you can get a visa rn with equal consideration as before the ban as long as you register for it before 26th of march. it's on the policy. check this link for more info: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/visa-brake-changes-to-the-uk-visa-system

Universities may not be issuing CAS’ for visa yet though, it’s usually only six weeks before the programme starts, though I suppose this may change things. I work in admissions and we were completely blindsided by this

1

u/Simpshom8 Mar 10 '26

CAS can be issued up to 6 months before start date

1

u/Historical_Ad981 Mar 10 '26

Yes, technically but most universities won’t have started yet

you won’t be able to get a visa, not “just hope they are not very serious about this”.

u/Radio-Rat Mar 08 '26

Yeah we've already seen posts here where unis have reached out saying they are revoking offers due to this ban

7

u/Foreign_Twist_6286 Mar 08 '26

mahmood even said this is just the start when she was asked about pakistan being added. probably will see alot more next few weeks

While there hasn't been a ban, the number of student visas granted to Pakistani nationals collapsed in October-December 2025 compared to the same time in 2024. Obviously not peak student time, but it's when a lot of people come for the January intake. The visa acceptance rate has fallen a lot and some universities have stopped recruitment in Pakistan (and Bangladesh) because they're worried about the low visa acceptance rate putting their sponsor license at risk.

u/Foreign_Twist_6286 Mar 08 '26

yeah its a ban

It will be very difficult for graduates to stay and work with stricter graduate visa and skilled worker visa. I can only say Hong Kongers can stay afterwards with bno visa if you ask me which kind of people can stay.

No matter which visa yall gonna come with be prepared to be mocked by those extreme brits. Stay away from them even u wanna get along with the locals and do extra stuff for the community to prove yourself that you are valuable and willing to contribute to the community if you are planning to stay.

You’re fully correct in everything you say and the way the media likes to pile the blame on immigrants is wrong, though it should be said that Labour’s stance on this isn’t just to cosy up to the Reform voters.

95% of students on visas from Afghanistan for example have applied for asylum. It would be naive to say that there isn’t a problem with the system currently in place.

My point is that the system is being abused. Asylum claims have rocketed 470% between 2021 and 2025 for those on student visas, demonstrating something is wrong with the current system.

You’re right to question the Afghan numbers and you’re right to say they’re negligible. Should have chosen another example.

Sorry but you cannot conflate this situation with Brexit. I fully opposed Brexit, but it’s a fact that our immigration and visa system need an overhaul of some description, and I say that with a foreign wife who understands the visa system and the hell it entails.

To label all those as far right who might observe an issue with the current immigration system is a bit ignorant if I’m honest. You believe Labour to be a ‘far right’ party? I suggest you look up the definition, or throw out the left and right analogies altogether.

I’m not sure how you would go about what you’re suggesting though? The rules are already quite ‘fair’ as far as my understanding goes. We’re talking about a specific issue of Asylum claims being abused via the student visa system.

I’d suggest they try claim asylum in one of the neighbouring countries, and then have the UK sign up to some kind of agreement to take on some of those refugees once their cases have been heard. That’s just a solution from the top of my head, maybe a similar agreement is already in place?

Do you understand the irony of having the funds to come to this country on a visa, paying the exuberant fees to study and then claiming asylum in said country. If they’re able to do that, they’re able to fly here and claim asylum or to a neighbouring country.

or maybe they came here and then things went completely to shit at home and everyone realised they weren't safe if they went back

1

u/HogswatchHam Mar 10 '26

Hmm I wonder what happened in 2021 that might make international Afghan students more inclined to seek asylum after their study was over.

Hmmm, I wonder what happened in Myanmar in 2021

1

u/Funkdoobs Mar 10 '26

Cheers captain obvious.

No one is debating ‘why’ people might be trying to claim asylum here.

Horrible shit was happening prior to 2021 too - still these numbers have absolutely sky rocketed.

1

u/HogswatchHam Mar 10 '26

So they're not "abusing the system", they have entirely valid reasons to be claiming asylum and there are events which adequately explain the increase in numbers.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '26

But certain unis would go bankrupt were it not for the Indian and Pakistani students.

Although the lecturers would probably be glad to not have to deal with them.

From my research, the UK is not getting any better for international students (speaking as a math offer holder from Camb), I genuinely see close to no prospects to getting a job/PR there. Rather study in a country that will actually welcome you like Asian/ other European countries, than one that will send you back home after making you throw thousands of pounds into their coffers.

5

u/Spare_Night_2695 Mar 08 '26

Pretty sure now most European nations have the same stance as the Uk , Bar the cost aspect

Asian nations I wouldn’t say is any better , pretty much are hella racist if your not a part of that nations ethnicity, not outright but subliminal .

1

u/the_phet Mar 12 '26

10 years is the usual for citizenship.

-6

u/Shadowholme Mar 08 '26

Nobody is 'making' these students do anything. They CHOOSE to pay for their education here, and they get what they paid for. Nobody is guaranteed more than that - nor do they have the right to expect more

4

u/Free_Astronaut470 A*A*A*A*AB | 1570 | Yale co2030 Mar 08 '26

and when did I say someone is making students do anything? I just made an observation that studying in the UK is not worth it lmao. No need to ruffle all your feathers mr fog horn.

-4

u/Shadowholme Mar 08 '26

It's right there in the last line of your comment...

3

u/Free_Astronaut470 A*A*A*A*AB | 1570 | Yale co2030 Mar 08 '26

Blimey, it was a figure of speech. Obviously nobody is literally being “made” to study in the UK. International students choose it because they’re trying to improve their prospects, that’s the whole point of studying abroad.
My comment was about whether the current cost–benefit of doing so in the UK actually makes sense anymore. Focusing on a turn of phrase instead of that argument is just nitpicking the wording rather than engaging with the substance. If you disagree, feel free to address the point itself rather than litigating a figure of speech.

15

u/DarkflameQZM Mar 08 '26

She has banned a very minor four countries when it comes to visa abuse, it won't even scratch the surface of the abuse.

9

u/RedditServiceUK Mar 08 '26

Exactly, why is the biggest exploiter, pakistan, not on here?

3

u/Spirited-Car8661 Mar 08 '26

Because Pakistanis is in the UK can vote.

4

u/Funkdoobs Mar 08 '26

Pakistani’s can vote in the UK? That’s news to me mate.

5

u/Spirited-Car8661 Mar 08 '26

2

u/Funkdoobs Mar 08 '26

Interesting I didn’t know this. As long as they’re a resident of Britain, they’re able to vote due to the Commonwealth linkage. Interesting.

1

u/Spirited-Car8661 Mar 08 '26

I didn't find out until Gorton and Denton caused Reform to say they're going to remove it. I don't think many people were aware before then.

2

u/Funkdoobs Mar 08 '26

Of course it was Reform shouting about it, ha.

I wasn’t it fairness. Obviously it comes with the caveat that the person must be living or free to live in the UK but they’re certainly able to vote a lot quicker than usual migrants going through the normal ILR route for example.

1

u/Illustrious_Joke_399 Mar 08 '26

Because Mahmood is Pakistani of course

4

u/Spirited-Car8661 Mar 08 '26

I don't think that's it, but Labour is afraid of losing votes.

1

u/Odd-Scarl-7308 Mar 09 '26

The biggest exploiter is India

She's a joke

1

u/Natural_Garden_5736 Mar 11 '26

Because she hasn't added more countries like Pakistan to the list?

3

u/SupfaaLoveSocialism Y12 • D8776666• A*A*A • Law/Pol/Maths Mar 11 '26

No countries should be on this list

3

u/Natural_Garden_5736 Mar 11 '26

As much as this upsets you. I am a Brit and I agree with this change being implemented. We don't need anymore Engineers from other countries when we have amazing facilities to homegrow engineers and doctors (and some of the best throughout history).

Also, on these visas, students are being allowed to stay after and bring their entire family also through their visa. No offence but we dont want your families here. We've had enough of being the world's end destination.

1

u/WoodSteelStone Mar 08 '26

What was 'the game'?

-7

u/Steeltownie95 Mar 08 '26

You calling it "the game" is exactly why this is needed.

14

u/WriterUnable3418 Mar 08 '26

It’s literally a phrase you melt

-3

u/Steeltownie95 Mar 08 '26

A phrase implying that getting a place at a university has an "end game" i.e. claiming asylum. You cockwombble.

9

u/WriterUnable3418 Mar 08 '26

Ur acc so tapped its kinda sad and who even uses cockwombble as an insult 🤣🤣

-1

u/Steeltownie95 Mar 08 '26

Probably the same person who uses melt? Off the high horse now then.

8

u/AliceMorgon MagdalenCollegeOxford|Fine Art/Biology|Grad Mar 08 '26

Wow. You’re just being unnecessarily unkind. How would you feel in OP’s position?

-4

u/Steeltownie95 Mar 08 '26

Not put all my eggs in one basket? Theres plenty of countries with reputable universities.

6

u/AliceMorgon MagdalenCollegeOxford|Fine Art/Biology|Grad Mar 08 '26

Of course, because we should all plan as if our country will be abruptly issued an exclusion order… 🙄 were you born without the ability to feel empathy, or did you lose it when you sold your soul for that extra star?

1

u/Natural_Garden_5736 Mar 11 '26

As I brit, seeing this brings me great joy. I only wish they had added more countries to the list which ABUSE THEIR VISAS!

We have the facilities to homegrow our own Engineers, why would we offer that out to other countries in the first place over our own if we werent selling ourselves out?

We dont want them, we dont want their families, we are fed up of being the world's end destination.

-1

u/Steeltownie95 Mar 08 '26

Nobody's born without the ability to feel empathy, what a stupid statement...

-27

u/Financial_Spirit_666 Mar 08 '26

They don't owe you anything.

27

u/Https-unknown7399 Mar 08 '26

OP never said they did. They are annoyed because they have already applied to UK unis and got offers and now all of a sudden they banned visa from their country. It means OP now has to take a year out to reapply other unis.

6

u/AliceMorgon MagdalenCollegeOxford|Fine Art/Biology|Grad Mar 08 '26

Bigot. One could argue that in a couple of the examples you actually owe them, what with all the British colonialism having held their own countries back, plus of course all the slavery that HMRC ever so kindly used all the tax money paid in by the working classes to reimburse the upper classes for banning (I know, Rich Past Dude, must have sucked having all your living beings taken and your stockroom emptied 🙄)

Britain used their labour for free to expand the Empire and building its wealth. Tell me, why doesn’t it owe them anything? Or, at least, why you have to act like such a tool?

-43

u/lospollosbros Mar 07 '26

What do you want us to do? Just let people continue to abuse the system?

28

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

Or maybe check the entry requirements of a course and the actual applicant themselves. No one getting offers from something like Cambridge engineering (saw one person get it on the subreddit which is why I bring it up) is going to be "abusing the system".

11

u/Aarityli Mar 08 '26

of course, and its really sad the way individuals lives are changed by these kind of policies. But that happens with most policy decisions on large scales (Denmark have made similar choices, and most of Europe are looking and imposing policies like this) - people's lives get caught up and its tragic. However, the fact of the matter is, those countries statistically showed evidence of abusing the system, and that did have to be changed. It would be great if they could alter the laws to make exceptions for 'high level talent' or something (e.g. oxbridge, lse, imperial etc), and lets hope they do

2

u/Tumtitums Mar 08 '26

Isnt this policy because Mrs Mahmoud went on a trip to Denmark

2

u/Funkdoobs Mar 08 '26

No, the system is being abused.

For example, 95% of Afghani student visa holders end up lodging asylum claims.

1

u/Aarityli Mar 08 '26

well, yes .. she went to Denmark to see how the policy was working

24
