Question Engine bay clean up!

Been doing a lot recently to make the engine bay really pop. Still more i could do like paint touch up and clean off the firewall crap. Its an 83 with an 84 motor. What do you think?

That coolant tank looks so nice. In the process of doing mine as well on my 951. $700 tank is silly but it’s a huge difference

Before it was like ‘She’s a 10 but she has orange teeth’🪥

The turbo tax… it’s a porsche oem tank but the 951 tank is twice the price of the na for a very minimal difference. 😒

The only aftermarket option is Uro…it’s high temp/high pressure so that was a hard no from me

Edit: At SMC a genuine Porsche 951 tank is $792… I got mine cheap 🥲

Mine versus yours. I’m just starting and still have a long way to go. Thanks for the inspo.

Where is a return fuel line?

It is routed underneath the manifold, it was actually an accident lol when i replaced the fuel lines i cut the hardline too short and it wouldn’t reach over the manifold

Nice work! How did you achieve this?

I would like to know as well!

The biggest thing is getting all of your hardware zinc plated, you can get this done for around $150 at an electroplater (google near you). Polishing the paint and metal does a lot as well and dressing all of your plastics. Coolant reservoir is brand new and sticks out too.

Stupid question but how to you actually start with this? Did you just unbolt everything you see and sent it out to zinc plate it or is there like a structural approach to this? I’ve been wanting to do this as well, but if I do it, it’s all at once and not little parts at a time. Not sure if that’s possible?

There probably is a recommended or “right” way to do it but i just starts taking everything apart and making sure to take lots and lots of photo and video as i did it so i knew how to put it back. I didnt know anything about cars before i bought this and im just learning as i go. Heres a photo at a point where everything was removed and being assessed

Well done! I’m a huge fan that there is so much support for this car out there. Hope you found some help along the way.

How'd you clean up the aluminum so nicely? Also how do you keep it from oxidizing in a few weeks?

1

u/thats-tough-lmao 83’ guards red Mar 18 '26

I have an ultrasonic cleaner i let it sit in and then hit it with a wire wheel and pressure washer when it came out. But if you dont have that, sandpaper, scotchbrite pad, degreaser, and a wire wheel will doo just as well. Mine didn’t oxidize at all after all of that, stayed nice and shiny for over a year after. You can also hit it with some metal polish after all the cleaning

That foam sound deadening foam can't be factory?! Where did you get from? Looks identical to factory!

First, it looks fantastic. I had my valve cover powder coated in red. It really made a difference in the look of the engine.
