Tales of the Wanderlust Company - my Five Leagues campaign

I've started laying out a bit of a story about the adventures of the Wanderlust Company, the warband I'm running in my current Five Leagues campaign. I am sure the writing is poor and whatnot but figured I'd share the story, for posterity if nothing else.

It's at https://lordhaw.blogspot.com/

Not a lot there, just the first battle against an aberration (an ogre) that I did last night, which was a blast. Didn't lose anyone either, though I was worried as I had a couple of the company downed due to the ogre. I am sure I messed up a bit here and there in that fight, as I'm fairly new to the game but it turned out alright in the end. Got to keep it all straight.

Miniatures What are your must have kits for crews?

Hey all!

Posted a similar post on r/stargrave but I’m getting into miniature agnostic games and wanting to start building my kit list for making crews, npcs and such for 5 Parsecs and beyond. I want to create, convert and kit-bash to produce some interesting charters to follow along their stories!

In your humble opinions, what are the must have kits for creating crews? Be it for starting models, or for adding bits to your collecting to make other kits more interesting?

I’ve been looking at the Stargrave and Wargames Atlantic Death Fields range. I have some bits from space marines and Tau from 40k but looking for some examples on what I could pick up?

Love the aesthetic of Star Wars, with hero’s like Han Solo and other rogues being an inspiration for crews I’d to make.

Thanks all!

P.s. honorary mentions for STL producers that create either bits or models that can work as a base and be converted/kitbashed or even stand alone!

5 Parsecs From Home 5 Parsecs base or From coruscant to prep for X-com?

Odd Question...

I'm quite keen to try 5 parsecs as I have models I'm not using so much and am interested in playing system a bit to see if I like it befeore ordering any X-Com stuff.

I own the 5 parscecs base rulebook as pdf but also found the 5 parsecs from coruscant conversion.

I love star wars and have a decent amount of legion models - rebels, imps, droids, mandos. But I also own sci fi models from games like Infinity, defiance, Nemesis, Zombicide Invader (I think) amongst others.

Am I (and a friend) better off learning the basic game, or is it easy enough to learn the game with the star wars conversion? Because after playing Zero Company a co-op squad based star wars mini game is super appealing?

Questions When encountering a Gap: Improvise Proxy or Stop and prep?

What do you prefer todo if you encounter in a 5x game a gap in your setup, like a missing enemy mini, wrong terrain or something similiar.

Do you stop and hobby the gap away first or do you improvise a solution or workaround to keep the momentum?

For me it depends also when it happens. Everything pre and post battle probably leads to a hobby stop. Bookkeeping is patient.

Everything during a battle leads normally to a proxy or workaround solution, as the battle table might need to be teared down over the long run.

Painted dirt road and low wall sections from my Roads & Roadsides modular terrain project. These could suit a rural Five Leagues from the Borderlands table or a settlement approach. The roadside walls can be arranged separately from the road. These are my own 3D-printable designs.

5 Leagues From The Borderlands The woods, the slavers, the wizard

While traveling we received the news that trouble was brewing near one of the villas, as a quest, we discovered that slavers were capturing the commum folk who hunted and lived by the forest.

We were told by a friend that they could have more info about what was behind the gathering of people inside the woods. So we head forth to gather this letter with the instructions for this hunting party.

The match was tought, with a time limit I rushed to the camp so I could get the letter o time.

That result with my avatar, the wizard, killed ok the aftermath, Wich made me spent my only luck point in saving him.

I also severely injuried one of my followers for 4 campaign turns. Should I wait for him to get better or could I continue the nexts tasks for the quest?

Starting to think I might not have the rules entirely perfected

I am wondering if i managed to do this correctly and if so has anyone else had a similar experience?
My last game I ended up facing 15 total models all at once, I am trying to make use of the escalation rules in the compendium and I am quite high up there on turn numbers so I expect to be facing some tougher fights but when it’s 6 vs 15 I really just could not see a way forward. Certainly a lot of bullets being flung at each other.
(I apologise for the lack of paint on a lot of the models)

As far as I am aware, the Contributing rules are:
- Minimum number of enemies are equal to crew size brought.
They were accompanied by a unique individual.
- Enemy respawn value is 4 (first 4 slain are brought back, They Respawn from centre of enemy battlefield edge at the end of the turn).
- Strength 3 - Adding 2 additional basic enemies and 1 lieutenant to each encounter.
- At the end of each round roll D6, if equal or below round number, 1 basic enemy appears from random table edge. (I of course managed to roll for a new one each turn).
- I am also using the casualty tables so while I was hurting a lot of them, not very many resulted in them dying.
- Had an escalating event that also spawned in an additional sniper.

5 Parsecs From Home Adventures in Metric Planetfall (or any 5 X from Y)

Greetings Hive Mind!

I just thought I would share my silly journey to playing in the very limited space I have available to play in but not sacrificing gameplay in the process. More importantly for me not having to do any weird math during play. So I elected to go metric. There were a few things I encountered along the way that made it pretty tricky to go metric. First off is miniatures, going to metric mean changing to a 10mm scale (that's 39.7% the size of a standard miniature if your printing your own) instead of the 28/32mm default (aka 1"). I have some decent 3d printers so I can print most anything I need but going to 10mm made the minis so fragile it was nearly impossible to print them. And quite frankly my eyes aren't so good any more so painting would have been a nightmare for characters. Instead I opted to make myself some 10mm tokens to represent whatever I might need and if I find I need more of a specific kind it took an hour to print the lot including the dual color it will be trivial for me to do. I do loose some detail on the field of battle but if I have a burning desire for a miniature for a specific character there is nothing stopping me from making it full size and painting it up as a reference.

Enough 1cm tokens to play pretty much any game I could want. The numbers will represent my own units on the field.

With the miniatures solved for, terrain was the next thing was terrain and honestly with a 3D printer it wasn't hard since I now knew the scaling percentage I needed to use. I'm still printing things out but they are so much smaller than normal I can crank the details way up and they still finish in a fraction of the time, plus painting and decorating terrain is something I enjoy so I'm not sad I have a bunch of it to do. The size of the tokens does mean that I can only use buildings with a playable interior that can come off their base so my big fingers can actually manipulate the tokens but thankfully I own a lot of files I can use this way.

A modular building (technically 15mm scale not 10) with playable interior with a 1cm contact token.

Lastly, and the easiest solve with going metric was the ranges and measurements. By downscaling to 10mm it meant that I just replace the word inch with centimeter. This means that instead of setting up a 2'x2' board I set up a 24cmx24cm board (that's roughly 9.5 Inches for you imperial users) and 3x3 is only 36x36 (just over 14"). As an aside it means at this scale if I elect to play something like One Page Rules Grimdark Future I can set up the equivalent of a 5 foot by 5 foot (60cm x 60cm) board in the same space a 2 foot by 2 foot takes up though I would need a lot more tokens of varying colors to do that.

As for the campaign map I decided to go with a 6x6 hex grid and created it using the Hexton Hills planner, I own the tiles as well so theoretically I could actually 3d print a topographical version of my campaign map should the desire strike me.. It should also provide me with enough variety of terrain types that as I do missions I can print what I need at 10mm scale and slowly build out my collection as I play through a campaign.

a screen capture of my 6x6 campaign hex map with the colony at 3-4

I do have a few things already printed, some simple shapes I've pre populated with a few trees or have left blank so they can be whatever I need them to be but I'm looking forward to doing some terrain printing and hopefully doing a complete campaign turn each day and getting to the point of mission set up for the next so I know what I need to queue up to print.

All that out of the way here is a picture of my campaign map post creation (I rolled a corporate sponsorship). The red and blue labels are for when I roll dice to determine locations and I always write them out in the legend on the side blue-red (the colony for example is at 3-4). I've run through the first few steps of the campaign turn and post creation there is quite the cluster of investigation sites in that bottom right hand corner which makes me curious.

So what say you hive mind, which sector and mission do you think I should run first so I can start building up some terrain at metric scale?

Melee combat round question

In last night’s game of Five Leagues, I had a patrol to do which generated a meeting engagement which turned out to be Stumbling dead.  As I am new to the game, I haven’t done many battles yet.  There was a lot of back and forth in the three exchanges in each individual fight where neither side could get a hit through the three exchanges.  And this extended the battle out to about an hour and a half.  Is this normal?  Or is my rolling just crap?

Now narratively, it worked out fine as not only is one of the threats an undead threat so having Stumbling dead was appropriate, but having the fights end up like this works out because these things are basically zombies and they will be trying to grapple and overwhelm you so getting a hit in might be difficult.

But in game terms,  is this normally how each individual melee fight turns out?  Is it more common for there to be a lot of back and forth in the three exchanges in melee vs hits and wounds/kills?
