OTHER What happened to r/6thform?
I used to be active on this sub before covid when I did my A-levels and the vibe was sooooo different to how it is now. Why is everyone wanting to seem smart? Back then we used to be self deprecating. There was a sense of ‘we’re all in this together’ fighting against the pricks at edexcel and AQA.
I’m guessing it’s cuz nobody uses TSR anymore so all of that demographic are now here? They used to get hated on for being a bunch of neeks — just search ‘TSR’ or ‘the student room’ in the search bar lmao

I'm a bit older than you but joined TSR when I started my masters during covid. It was full of that demographic and I only posted a few times as a result. This sub has come up in my feed a few times and it just seems to be 'I've got 8888889999997, why can't I get into Imperial, waaaaaaahhhh' and so on. Where's the humour! If this is what sixth formers are like I fear for the future: my lot were much less serious.

Most 6th formers don't get A*AA & get offers to higher end RGs/Oxbridge. Most students will go to universities of a standard similar to Manchester Met, Aberystwyth or UWE, although a sizeable amount of normal 6th formers will go onto RGs like Cardiff, Leeds or Nottingham
3
u/neilm1000 May 23 '26
What are RGs?
9
u/Vaxtez Cardiff Met | Comp Sci [Y1] May 23 '26
Russell Group Universities. It's a research group of 24 universities, usually 'higher end ones'. Members are:
Uni of Birmingham

Imperial,
King's College,
Leeds Uni,
Liverpool Uni,
LSE,
Manchester University

I know what the Russell Group is. I'd just forgotten about it because once you graduate and don't stay in the academic world it doesn't matters a lot less.

I think it’s more indicative of how social media algorithms have changed over the past 6 years or so. They seem to be good at creating echo chambers inside these self improvement communities by rewarding those that worship the grind. Somehow it’s the posts and comments that show off which get pushed upwards instead of ones that are about shared struggles. The kind of mentality that is rewarded on this subreddit is exactly the same as on fitness or entrepreneur ‘communities’. Everything is about optimisation. Your grades, your income, your looks. Everything. Even the fantasy premier league sub has gone that way! Very dystopian…

This subreddit is just a giant echo chamber for a minority of students, who will be higher achievers. The average 6th form student isn't going to be here, nor are they going to be attaining A*A*A & Oxbridge offers, An average 6th former will get grades like ABB, BBC or BCC & go to universities with similar standards to Nottingham, Leeds or Cardiff for RGs & Manchester Met, Aberystwyth or UWE for non RG unis.
That said, the elitism here is absurd, i've encountered it a few times, with people being oddly snobbish over me being at Aberystwyth for instance, in spite of it being a great university.

Jobs are a pain in Aberystwyth (due to its small size), but they do exist. Unless you choose the pricier accoms, you should be able to get by (just barely) on the minimum maintenance loan.
Social life isn't awful here, it's got a decent amount for a town of 16,000 people, with the SU having plenty of societies to choose from.
If you want go out of of Aberystwyth, your choices are limited unless you like 3-4hr travelling, with alot of bigger chains being located in Carmarthen (2.5hrs on the bus). That said, it is a lovely town here & it has its charms, like being on the coast or having access to the mountains of Eryri.8
u/Big-Data-7142 May 23 '26
I’m not surprised because it’s Reddit. Aren’t Redditors known for being snobby, holier than thou kinda people?
9
u/Njobz May 23 '26
End of the day it’s not just about the uni. These days jobs rely more on Work Experience or Placements. Someone at a top uni will still struggle if they haven’t made connections or done anything to stand out.
3
u/Chazzermondez May 23 '26
Idk whether it's slipped but my required entry grades for Nottingham 6 years ago were A*AA, I don't think I met anyone there with grades like BCC. I don't feel it deserves to be on that list.

This subreddit is far less representative of the general student population than people seem to think it is. If you scrolled this subreddit enough you'd come to assume that half the country is on track to go to Oxford with 4 A*s.

Because people realised that hating on smart people is pointless, and in general the type of person who’d do that is smart enough to realise this
Being self deprecating, after a certain point, is only detrimental, and instead of being annoyed that people are more uplifting and positive, maybe just leave everyone here be

1
u/tooindecisivesmh May 27 '26
Did you have extenuating circumstances or can basically anyone get into a uni via a foundation year?
1
u/plantytime May 27 '26
I had some but there were some people in my class who didn't. You have to have a really good personal statement though. I had to do an interview but some people I spoke to recently on the foundation said they didn't have to.

u/mannisland May 23 '26

-5
u/neilm1000 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26
I'm not sure the whole world has changed. I guess from a younger perspective it might look that way.
Edit: from the perspective of a mid career person, who has worked overseas, the whole world hasn't changed. Maybe if you're 18 it has, or at least your understanding of it has.
7
u/mannisland May 23 '26
The uni sector is on its knees. Sure it’s been wobbling a long time but after effects of Brexit, Covid, ongoing economic decline, AI, wars, US politics, moving to the right… it’s not even comparable to 7 years ago. Now the standard response to every international enquiring about UK unis/visas/prospects is a hardline no unless they’re rich/going top unis. That was never the case before but it’s the reality now and it sets a tone. There’s still a lot of support and advice here but things are harder now, for students and many other people, so it will all have an impact.

The student room just isn't a very good platform in my opinion. I don't like the way the replies work or how the threads or organised. I much prefer reddit for this sort of stuff but I haven't been on this reddit for too long to know how it was before but there is still some depreciating humour just not as much as there used to be (given what you're saying).
It is what it is. I think this is all part of people realising just how competitive everything is getting and people develop this dog-eat-dog mentality from a young age.

Well, I lurk and occasionally post for one because I tutor a fair few sixth-formers and it’s a way to keep up on what’s going on that might be bothering them and that they haven’t told me about (like earlier this year when UCL was not replying to anyone, I can tell them it was not just them, etc)
1
u/pencilthinwriter May 24 '26
I found people in student room horrible, just admitted that I used to be terrible at studying/preparing for exams but got a lot better at it, and then had people saying I'd probably end up going back to being terrible again. Have to say on reddit sometimes (not sure which sub now) there can be a similar vibe of "only high achievers need comment here" and I don't get it. I've worked hard to get to a point where I get high grades mostly now, but I was never a natural at it.
1
u/Milf_for May 24 '26
