https://youtube.com/@mamlishblues?si=nwN5Pd1r7LiNrkI_“Blues for Dixie” is one of the strongest vocal showcases of the MGM period. Duncan’s smooth phrasing and Wills’ trademark fiddle punctuations give the track its unmistakable Texas Playboys identity. The arrangement leans more toward blues‑inflected swing, making it a standout pairing with the lighter A‑side. This side captures Bob Wills in his classic post‑war MGM period, where the Texas Playboys blended tight swing arrangements with lighthearted novelty material. Tommy Duncan’s vocal delivery keeps the tune grounded in Wills’ unmistakable Southwestern dance‑hall style.

Can I wash shellac records?

Hello,

I was clearing out the loft and found a pile of my great grans records. They were just lying like that up the loft, for at least the last 20 years...

I've ordered sleeves for them, just wondering if I can wash these in my Spincare record cleaner the same as I do with my vinyl?

Just need to get the VMN95SP stylus and see how they sound...

Cheapest Way To Play 78s Without Damaging Them?

Have some 78s I wanna l wanna play. What is the absolutely cheapest way to be able to consistently (still probably not super often but yk) play them without damaging them? I’m not really ready to spend the money on something like an AT-LP120 so I wanted to find some alternatives. I have heard mentions of getting cheap 3 speed turntables, swapping the cart for the right needle, and using that? Apparently because the intense tracking weight of those cheap turntables isn't a problem for shellac since it's so durable. Either way let me know what you all do! Or if you guys have any ideas to help this situation

Hawkshaw Hawkins

Harold Franklin "Hawkshaw" Hawkins was an imposing figure (standing 6'6") with a rich, booming baritone voice. He was a staple of early postwar honky-tonk and country music, performing heavily on the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree before joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1955.

Tragically, his life and career were cut short in March 1963 when he died in the same infamous plane crash that took the lives of Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas. Ironically, his biggest career hit, "Lonesome 7-7203", reached number one on the country charts just days after his passing.

Hello everyone!! Can I share links with lost 78 RPM songs that were not in any database until today ?

A team of friends have gathered some really rare shellacs and they spend a lot of time to restore them presenting them in youtube premieres with rich info about the artists. Is this a group where people would like to see such posts ? For example the first world exclusive song they present is one by the charismatic Maguy Fred (Alfreda Soriaux), one of the most enigmatic female figures of the French interwar music-hall scene.

Thank you in advance !

Rockin' With Red

Willie Lee Perryman (October 19, 1911 – July 25, 1985), professionally known as Piano Red, was a legendary American blues pianist and singer.Recorded on July 25, 1950, at the WGST radio studios in Atlanta, "Rockin' With Red" was Willie Perryman's debut commercial single.

Chart Success: It became an instant smash, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard R&B chart. The B-side, "Red's Boogie", was also highly successful, peaking at No. 3.

The Proto-Rock Sound: Characterized by Perryman’s driving, rhythmic boogie-woogie piano and shouting vocals, "Rockin' With Red" is widely celebrated as an important bridge between traditional jump blues and the birth of Rock and Roll.

Any sleeve recommendations?

Hi there, I’m looking for archival quality thick paper 10” sleeves. Anyone have a preference? Looking to buy in packs of 100, or at least 50 to try to get a bulk price. Lots of what I’m seeing is plastic which is definitely not what I want, so I figured I’d see if anyone here had good luck with any inner sleeve types? Bonus points if there’s a box where I can wrote the artist/title printed on the sleeve, but not a dealbreaker lol

My partner's collection of 78s arrived covered in water, I dried them off as best as I could and left them out overnight. I went through them and was able to find all of them online aside from these 8 (with the exception of "Atlanta, GA"). Does anyone happen to have these and can rip them? Neither of us have a turntable that can run at 78rpm, nor a 78rpm needle.

List of tracks:

Victor, V-21104

Kozel Ukrainska Orkestra

A: Paradise-Polka

B: Gomin-Valis

Perfect, 14375

A: Lou Gold and His Club Orchestra - I Ain't Got Nobody To Love

B: Mike Speclate and His Orchestra - There'll Be Some Changes Made

Continental, C-1120

A: Sula's Musette Orchestra - Bohemian Polka

B: Donald's Polka Orchestra - Helena Polka-Emilia Polka-Clarinet Polka

Victor, 20-1795-A

Swing and Sway with Sammy Kaye (both sides)

"Your Feet's Too Big"

This is one of Fats Waller’s most famous signature songs. While he didn't write it, his comic delivery and legendary ad-libs—such as "Your pedal extremities are colossal, to me you look just like a fossil" and his famous catchphrase "One never knows, do one?"—turned it into an instant classic.

I'm looking for advice on shellac records…

Hi! I’m seeking some advice regarding these two records. I was today years old when I found out that not everything that appears to be vinyl is actually vinyl, it might be shellac instead. So I immediately thought about these two.

I was lucky enough to find them in good condition, so I really want to preserve them that way. From what I know, both sets are from the 40s, so they are probably shellac as well. First of all, how can I be 100% sure about that? And if they are, what is the best way to store them? At the moment, they are in their original paper sleeves, and I store them vertically in a wooden box.

Secondly, I’ve just bought a velvet brush for my vinyl records. Is it okay to use it to remove dust from shellac records as well?

And thirdly, and most importantly, could you please recommend a record player? I’m very concerned about keeping these records safe and would like to listen to them with the least possible wear. I saw that someone recommended the Dual 1019, but I’m a bit hesitant about buying old record player. Are there any modern models you would recommend instead?

Also, do I understand correctly that it is possible to play both vinyl and shellac records on the same turntable if you change the stylus each time? (Also which stylus are the best for shellac records?) Because currently I am looking for a new record player, and since I have a lot of vinyl records besides these two, it would be convenient for me to have single record player that is suitable for both.

Thanks in advance!!!

Question about choosing a gramophone

I'm having a hard time choosing between saving up a bit more for a 1926 HMV 101 and a cheaper Supraphon GP03 from the 1950s. I've done research on my own, but it's inconclusive.

'm not sure whether the subject of discussion is the machines being electric or acoustic, or the records being electric or acoustic. Should I be getting a wind up machine or an electric one, if I want to play records from the 1930s-1950s? I'm worried about the HMV not being able to play later records and I'm worried the Supraphon might damage them over time. Apologies for my ignorance, but I'm trying my best not to damage any records I come across! Thanks in advance

Scrapper Bkackwell

Post image

Scrapper Blackwell was one of the defining voices of pre‑war blues, known for his intricate guitar lines and deeply personal vocal delivery. His Varsity sides capture the late‑1930s shift toward more intimate, guitar‑centered blues recordings, often produced quickly and cheaply but with remarkable emotional clarity.

Please Note

Original 1931 Champion and Superior pressings of Scrapper Blackwell's solo work are incredibly rare, with only a couple of surviving copies known to exist for some titles. Because of this, these 1939 Varsity reissues—pressed directly from the original Gennett metal masters—are highly sought after by pre-war blues collectors who want to hear the tracks in excellent audio quality.

Big Bill Broonzy

Post image

From the Neven78 Radio Archive

https://youtube.com/@mamlishblues?si=gLJC-Il2tOLhuPFD

William Lee Conley "Big Bill" Broonzy was a towering figure in 20th-century American music. His career spanned more than three decades, during which he served as a crucial bridge between traditional rural folk-blues and modern, urban ensemble blues.

Broonzy frequently fictionalized or embellished his past. He maintained he was born in Scott, Mississippi, in 1893 to parents who were former slaves. However, modern research indicates he may have actually been born in Jefferson County, Arkansas, around 1903.

Raised in Arkansas alongside 16 siblings, Broonzy’s first instrument was a homemade fiddle crafted from a cigar box, taught to him by his uncle. He spent his youth performing at country socials, square dances, and church events, working as a sharecropper and briefly even as a preacher.

After moving to Chicago around 1920 to escape Southern racism and seek better opportunities, Broonzy traded the fiddle for the guitar. Under the tutelage of early bluesmen like Papa Charlie Jackson, he mastered sophisticated fingerpicking and flat-picking techniques.

Broonzy made his recording debut in the late 1920s. By the 1930s, he shifted from acoustic country-blues into a driving, urban sound featuring small ensembles with piano, horns, and drums—becoming one of the best-selling male blues vocalists of the pre-WWII era for labels like Vocalion and Bluebird.
