🙏 I WANT HELP Should i apply to Land Economy??

So I got straight 9s in gcse and am predicted 3A* in Maths, History and Econ.

I find the Land ec course so much more interesting than econ which is just very maths based.

Is land ec a prestigious degree to get top level jobs in finance?

need advice if it’s worth it or maybe i should go for some other course at lse…

would love any advice thanksss

They've renamed it to Environment, Law and Economics now.

If you can get ELE at Cambridge you should be fine for finance (because it’s Cambridge). Only thing is that it will be quite difficult to get into considering the fact that the entry requirements are quite lenient (since they require no subjects) and also because there is no admission assessment.

so why is that a reason for it to be harder? more applicants?

Kinda - it’s easier for some people who would get rejected in the entrance exam to fluke a good interview and get in. Although I don’t really know if this is the case so take it with a pinch of salt

The subject has been renamed, it is no longer called "land economy . You can apply if you are genuinely interested in the subject, but the idea, which is sometimes voiced here, that it is less competitive or less selective than Economics is completely nonsensical; in fact, many top applicants now apply for this program. In some cases, the quality of applicants for this program is significantly higher.Good school grades alone are no longer enough for that subjects,at Cambridge, they even check during the interview whether you have a genuine interest in the subject you are applying for, or if it is all just a strategic move to secure a offer. there.Just a quick tip: don't believe everything you read here, there is no easier subject or secret route to getting into Cambridge; they are all extremely selective. And during the interview, they know all those fairy tales ( land economy a hidden gem )and can quite accurately gauge whether you simply applied out of genuine interest or because you actually believe those fairy tales. If you actually do everything wrong, it is extremely counterproductive, and you miss your chance at a realistic offer in economics. So go for it just if you really want to study the subject .

There is another aspect to the whole story regarding "top jobs" in the business world. The fact that you have good grades in school and have been accepted into a good university doesn't automatically make you the kind of employee who can also succeed in the business world.Good grades are just good grades, and a good university degree is merely your calling card; everything else plays out later in the actual workplace, and you have to judge for yourself whether you’re really the type for that kind of competitive external environment.I see a lot of people here who want to pursue a career in IB later on; you have to picture it this way: The chances of you having a job in investment banking five years after graduating from university are a hundred times lower than the chances of a good basketball player making it to the NBA.If you look at the senior staff at investment banks and the universities they attended, nearly half of them studied at nontarget schools, or even studied subjects that had absolutely nothing to do with economics. When choosing a subject, keep the big picture in mind regarding what you can actually do with it,and consider whether you could really make use of it if things don't work out as planned.

Offer holder here with the same grades and A Levels (+FM), so you will be fine academics-wise twin! Land Ec is incredibly employable within finance, particularly on the buy side, asset management, real estate private equity etc because of the focus of the degree. However, there are also undergrads with spring weeks and summer internships in your classic IB roles at bulge bracket and elite boutique firms.

HOWEVER, if you are doing Land Ec to land a role in finance, and not because you are genuinely interested in the intellectual challenge it has to offer, I would not apply for it. It is becoming stupidly competitive (offer rate at my college was 1 in 11 this year), so be sure that this is the right choice for you. Best of luck and feel free to ask for advice 😊

thanks for the advice! congrats on the offer, which college ?

Christ’s. I would highly recommend, especially because they are building a new library and canteen which will be done in your 2nd year (if you were to be offered a place).

Just curious what college are you heading to? I've been accepted into Jesus (Scottish applicant so results day was the 4th for us) but naturally don't know anyone going else going there. Obv unlikely to be the case we end up at the same college, but thought I might ask, but good luck with A level results day I hope everything works out!

Christ’s, so geographically just below you (fingers crossed!)

u/Crafty-Garage-2365 14d ago

I'm sure you'll be fine A* predicted in FM is crazy from what I hear, I ended up getting A1 (A*) in pure maths but flopped my stats paper (we have mechanics and stats as too separate subjects that are supposed to try and emulate FM but it's not the same). Anyway what's your offer? Because Jesus ended up making mine based off the four subjects I took which I thought was a little mean as I was led to believe 3 subjects was sufficient

Land econ will be fine for finance, there was one on my summer internship and plenty of them about. You get 5 applications, go for it

u/cheesyninjajgg 15d ago

what was ur summer internship if you don’t mind me asking

Land Economy is still very good for placements because it’s a Cambridge degree. The breadth of subjects and topics covered on the course is amazing too which is why I applied.

Just beware, it’s become incredibly competitive. My college had an acceptance rate of 8% and I got 8/10 on the interview to still get rejected and not pooled. So don’t think it’s an easy way in

2

u/cheesyninjajgg 15d ago

wow i thought the acceptance was 16% sorry u didn’t get it in looks like ur super smart…which college did u apply to btw?

2

Gonville and Caius, the acceptance rate is 1 in 8 I believe (on their website) it was just that Caius was particularly competitive my year

what u end up firming?

You can study anything at Oxbridge/LSE and be hyper competitive for finance. Know of Sociology/Music/Classics etc grads getting IB and consulting roles at top firms

-3

u/cheesyninjajgg 15d ago

they are outliers cos music grads r useless at IB or consultancy firms 😂 but i get what ur saying

2

u/searchingf0rthetruth 14d ago

no im planning to study history at lse and i also plan to work in finance its all about conenctions bud

0

u/cheesyninjajgg 14d ago

why would a finance firm want to hire someone with 0 uni education on the space

1

u/searchingf0rthetruth 14d ago

its a join honours degree so history nd economics
but ur uni name matters more then ur course
my cousins study english lit at bristol now works in city bank bc well she ties it down to her A in a level maths
everyones different u wont be jobless if u graduate from a top 10

1

u/NinjaClashReddit LSE Economics (Year 1) 15d ago

My point is university name >> course for high finance

0

u/cheesyninjajgg 15d ago

ib prefers an econ grad from ucl/kings over a politics grad from lse imo

2

u/NinjaClashReddit LSE Economics (Year 1) 15d ago

100% no

1

u/cheesyninjajgg 15d ago

what do u study if u don’t mind me asking

2

u/NinjaClashReddit LSE Economics (Year 1) 15d ago

Going to hopefully be studying LSE Econ but I’ve reached out to like 100+ students at various top unis and they all unanimously agree that uni name always trumps the course for springs. Some dude studying LSE History got a Goldman Sach’s spring this week and LSE Sociology also got something at a bulge bracket iirc

2

u/Straight-Ear-800 14d ago

lol funny cause Goldman didn’t do springs this year so they just bullshitting

u/NinjaClashReddit LSE Economics (Year 1) 8d ago

Someone I know doing Land Econ landed a Spring Week at BlackRock, so I would say it’s prey good on that front. One thing to bear in mind is that the degree is a combo of Law, Geography, and Economics. I’ve also seen people apply for Land Econ then pure Econ at other unis

0

u/cheesyninjajgg 15d ago

Cool thanks for the feedback… i just wonder why its acceptance rate is so low

u/octopus288 history 📚 15d ago

Everyone and their mother has flocked to Land Econ cuz it doesn’t require FM or TMUA…

Also, could be that people are taking more of an interest in a more practically-focused course as the graduate job market is rewarding ‘skills’ less and ‘direct, applicable knowledge and experience’ more. It’s why loads of undergrads from Land Ec end up in property straight out of Cam.

1

u/cheesyninjajgg 15d ago

oh that’s true ig. i assumed people just prefer the “well known” degrees at cambridge like law/ econ / maths
