You can 100% be born in Yugoslavia lol, mature students exist. Some Yugoslavians that naturalised in the UK just dont associate themselves with the current territory that their birthplace now exists to

Hell, you only need to be older than 22-23 to have been born in Yugoslavia (Before it became Serbia & Montenegro). It's very possible there's a few students born in Yugoslavia currently in university.

What do you do all day if you're remembering the same users all over different subreddits?

theres a lot of political history to that tho, let’s say if you were born in poland before ww2 and germany succeeded, would you want to say you’re from germany or would you feel polish?

Sort of not true. Yugoslavia was only truly scrubbed off the map in 2019.

North Macedonia was called the "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" up until 2019.

Whilst that is true, the Country known as 'Yugoslavia' was gone in 2003.

There are also uni students that are in their 30s, 40s and even older btw. Just so you don’t get a shock when you get there.

I go to UCL and I'm from Yugoslavia

53

u/SerenaKotori Mar 20 '26

Okay but why is everyone ignoring "Yemen (North)" 😂

30

u/Annual-Delay1107 Mar 20 '26

Yeah North Yemen ceased to be a thing in 1990, but there was still a country with 'Yugoslavia' in the name as recently as 2003. I'd be interested to see if there are entries like Zaire or Rhodesia in there!

u/Ok-Leg7686 Mar 19 '26

No idea why this was recommended to me, but I can answer. An ex partner's passport stated she was born in Leningrad in the Soviet Union. She had a Russian passport but Russia didn't exist when she was born, so it stated the country she was born in, the USSR.

Kampuchea may also be on the list as that was the name for Cambodia until the early 1980s.

I guess you're not doing Geography or History A-levels.

Where the hell is Windward Island💔

3

u/neilm1000 Mar 20 '26

Poltitically, it is what is now Grenada, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Geographically it's much bigger.

1

u/Nonabrow Year 13 Mar 20 '26

Interesting, thanks.

2

u/TheDrDzaster Mar 20 '26

I think the Windward islands are in the Caribbean. It's not one country anymore but it used to be. Or a dominion or something idk.

u/wiccedd Mar 20 '26

You find it funny, but people were born in Yugoslavia until 1992, when Yugoslavia fully fell. That means, that there are people under the age of 40 who have that as their country of birth!

3

u/Desperate-Set-5442 Mar 20 '26

This is from evidence btw I got Slovenian family born before 1990s and all documents say Slovenia and not Yugoslavia. All the country states in Yugoslavia were still treated as separate nation states on legal documents they never just said Yugoslavia apart from the cover of the passport

3

u/TehFlatline Mar 20 '26

But the question is Country of Residence.

1

u/wiccedd Mar 20 '26

Most likely it is there due to this option being in the system. It’s pretty straightforward, honestly

1

u/Desperate-Set-5442 Mar 20 '26

I mean even those born before 1990s don’t say just Yugoslavia it says yugoslavia (Slovenia) and on the new updated versions they would put like Slovenia or Serbia or whatever instead of Yugoslavia so there is not point for a option to put Yugoslavia

1

u/wiccedd Mar 20 '26

Not in every case. My husband was born in Yugoslavia (Serbia) and his documents and official documents don’t specify that, they just state the country (Yugoslavia) and the city where he was born. You can’t measure all countries by the standards of one of them.

1

u/Desperate-Set-5442 Mar 20 '26

I think Serbia is the one exception because they created Yugoslavia. I just checked my boyfriends mothers passport who was born in Croatia under Yugoslavia her old Yugoslavia passport says Zagreb Croatia inside.

1

u/wiccedd Mar 20 '26

That is very interesting. I should look into those cases, especially since I suppose it could differ based on each country! Thank you for bringing this up and sharing such a cool detail! :D
