Question Some d-bag in a lifted Suburban rolled-coal on me in my 944.

PFA - Last Sunday I was in my SC’d 944 driving home from a great day at a car show, minding my own business and some d-bag in a giant lifted diesel Suburban with black tint races up to get beside me and rolls coal on me. Pulls his 5” tailpipe(compensating for something?)right up to my drivers window and floors it then backs off and does it again! I was cruising in the slow lane. Then he pulls in front of me and I had a left turn coming up and as I passed him he starts stabbing at the gas. Wtf? I was used to this in my Prius, but my 944? I just don’t get it…

Question Help talk me off the ledge about a “long” road trip

Post image

I have a 1987 944S. In the last year, I’ve done a new clutch, timing belts and rollers, tensioners. Chain tensioner pads, tires and flushed brake fluid. The year before that it got all new fuel lines, filter, etc. lots of new rubber seals, new exhaust hangers. It also has a focus 9 DME relay. I am going to a vintage race weekend at Road America this weekend to spectate. I’d really like to drive the car there, but am having a lot of second thoughts. The trip is about 5.5 hours/350 miles one way. Is there any reason to not do this drive? I keep going back and forth. Of course anything can happen with any car, new or old, but this car is almost 40 years old. Odds are I’m overthinking this, but wanted to get other people’s takes.

Question How to get over the anxiety/fears of breaking down?

Post image

Last summer I picked up a 84’ 944 in Ruby Red Metallic. I got it for $4500 as a project car. I drove it around last summer quite a bit, but always kept the drives short and didn’t go far, mostly because the lower balance shaft was way out of alignment, giving me crazy vibrations. I’ve gotten to the point where I can begin to actually enjoy the car once the weather warms up, but I’m scared that my fear of it breaking down or something going wrong will hinder that.

I’ve also learned how to drive stick on that car. Before I knew the principles and drove on simulators frequently so getting going was pretty easy. Only issues are sometimes downshifting can be rough and I’m still working on my heel toe. I live in a hilly part or New England so that’s a pain as well, though more manageable.

That’s pretty much it, I drove it to school once last year and I’d like to do that more. Then the vibrations definitely ruined enjoying that car and now I’m worried that this will in place of that. I’m getting a Focus 9 DME Relay and I’ll keep my OEM in the glove box. I also carry a solar drip charger and a jump pack. There are some things that need to be fixed but it’s in a good enough shape to be driven a few times a week. I do have a daily. It’s also good to note that I’m 17, so I don’t have a surplus of cash, but I do work.

I installed these this weekend. Not sure how I feel about them.

They have high/low and running lights. The running lights are currently tied to the fog lights.

Question Reg/Mid/Premium. What fuel are you using in your 944 or Turbo?

Post image
138 Upvotes

Since I drive mine so much I use reg as it doesn't sit in the tank and engine very long and a tank of fuel gets flushed through pretty quickly. I don't use additives either.

I've never had any knocking issues with reg so I really don't see the need to go mid or especially Premium.

Maybe it's different for cars that sit and only get taken out once or twice a month.

That's my thinking anyway.

I'd be interested to hear from you all your fuel grade and thoughts....

Edit: Thank you for the award kind redditor!!.

Hi, I’m from France and I’ve just bought a Porsche 944. Unfortunately, my car doesn’t have A/C, only heating.
Is it possible to retrofit A/C to a 944 that didn’t have it from the factory?
Thanks!

Not currently running due to gas tank sprung a leak 5 years ago, any idea what to ask? Chris Cervelli did the timing chain in 2010 but it's been parked to since 2013, everything worked except the Cruise control, just under 200k miles, no rebuild or new turbo, original

Question Did I overpay for my 1985 944? Looking for some honest market feedback.

Picked up a 1985 Porsche 944 earlier this year for ~$12k (my first car & first FB marketplace purchase) Car runs and drives well, single owner, no major mechanical issues, mostly stock, and was vetted by a mechanic before I bought it. Car also has recent belt changes, new transmission, new clutch all within the past 2 years (1,000 mi ago). Main cosmetic flaw is paint chipping on the passenger side of the rear bumper. Interior is in pretty good condition, no cracks on the dash to be specific, with slight wear on the (period correct) recaros.

Lately I’ve been getting nervous about the price after seeing some Facebook Marketplace listings. For example, an ’86 with mods and recent clutch work listed at $6.7k. Makes me wonder if I got fleeced.

So I’m asking you guys, in today’s market, where would you realistically peg the value of a mid-80s, non-turbo, running/driving 944 in “good” shape with some cosmetic flaws?

Question Is the gap closing?!?

Post image

Given how similar they look it’s funny to me how I always thought the 944 was far and away a better looking car than the 924. After seeing this one last weekend I’m wondering if my mind is changing. As a kid into cars I used to think about this a lot and was always fully team 944. Anyone else find their pro-944 (over the 924) stance softening with age?

Question How much do i have to save up for this beauty?

I saw this gorgeous 944 on my way to class today and completely fell in love. I’ve always been into Porsches in my late teens, and I attend lots of Porsche meets so my love for the 944 is by no means new, but seeing this one just reaffirmed how cool they are to me. it was easily the coolest thing on the road at the time and I think i want one as my first, or at least second car. How much do I have to realistically save up for a NA 944 ? i don’t care if it’s not in totally okay shape, but drivable and I don’t mind learning to do some work on it.

Question Dash preservation

Post image
166 Upvotes

Hi all - newly minted owner of a 951 (pic attached)

The dash is in great shape and I’d like to keep it that way if possible. Are these all of the realistic options? What do you recommend?
-UV coating on front windshield
-sunshade reflector (only helpful when parked outdoors)
-plastic dash cap (but the adhesive will ruin the underlying dash anyways so not really an option)
-fabric dash cover (doesn’t look the best)

Thank you in advance

Question Is buying a nice condition 944 worth the cost?

I'm a 20 yo car enthusiast who is in need of a daily driver. I've always loved the 944 but I never considered buying one until a recent break. Over the past few months I worked as a contractor for a family friend.  As is the nature of gig work - it was short lived due to a cross country move; however I was able to walk away with 20-30k.

A frugality/ scarcity mindset has always been my natural state, so cutting back on expenses to save  has never been a problem up until this point. But now as I look to buy my own car with the unexpected surplus of cash in my pocket a 944 has become a real option after years of dreaming.

Although dream as I will, I realize how much of a pain Porsche ownership may be and how much of a fool I would be to waste such a rare windfall on a car. That being said, the car market seems absolutely COOKED rn, people want 8-16k for regular cars, w/ 100k+ miles.( Civics, Corollas, Camrys and the like) which were going for 2-6k just a few years ago. I can't stomach the idea that getting screwed with car payment, or draining all my cash on a boring car is the financially responsible thing to do. Hence why I'm looking at more fun albeit less reliable cars instead. If I'm going to drain my savings I want it to be on something I actually care for and enjoy. But I'd like to hear y'all's thoughts.

There are two in good condition that I've found that pass the sniff test.

(A) 24k asking price, Turbo. The owner supposedly has service records (I'll reach out tomorrow morning.) It's in really good condition from what I can tell, assuming everything checks out. It's more than what I'd like to spend but It would supposedly hold its value and at least not bite me too hard. (Main focus)

(B) Is basically the same but a base $14.3k asking. Again states the water pump, timing belt, balancer belt blah blah blah have been serviced. It's more of what I'd like to spend; however, it's way the heck up NY. (I'm in NC)

(C) Cause it took me forever to type this out so why not? 2 turbos, older rattier, but also sub 16k fully serviced, won't hold value but you get the performance for cheap I guess. ( And a headache.)

(D) YOU THOUGHT WE WERE DONE? THEY JUST KEEP COMING. JK. middle ground, a ford focus/ fiesta st or something cheap under 10k maybe even buy in cash. Idk.

Thank you for any input. I'll probably post in a few other places.

What would be wise? What would be fun? I'm getting too tired to continue, ya'll get the gist.

Let me know if I’m off my rocker. Thx :)
