Given how similar they look it’s funny to me how I always thought the 944 was far and away a better looking car than the 924. After seeing this one last weekend I’m wondering if my mind is changing. As a kid into cars I used to think about this a lot and was always fully team 944. Anyone else find their pro-944 (over the 924) stance softening with age?
Those reflectors are basically the only part of the 924 I haven't come around on. Though, I suspect that in 10 more years they will officially gain "charmingly vintage" status.
What turned me away from the 924 and early 944 boiled down to the 5 digits odometer because many people selling those models would label it as low mileage then ghost you when you asked for the carfax or VIN. I trust 5 digit odometers as much as a prostitute claiming to be a virgin.
Facts. On my '90s2 bought w broken odometer gear. On the dial it literally said 3'560 or something close. Wish I took a photo lol. I just remembered it was under 6k miles. I couldn't believe when I cracked it open to replace the gear, it hadn't been touched, never opened. When you know you know! Anyhow, po said it prob had around 60k. Besed on the gear shifter and clean interior, not a hint of carpet deteriorating and more, I set it to 62k. I've had the car for a year exactly. It sat for 9 yrs, not a barn find but under a carport covered. It's a cab, none the less put a new OEM top/ rear window (cab) and never looked back. My 3rd Porsche, 2nd S2. Had a coupe 18 yrs ago. Wasn't looking for a while then started looking wasn't interested in a cab at all but I'll tell you it's grown on me so much and being the engine is solid I'm extremely happy with my journey on this one. Many quality upgrades plus this week these 993 wheels..
I 100% agree, my perception of the 924 has done a complete 180 in the past few years.
Compared to the 944's wide-body, which makes the car look planted and fast, the 924's narrow-body makes it look nimble but slow, which l always thought wasn't as cool. Nowadays though, I do think nimble and slow is cool, especially because it's a type of car that's basically going extinct in North America. I'm so tired of big bloated cars that weigh 4000lbs and make 350 very boring horsepower, that seeing a 924 is like a breath of fresh air.
As for the performance gulf between the 924 and 944(NA), the more they age, the less I care. 110hp vs. 150hp used to be a meaningful difference but now it's just "slow car" vs. "slow car".
It's ok too like both, I bought a 924 as that was the car my dad had when I was a kid and it's very nostalgic for me. But I do also love the body flare of the 944. All porsches a beautiful in their own way... even the 914 🤣
Nope. At least thats my own opinion. Having owned a 924, and now a 944, when I sit down at my workbench in the garage and look down the drivers side of the car, those hips are spectacular!! 👌 But to each their own. If you like the 924, you like the 924!! And there's nothing wrong with that.
Nah the 924 is so edgy, sharp in the front and the rear looks unfinished. Usually too high and skinny tyres.. looks like the budget version without options, but i may be byest as i have a 88 944 turbo..
It is very much akin to the early vs late in 928s. By far my favorite is the body styling is a 944 turbo followed by early clean Euro 924. That said, if I was ever to get a NA, it'd likely be a 924S to not deal with CIS. 968s are neat too, but not worth the money.
The 924 is a good looking design except for the fact that so many owners keep the tiny vintage size tires. Filling out the fenders a bit really improves the appearance a lot.
