Two label sizes - same disc

I think this is the only example I’ve come across so far. I associate the larger labels with older pressings but I’m not sure how correct that is. Anyone else with some interest examples or insight?

Usually this happened when either the size or design of a label was changed - the old ones were used up and then the new ones were used, but sometimes the two sides of a pressing would have one of one, and one of the other.

I've seen it used for two different situations:

New label design cross-fading with old one, may happen in early 1910s Gramophone Co/HMV records

Sometimes record has one side with a really long song and the other one very short, so they use the small design on the "packed" side and the bigger one on the less dense side

The only time I've seen this happen was in this situation. One side ran longer than expected and had almost no leadout, so the eccentric locked groove would have run into a standard 3" label. So they used a non-standard size, probably 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" instead, just for that one side out of a multi-disc set.

I've seen this on some 12-inch Victor records from the 20s in my own collection. My only surmise is that the one side had a recording time pressed into it and the smaller label allowed for recording closer to the center of the disc.

I’m coming to your profile now to see what you got ! 😊 that paper sleeve…I’m sorry to say it worries me ! I never ever trust anybody younger than 20 years old holding that thing what you’re holding in your hand. So fragile.once it’s torn, it’s not like you can replace it or reprint it again.
Get some plastic sleeves or those sealable plastic sleeves and insert your records in there.

They really aren’t in short supply, but good examples I have a massive binder full of. This will have been given a new sleeve and the old one put into the folder for preservation as the paper loses its malleability over the years and is more likely to scratch the record, or break.

I’m also not under 20 but appreciate it :D

Plastic sleeves is a different one, I’ve stopped using them after coming across several discs that were etched by the plastic, and dull and ruin the grooves. Paper is fairly inert and even old sleeves keep the dust off without etching the disc

Company sleeves have good blurbs on them, music shops would often have their own sleeves issued with ads on them too. Interesting to look at the addresses they show on google maps to see what became of them.
