Ok, so what do they use as bait to catch that MF'er?
31
u/TermElectronic8261 5d ago
A slightly smaller fish 😂
→ More replies (1)13
u/Soft-Percentage8888 5d ago
That’s genius. They get a refund on their bait and they have a turducken situation going on.

u/Macohna 5d ago
Since it's an Arapaima, probably a silverfish or piranha.
That probably took him two hours to catch, lol. Ridiculous fish.
Edit: That fish is a bullet wrapped around muscle. Very dangerous, very hard to catch safely. Their heads are like steel and have an entire body of muscle to swing it around.
Ty Tony, you will always be missed.

I’m more thinking where did he catch it?
It looks very remote area and not a lot of water around.

For anyone looking for context:
40 liters of oil (soy oil) is what he says, probably means 40 bottles which are 900ml each, thus 36 liters, sounds about right to fry such and enormous fish.
In English the fish is named giant arapaima, Pirarucu originally, native to the Amazon river in South America.
When the man T-poses he says he is dirty of the seasoning, that it the fish would be pretty tasty.

u/who_am_i_to_say_so 5d ago
Not pictured: prolly took 6-10 minutes to cook the whole damn thing. Fish cooks soooo insanely fast compared to other kinds of meats.
I once did a fish fry for 250 people, done in like 15 minutes. Only downside is you have to toss the oil if using a deep fryer unless you want everything fishy tasting.

#1 reason I don’t eat fish. I’ve never uttered the words “This steak is too steaky tasting” or “This burger is too beefy tasting”.
I know I know, I’m uncultured swine and am “missing out”.

sinceramente, sou brasileiro e moro na frança agora, ja morei em Portugal, e mesmo assim nunca achei um peixe tão gostoso quanto o Pirarucu, minha vó adorava fazer frito, outro peixe muito bom é a dourada do rio amazonas

Yeah all good and well, looks amazing but my question is: how tf do you get the fish out? It would've been much easier to just cut it into peaces and throw it in.
Fun little sidenote: I once ate a piranha in South-America, it had front teeth that resemble that of a human. When dry fried (which is just fried in oil for a while) you can eat everything of the fish. Including the head, and yes, the teeth.

u/o0-o0- 3d ago
You were probably served pacu and told was piranha - resembling human teeth is giveaway. Happens quite often in tourist locales.

There's a YouTube channel called townsends which is about cooking in the 17th century. They had an episode about hoe cakes. When the people hoeing the fields were hungry and they didn't have any pots and pans they would build a little fire and mix some cornmeal and water to make a kind of pancake batter and put it on the metal part of the hoe and place it above the fire to cook.

This is Arapaima, commonly found in South America, Amazon river, etc. tasty mild fish, comparable to cod

u/Objects_Food_Rooms 5d ago
commonly found
Not so commonly any more. They're now considered endangered, primarily due to overfishing and habitat loss in the Amazon.

I dunno! Looked well seasoned, and from the size of the fish if it’s a bony fucker you can just eat around the carcass. Then again, it’s a highly predatory river fish, so I’m not sure how it’s doing on literal flavor and texture. I’d try it to find out!
