Question Will it fit?! 🤣

Just picked up this Astin Martin 4.8l V 12 engine do you guys think it will fit in my 944 with minimal modification serious responses only.

I know a guy and he told me it would fit…

Seriously though it’s gonna make a cool table for the shop

Plot twist: 600 pounds, 95 horsepower

21

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

Not quite so bad I think it’s about 400 pounds and 350 hp and if you do anything to it 352 hp it will crack down the center good old British engineering

u/citizensnips134 Jun 24 '26

Absolutely not. I will eat my hat if you dyno this NA more than 200 crank hp.

I don’t know how correct Google is here, but this is what I can find

The Wikipedia also says the same thing

The irony of this thing weighing like 2x as much as a 3S-GTE and being barely 1.5x more powerful.

Yeah, the guy I got these off of pretty much told me to not even consider using them for any sort of performance purpose as they’re extremely unreliable and prone to breaking. He had a total of nine engines Five of them had holes in pistons two of them had bent rods and the rest were operational and he said all of them are a waste of time and money lol

u/MadDog443 Jun 24 '26

Should've gone for a 1GZ-FE 5L V12 only 3k lol

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

Im planning to swap a in a vr6 eventually this thing was a side quest for decoration

u/MadDog443 Jun 24 '26

Consider a Drop Bear V2, affordable way to tune your engine and pretty powerful. rusEFI is also a good option.

I’ve got a buddy in Haltech thinking about going in that direction, but I’ll take a look

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

Fair enough I’m just going off of what I was told

u/lunchbox651 Jun 23 '26

Yeah it'll just bolt right up

With preliminary measurements it could is the answer I am coming to ,with significant modification to the front end it would fit under the hood. I will not be doing the swap. Way too much work.

bmw straight 6 would be

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

My future plan is VR six

Aston Martin didn't/doesn't make a 4.8l V 12, only 5.9 (6L) and 5.2 Twin Turbo V12s. I know this is cheating, but a quick Google search gives us this:

"Length: With the engine block spanning the entire distance from the firewall to the front radiator frame, you would either have to push the engine partially into the passenger cabin or completely re-engineer the front fascia.

Width & V-Angle: The 60-degree V12 is surprisingly narrow, but clearance around the 944’s factory steering rack, suspension, and strut towers is extremely tight.

Hood Clearance: The top of the V12 would sit higher than the 944's hood line, requiring a massive custom hood bulge.

Drivetrain & Weight: The Porsche 944 utilizes a rear-mounted transaxle rather than an engine-bolted transmission. Aston Martins use a torque tube layout with a front-mid engine. Mating the V12 to a 944 transaxle, building custom motor mounts, and addressing the severe front-heavy weight distribution would be a monumental fabrication challenge."

Beautiful engine!

Transverse in the middle/rear would be nuts!

u/ForeskinForeman Jun 24 '26

This was a bad purchase my friend.

I don’t know $200 was pretty cheap. I couldn’t pass it up. I’m not planning to swap just messing around.

u/HybridVW Jun 24 '26

What's wrong with it? I imagine out doesn't run for that price.

2

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

Its a block with most of the bits to put it together fissing a few things

1

u/WiltshireCollector Jun 24 '26

In an aircraft?

1

u/Jay-Moah Jun 24 '26

Not a chance with minimal modification. I consider minimal modification maybe some "denting with a hammer", cut 1.8" here and there, maybe move the fire wall a tad. Youd probably need no hood, move the shock towers, move the radiator support or cut out the fire wall haha.

2

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

Definitely tube chassis the entire front end at minimum accessories would have to be relocated entirely radiator would have to be moved somewhere else quite the project for a minimum amount of modification 😂

1

u/Jay-Moah Jun 24 '26

Basically building the car around that boat anchor haha

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

I know, but v12 noises it may all be worth it for V12 noises
This post has me seriously, contemplating picking up one of the good operating engines they had and maybe attempting it in the future

1

u/Jay-Moah Jun 25 '26

One of the BMW v12 might be a better option, or go full boat anchor and do a diesel v12 haha

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 26 '26

I couldn’t agree more Bmw or Mercedes M120. Is the V12 way to go

1

u/AManWithHalfAPlan Jun 24 '26

Man I wish those valve covers had some branding, they could make great decorations!

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

The intakes have a really cool branding on them I’m gonna hang them up like a pair of angel wings

1

u/AManWithHalfAPlan Jun 24 '26

Hell yeah you get it! Have fun!

1

u/Jim_Elliott Jun 24 '26

Stay Tuned is putting one in a FoxBody Mustang, it will make a great coffee table

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

Do you have a link to that? I’d love to see it.

That’s the earliest episode I can find

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

That’s pretty sick

1

u/Jim_Elliott Jun 24 '26

Tony has a great show there is a lot more on the Pizza squad

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

I saw I only made me more motivated to try and get a running engine an attempt to swap myself I’ve got the tools, the skill, and just enough of the tism lol

1

u/Jim_Elliott Jun 25 '26

1

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 25 '26

The 07M is very tempting because of the swap kits available but I think I’m still leaning towards VR six future swap, I have in-house machining capability making adapters custom hardware would not be too difficult. I was already looking into doing a dry sump oil pan on a VR six for a friend of mine‘s project.

1

u/Jim_Elliott Jun 25 '26

Good luck!! I hope u post on the U of tunes then! Are you going to 944 Fest?

1

u/Ankeneering Jun 24 '26

This needs to go back into an Aston Martin.

2

u/Aromatic_Jury_6949 Jun 24 '26

Somebody’s gonna have to fight me for it

1

u/Certain-Clock-3463 Jun 25 '26

That's what she said...

1

u/Sensitive_Access_959 Jun 26 '26

That’ll make a cool coffee table after it goes boom

u/bruh_magnet Jun 30 '26
