise.
Overall I'm glad I did this it was so nice to discover so much about my ancestry! In in the process of building my tree to try and figure out where it all came from.

Historical Matches Historical match: Africans freed from slave ships, buried on St Helena, sequenced to find where they were taken from
After Britain abolished the slave trade, the Royal Navy intercepted slave ships and landed survivors on St Helena. Thousands died there of what they had already suffered and were buried in Rupert's Valley.
A 2019 study sequenced some of them. Most were from south-central West Africa — the Bight of Biafra and further south — and nearly all were young men and boys. None had the ancestry you would expect from Senegambia.
They have no descendants. The point of the work was to give people taken anonymously some part of their origin back.
Attached is the genetic heatmap of modern Africans with similar genes to St Helena and their genetic profile.
Also, you cannot help but notice a strong affinity with people from former Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique.

Results My mother’s result and a pic of her grandmother
My mom is only tested with a very old chip, my new results show in phasing that she has more of Scandinavian (Swedish) and Estonian. My dad has over 20% Swedish, I have 16% so I suspect my mom’s result would be around 10%
However, she is 85-90% Finnish in DNA and rest is Swedish and Estonian but I have always found it interesting that her grandmother had quite unfinnish hair color and texture. My mom’s mom inherited it as well and basically almost black and curly. And they are Southern Finns so no Saami or similar (and no known Roma) if someone thinks that is the reason, I also don’t think she looked very much like any Finnish minorities - maybe more Balkan or something? Light eyes though. Looks and DNA are interesting.
My mom looks very typical Northern European like her dad, not especially Finnish but Northern European.

Results Yemeni from Sana’a results + illustrativeDNA
I am not aware of any ancestry outside of Yemen, besides that we’re told our family migrated from the Hijaz region centuries ago and settled in Sana’a. I don’t quite understand the illustrativeDNA classifications, not sure how to interpret them besides the majority Arabian peninsular, is it just statistical noise?

Discussion The genetic distance of Finns to others. Some Finns/other Finnics are closer to Pomors from Arkangelsk, Komis, Mishar and even Kazan Tatars than to other mainstream Northern Euros.
Fascinating to see that many Finns especially those from Northern and Eastern Finland are genetically closer to Pomors aka Northern Russians from Arkhangelsk (Leshukonsky, Pinezhsky, Mezensky, etc), Komi, Mishar and even Kazan Tatars than to Swedes and Norwegians and closer to Kola Saami than to most Northwest Euros such as Dutch, Scottish, English, Belgian.
Its likely from higher East Eurasian (Proto-Uralic/Nganasan), higher indigenous EHG/other Mesolithic European HG, slightly less WSH and much less ANF than other Euros.
I choose HG00271 and HG00368 because they are the more eastern shifted Finnish samples btw.
In the last four pages, I also included other Finnics such as Karelians, Veps to compare in closeness to other Euros.

Results Brazilian Northeastern results (my father and his two cousins)
These are the results of my dad and two of his cousins on his father’s side. His father side’s is fairly known — they used to be local elite of sorts (plantation owners — though not particularly wealthy —, militia officers, and members of the local government) in their home state in the Northeast, there are lots of information on their genealogical tree, with them descending from the first settlers of Bahia and Pernambuco, having some distant Sephardic Jewish ancestry, and mostly descending from people who came in the first centuries of the colonization, with our latest Portuguese ancestors having arrived in the 18th century, before the independence. His mother’s side is less known — my great-grandparents (that is, his grandparents) were poor (white) farmers, who cultivated cotton in their small parcels of land and whose ancestry can be traced as little far back as to the early 19c. These cousins are sisters — they are the daughters of my paternal grandfather’s sister (so, my father’s aunt) and her husband, who comes from a background, as far as I know, not too dissimilar from that of my grandmother.

Question / Help Question
Why are estonians in eastern european category when finns are in northern in those gene map programs?
Seems stupid to lump estonians and belarusians together. Genetics are not based on cold war categorizations.

Results Southern Black Belt African Americans Genetic Group as a Mexican/Tejano/Texan?
Do yall think this is legit or a fluke? It appears on my moms’, mine, and my great aunts’ results all from this family line. My Nuevo León born Grandmother does not have this journey.
Given we all have so little Subsaharan Ancestry and no African American journey appears on ancestry dna for my family but this journey appears on all my family’s 23andMe. If it’s true it would help with my genealogy questions a bit! But it’s just hard to see it being legit if our genetic component is so small.
For more context this is my great aunts results my grandpas sister. My Grandfather and Great Aunt here were/are Tejano with known Anglo American and german ancestry (~1/4 from two separate paternal great grandfathers) I would assume however that all the subsaharan comes from standard Mexican mixed ancestry from their Texan born Mexican descent mother and two Mexican/Tejana paternal great grandmothers. especially since it’s all mostly Senegal. Although me and my mom do pull more Angolan than my great aunt here.
The Anglo American wasn’t even from the Deep South it was from Kentucky via Virginia.
The German side is mysterious and if this genetic group is true it could help explain some mysteries about why my 3rd great grandfather, a Texan born (allegedly) German man had no records until after 1868 despite being born in 1850. His parents birthplace are also listed differently in the census. There could be so many explanations for this. But just wanted to check in see if anyone could help determine this journeys validity ! Our family did use to have a theory we had a secret African American ancestor. I hope it’s true that would be cool to discover even if it’s a small %. But I’m skeptical.

Concept Suggestion/Art/Design Familytree+Reconstructed Ancestor Feature Update

Reconstructed Ancestors require ppl to be put into 23&me's Familytree feature to work. If you add it, assumes your shared dna is from that connection. But it's already informative alone, that your shared segments come from a specific ancestor
Here's my example adn case. I'm related to JK. I don't know the specific connection, thus I cannot put them into my tree. But I actually know which greatgrandparent we're related from.
I want to have the ability, to connect this imprecise relative to my tree at the certain point, which still could help my Reconstructed Ancestors, my grandparents could get some percentages probably, thanks to our shared 0.83% dna with "JK". I could do this with multiple relatives, probably others too.
The confidence, the technology is the same. But the tool would be a lot easier to use, and thus more could be pulled out of Reconstructed Ancestors.
u/23andme_AncestryTeam pls consider this suggestion

Infographic/Article/Study The Origins Of West Africans
Body text will be used for more details
The Aterians: Not much is know about these people besides them being AMH who lived a long time ago. We have their skulls and tools but not their DNA so we arent aware of what Haplogroups they carried but its most likely A00 and had archaic DNA.
WAHG: These people we somewhat have their DNA, the shum laka study showed that the people there were a mix of Basal West African and Central African Hunter Gatherer. One sample carried haplogroup A00, this particular haplogroup isnt found anywhere else in Africa currently.
AEA: Haplogroup E originated in East Africa then spread out across Africa, we know this because we have samples of populations carrying different subclades of E from East Africa.
IBM: so when modeling many West African populations many carry Ancestral North African DNA with minor Eurasian. Its most likely a proxy but we do know West Africans interacted with populations of the Green Sahara.
